Remedy devolped, 3DRealms Produced Max Payne, what does that mean exactly?
Ok, so Remedy made the game, so what did 3drealms do to contribute to the game? I'm not sure I understand what "produced" means. Usually develop and produce mean the same thing.

Well, 3DRealms gave their own ideas and opinions to help Remedy with developing the game.
If I am correct, Remedy came to 3DRealms with the idea and concept of Max Payne and then both companies worked together to create the game.

Basically, Remedy made (most of) the entire game. 3D Realms and Godgames published it, I believe (isn't that what producing means?)

Maybe they(3DR) financed the development process. That's what 'produced' seems to mean in the movie industry.

That means 3Drealms either funded the development or they produced the final product.

I remember I asked this question once ages ago and Joe didn't know the answer at first images/icons/tongue.gif
I can't remember what the eventual answer was though.

I really hope that 3DR is working now fulltime on DNF images/icons/wink.gif
But I don't believe...or should I? images/icons/grin.gif

I believe "produced" in this instance means produced in the same way movies are produced, ie, 3D Realms took care of the logistics, financial and organisational aspects of things.

(bumping this old thread because I was just about to ask the same question before doing a search)

A Developer is a Band the writes the music. A Producers prints the CD's an advertises the concerts... But it could be a dream I had.

3D Realms probably helped fund the project and helped them with some development aspects along the way. Seen the pictures of Sam Lake at 3DR HQ showing off comic ideas? That was probably like showing a movie to a publishing company with a famous director in the room with him. They looked at whether it was goood money being spent to continue it, and when the director saw something he didn't like, he would give good friendly advice to the developers.
That's how I see it. It could be the complete opposite. images/icons/tongue.gif

Remedy developed the game. We came up with the original game concept, and did the programming, graphics and sound (the music was sub-contracted to Kimmo Kajasto and Kärtsy Hatakka).
3D Realms funded the project; they paid the Remedy staff's salaries and oversaw the project, giving suggestions and advice, and took care of the beta testing. Scott and George from 3DR participated strongly when we were creating Max Payne as a character and they pushed us forward with the game.
Take 2 published the game. They took care of the marketing, manufacturing and distribution, partook in the quality assurance and beta testing, and also arranged the voice actors (the actors were chosen by Remedy from a list Take 2 provided). Take 2 also took care of running the console port projects with Rockstar Canada (PS2) and Neo (X-Box).

The character and the game concept (as stated above) were originally developed at Remedy, but Scott and George actively partook in the creation process when the concept was taking shape by giving numerous suggestions. The final choices were made by Remedy.
The project started when Death Rally had been finished, and Remedy was looking for a new game concept to start working on.
As for the exact IP ownership details, I shall have to consult someone who knows the facts. Petri?

So who owns the IP and trademarks? The last spin I heard was that Max Payne was a 3DR idea farmed out because they couldn't do it in house.

Max is something that we've done together with 3DR and we share ownership on the game and the characters.

Do you think 3DR would fund my band? Well as soon as I get one.... And learn to play an instrument.... images/icons/grin.gif You know I'm joking. images/icons/tongue.gif
It's real cool to learn about how Remedy and 3DR worked together to bring us this Great Game. Max Payne game me back my faith in the gaming industry. Until Max Payne the games I was buying were either not my style or just big disappointments. Thanx!
