Hi,
My first post here, altought I've been following the progress of the 'Duke Revamp' for sometime now. Anyway, I work in the 'real world' as a recording engineer / musician and I've been thinking about how I could get involved with the new Duke thing.
The music tracks that are played in the original are just MIDI files, I was thinking that I could arrange a full remake and recording of each song since JonoF plans to add MP3 support. Its alot of work, since there is more than 40 songs in the orignal Duke, but I think I could do it. Let me know your opinions and ideas. If theres anyting else you guys need in regards to sound, let me know if theres anything I can do!
Oh also, I've already started on the E1L1 track 'Stalker' and I will post a sample for you tomorrow.

I think Jonof is actually planning on OGG support as opposed to MP3. It'd probably be better to record it as a wave file then use dBpowerAMP Music Converter to convert it to Ogg-Vorbis.

I can covert my final song files into any format you require my dear http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and I can assure you they will be of the highest quality.
However, MP3's are a good choice if users wish to play their own song collections in the game, just like you can with Unreal Tournament.

You should be aware that Mark McWane (http://markmcwane.com/music-dukenukem.html) has already done this for all of the Duke music, and is thinking of redoing them again with better quality samples. However, i'd certainly love to hear another take on the Duke music http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

mp3 isn't free in the same way ogg is.
OGG is better qulity and higher compresion.
mostly any player plays OGG, but you are right that most ppl hase there songs in mp3 so they would have to convert them in taht case.

Actually I've sort of already started on that. I haven't been increasing the old sounds' quality, but I have been finding high quality replacements. My new shotgun sounds are very, very nice. I also have some of Born to be Wild playing in E3L1.
I'd post it all here except that its way too big for this site, plus I've got nowhere else to put it.

11-17-2004, 06:36 AM
You hope you are not just ripping those sounds of some other games..
royalty free sfx collections cost damn, so finding replacements might be hard. It would be cool if someone took time to actually create new sounds, but that would take a lot work and talent.
And I must say I don't like those arrangements by Mark McWane. I think they still sound much like the midi and there is way too much echo. Also cymbals are very high in grabbag...
I like more of the Grabbag "remix" by Bonch (don't know where to get it anymore), and Gotham and Waterworld remixes by Bart Klepka (http://bart.overclocked.org/)

I can e-mail them to you or put them on my site for download. Afaik there's no copyright on it.

I haven't been able to check out that other guys tracks just yet, but if you say they sound much like midi files then just wait couple of days and you will be able to compare them to my versions. I've used alot of real Orchestral sounds plus real drum kits etc so it sounds top notch! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I spent like 8 hours in the Studio on monday organising all this, I promise to get that snippet online soon so you can give me some feedback.
As for the actual sounds in Duke, I have access to huge sample library's which we use in the Studio, and they have to be royalty free anyway otherwise the artists we record wouldn't be able to use them in their commercial songs. I own the copyright on alot of the sounds myself and dont mind using them in Duke since I'm being part of this project now. I'll see what I can cook up.
We might have a problem with Dukes voice though, I doubt I will find anyone with the same voice who is prepared to re-record everything in the Studio. I might play around with the orignal sound files to see if I can improve their quality.

Dukes voice is definately going to be a problem. And I don't think you can just upsample the original samples (or whetever they are called).
I can't wait to hear your first demo.

Shit... Thats harsh about the MP3 thing http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Regarding the sounds, I've just been tinkering with 'Your face your ass whats the difference' and there's not much that can be done. There's a slight improvemnt but because the sounds were recorded at 8bit resolution, they just sound 'grainy' if I'm not careful.

I'm totally a fan of the original grabbag audio track found on the atomic CD. How is that one done? All synthesized but not midi?
Pete B
11-17-2004, 04:24 PM
The one on the Atomic CD is not MIDI, it was completely re-recorded (and sounds quite good). If its not possible to use this in our project then I can easily arrange a recording to be make of Grabbag, and it wouldn't be too hard to get it sounding like the one on the Atomic CD since its just Guitars and Synthesizers.

Also, am I the only one who knows where to actually get the Grabbag theme song not in MIDI format from 3DR? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Just convert it to Ogg-Vorbis with the program I mentioned above.

