the trailer is cool. pinky http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif
that first person thing could also be interesting, but I think it will be too much where the player thinks: "COME ON LOOK BEHIND YOU? DON'T YOU HEAR IT?"
what song is playing in the background?

The talking guns look a bit weak, in the trailer they said things like "Someone is coming" and "time to reload". http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

There are a number of songs in that trailer, but the most prominent one is "Switchback" by CellDweller.

the first person part is only a small part of the movie, it's cool for variation.
it will feel like you are playing doom 3 http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif
I don't see how you can say it's bad. it's an original idea, and I hoped there would be some movies in first person one day.

Also there have been a few shows entirely in first person. And episode of the Outer Limits (90's) had an episode done in it.

It CAN be done. The problem is that the view looks stupid in motion and people act so blank and insincere in front of the camera instead of pretending to talk with a person. You know, kind of like in FMV games?

I just saw the new trailer. I was pretty excited about it at first when I saw the teaser trailer.
After this I dunno. Looks kinda lame. I had a bad feeling when I heard there would be a shootout in first person. I just don't think it would ever be a good idea.
I will say that the first person was done much better than I was thinking, but it still looked lame. The only part that looked cool in first person was when they had the chainsaw, and I think it was just because of the pinky demon.
I'll still see it, but I dunno. I think it has a much better chance at sucking now... again.

You could be closer to the truth there than you might think. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif This is from one of the old Dark Horizen scoops that also said the movie took place on a planet called Olduvai instead of Mars though, so hopefully this detail/scene has changed or been cut out of the film as well, leaving just a good ol' normal Pinky Demon.
One character is a technician called "Pinky" who has a cybernetic wheelchair thanks to a bad teleporting accident. Pinky later mutates into something remotely resembling a creature from Doom 3.
Who knows, maybe the wheelchair-like look is just a remnant from earlier script ideas and this whole Pinky technician thing was another thing scrapped along with ideas like the "planet Olduvai". I hope do, anyway. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

I've always believed that the initial reports were intentionally mirroring what the characters in the movie'll think.
Internet Post: Doom movie without hell! No demons!
Guys: Oh shit, this sucks.
Movie: Actually, there's demons.
Guys: Sweem!
----
Movie Stating Dude: hey, there's something wrong on the base. Some experiments got loose.
Soldiers: Nifty.
Movie: Actually, they be demons.

References to Hell edited out of Doom movie
No monsters.. a weird scenario
By Wil Harris: Saturday 04 December 2004, 11:39
A REPORT from the set of the Doom movie has unveiled some fantastic re-writes and re-characterisations.
The movie project, based on the ubiquitous video game, is currently being filmed in Prague. Eastern Europe has become a hot-bed of low budget horror movie making in recent years, due to the activities of the SciFi channel, who have their Saturday night monster-flicks filmed there.
The report says that screenwriter, Dave Callaham, was keen to keep the atmosphere of the game intact whilst making some 'necessary' story changes. The changes? Well, Doom won't be set on Mars. The monsters have nothing to do with Hell. Space marines are SWAT teams. The monsters will, apparently, be people mututated by a secret virus.
Gosh, how original. Have they seen Resident Evil?
The report is the latest in a series that don't exactly lend the movie credit. The director recently hired to take over the project, Andrzej Bartkowiak, has such high-quality films as Species and Dante's Peak in his back-catalogue.
The lack of any kind of 'Hell' connection is something of a kicker. Doom 2 was subtitled 'Hell on Earth', and the key plot point of Doom 3 is that the monsters in-game are Hellspawn, hence the multiple pentograms and such vile creations as dead-baby-cherub-wasp combinations. A 'necessary' change, or a neat way to avoid right-wing criticism? We wonder.
The Doom movie is due out some time in 2005.

so...
- It will be on Earth, not Mars.
- No marines.
- No Hell.
Why not call it "Mario plays Policeman"?
And don't forget! - The ROCK is in it too http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
I'm not watching this filth - they might as well change the name, because that's all that's needed to be changed eh? "Mario Plays Police" sounds fitting...but they should probably utilize the Rock's status instead - "Smell what Doom's cookin'!" That's right, Dwayne Johnson's name will be doom! You do realize that that release was from almost two years ago? Right? Look at the date on it.
It's been confirmed that it will take place on Mars, the whole hell thing is still up in the air. But all the rumors about it being on Earth with a SWAT team have been silenced.
Watch the trailer.