Ok I'll fix that problem with Stalker, but I must say it didn't sound to bad when I did it. I have noticed that 128kbps MP3 has a habbit of doing strange things to my songs. The finished version will be perfect I promise you.

I like the electronic sound....considering most were in midi format they need to have some creative license if remixing/remaking them and I think that electronic type sound gives the song life compared to a more generic MIDI style tone...keep up the good work and give us some full versions!

Will you provide the whole remixes once they're complete?
I like them, nice dance tracks, but I don't think they fit into the D3D-Setting. They're way too synthetic and too dominant. IMHO a soundtrack should be in the background and provide ambience and shouldn't be so dominant. Yeah I agree they are a bit too 'in-yer-face' at the moment, but the thing is those 2 tracks I've been doing are probably the only 2 in Duke3D which are designed to be electronic. I want to do more work with 'Streets' cos at the moment it IS too dancy.
Part of the problem is working out how the original artist intended the song to be. I can't wait to do 'Pizzed' cos that one will be wicked, and 'Dethtoll' will be pretty much just classical/orchestral stuff. Also, I'll get the full versions uploaded for Monday.

as for switching them to OGG, might I suggest Audacity? It's awesome for tuning songs and such, and can change the file formats without any hassle. you will need the Lame MP3 encoder to import and export MP3 files, but that can be found on the Audacity site as well.

In this case I choose to believe TerminX http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Here is a little mod I did for myself, which replace 2BWILD.VOC (music in karaoke bar) with 13 sec loop from "Born to be wild" song.
http://members.lycos.co.uk/piterplus/download/BTBW.zip
While there is no mp3 or ogg support in the Jonof port, I had to convert it to .voc format and pack in .grp.
In the future it will be pretty easy to use it in any other format compatible with port.
Another note - actually, I tried to contact with song's rights holder (Mr. John Key) to get his permition to use this excerpt in our port. As it may be expected, I did not receive an answer.

US Copyright Office on Fair Use (http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html)
Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered “fair,” such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
However, directly after that passage comes this one:
Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:
the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
the nature of the copyrighted work;
amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
When it all comes down to it, it's an extremely small portion of a song on the Internet, used for a completely uncommmercial nature, with absolutely zero potential to affect the value of the copyrighted work. I still believe this falls under fair use, but as the page says, fair use is not easily defined.

I think this is a subject we should ask 3DR about. I know for certain in UK & Europe, you may not use a copyrighted peice of recording no matter how small the sample is. It does not matter if our project holds no commecial value, the point is we would still be redistributing recorded work electronically.
Since this is a non commercial project we could probably contact the record company/publisher/author and ask for written permission to use the sample.
Its all a hazy subject, but I insist the best thing to do is just recreate the track.

Why would anyone ask 3DR about property 3DR doesn't own? If "rap artists" can get away with sampling songs and selling tracks made with them, and if remixes are legal, I still don't see a problem with using a 10 second clip.

I'd have to agree w/ Tx. My friend played a song for me the other day.. Little John repeats the first rift of Crazy Train by Ozzie over and over and over. You can tell he just ripped it cause it even has Ozzies scream in it...

maby the they got premision from the lable....
i think that it is legal to play some one else song as long as you don't sell it, like using part of it on a concert or somthing like that, or maby the labes just dosent care or we dont heare about it...

Like TX said, rappers do it all the time, its in their CDs.. That Little John song I referred to is on one of his CDs. So they are selling it

Permission from the label/Owner of the song is the way it's done. Unfortunately, the common denominator is money. With rappers sampling stuff, permission is usually paid for with up front fees, or a percentage of whatever the person using the sample makes with it. Technically, you're supposed to have permission for public performance as well.
Of course, once the copyright expires, anything goes. However, i believe verything discussed in this thread has a current copyright.

Getting back to the subject...
Pete B, can you possibly release one FULL song (preferrably Stalker) before you finish the whole pack... just to tide me over? The sample MP3 makes me want to here the song in its entirety.

What speaks against releasing all of them?

Me. I dont want to release them until the whole thing is done. Then, I will put them together as a pack to download etc.
Just for myself really, I need to be happy with the whole project before I can release it.

post STALKER!!! That's my fav. I want to see if your work (since we haven't had an update in a while) will kill the Sega Saturn version which I currently view as the best. I have a feeling it will. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