Or a transmission from a dieing soldier: "lag lag lag lag!"
And if hit by an Imp's fireball: "Wtf, teh graphX hurtZ"
I also want to see some UT 200# crossed with Doom3 features in the Doom movie, like:
- Someone who accidently bumbed into a team member suddenly gets teamkilled by him...
- EVERYone standing in ONE place to camp...
- Karma physics...
- Nice DX8/9 effects
- Loading times between several doors, or airlocks
- Soldiers shooting at lamps to see if the light reacts realisticly enough
- A high number of Ping...
- And of course, Super Turbo Turkey Puncher http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hhg.gif

Haha... Great idea... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
There should also appear a text several times troughout the game, that says "Autosaved"
And the marines HAVE to reload thier weapons before switching to a new one...
Marine: "OMG, A hellknight, i better finish reloading my chaingun fast, so i can pull my BFG into battle" http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif
And IF the monsters teleport various places in the movie, an Imp could be teleported right behind a low healthed soldier and kill him, if this happens, a text saying "Player 'Imp' spawn-killed player 'marine 4'..." Following with an other text saying "Marine 4 has started a vote to kick 'Imp' from server"

It also explains the whole "people mutating thing" better.
It does make sense, and it isn't just about an expermient. There is heel involved, the demons just don't walk through a portal... they mutate the humans and come to Mars through people. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Okay, just got home work so... I'm not tired anymore. (all I do at work is read the newspaper http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif )
So here's the statement about hell in the Doom movie.
"The game's admittedly thin plot has since been fleshed out with the addition of more chaaracters, and with a deeper explanation for the sudden appearance of demons on Mars.
The movie provides a wormhole. And hell-spawn. But according to the film's continuity (based loosely on all three games), a gene exists that indicates a person's predisposition toward good or evil. Once infected by whatever is on the other side of that wormhole, humans mutate into demonic representatives of the darkness in their souls."
There, that actualy sounds interesting.
And as far as the movie being rated R, they said there will most likely be an uncut DVD. Because they are going for an R rating, they are removing some bits of gore. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gif

If Bruce jumped at the part (after reading the script) it has to be good.
Name a bad film Bruce did? And the Kid doesn't count, that was pretty good in it's own right.

I just read the gamespy article... has it already been confirmed WHY they lied (by revealing wrong facts about the game: earth, no demons, ...)? even gamespy was surprised when they walked on stage, because they saw an UAC logo lifting, right from the game, after thinking it would be a movie on earth without demons involved and being told no to expect much.

You can't say that the people making the movie lied. This is the internet, you shouldn't believe everything people post, say or read.
All the stuff posted about it taking place on Earth, with no demons... that was all rumored. It's only been in the last few months that they've started releasing official facts about the movie.

I was just playing Doom 3 last night and noticed something. In Delta Labs 2B, when you come across all the demons in glass chambers.
A monitor starts playing and talking about the teleportation experiments. But it also talks about genomic mapping.
So... it isn't completely made up for the movie, the concept is in the game. Just used in different ways.

Why is everyone so down on The Rock? He's not a bad actor at all, and judging from the trailers, is a great fit for this role. Don't get me wrong, I really like Bruce Willis, but I usually see him in a more "real world" role (with the exception of "The Fifth Element). Did anyone see "The Rundown"? Not a bad flick at all imho. I personally think Dwane Johnson will do great in this role.

This movie looks horribly lame and typical.
The movie adaptation of the board game "Clue!" is brilliant. If you haven't seen it, you're probably thinking "How the hell did they make a movie about Clue?" Easy. They took the familiar elements of the board game and turned it into a story . The acting/writing/other-film-elements make it a good film.
I think with something like Doom, where the story is somewhat abstract, the film-makers have a lot of room to move around in, and its just goddamn dissapointing they aren't doing that.
I had an idea for how the Doom movie would be years ago. It would follow one character. He would narrate whats happening, and the film would be about isolation and inevitable Death (Doom http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). But this is Hollywood we're talkin' about, and my idea would make a good 45 minute indie film. In that regard, there may be no hope for video game movies.

And about not telling a movie's whole story in a traier...they may not tell every nitty gritty bit, but its pretty apparent what happens. Its also apparent that this movie has no depth. I predict a Resident Evil 2 brain-fry of a movie.

Why ew? What were you expecting from a movie based on a game where you just pull the trigger on anything that moves?
I expect another sub par blow the shite out of everything with cheesy one liners and a bland yet entertaining story. You know, like every other action movie out there?
Honestly...what were you expecting? I'm curious....
Something else than a lame WF Wrestler to get the main role. Haha too funny.

He isn't the main role if you have been paying attention. Karl Urban (aka Eomer from the Lord of the Rings) is the main character, The Rock is just a guy named Sarge. We might even get to see the bastard get mauled by an imp....and that alone is worth the price of admission! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Besides have you ever seen Walking Tall or The rundown? The man isn't that bad as an action star. True, he's no arnold but he's definately not as bad as everyone makes him out to be.

Depends on the movie. You see for a action/sci-fi movie like this one... a trailer should show off kick ass special FX and lots of action type stuff.
Suspense and thriller movies would benefit from trailers showing off story elements.
I'm gonna go see if Friday with Bon. I'm expecting a cheesy b-movie action film. With lots off violence, profanity and gore.

Don't be ridiculous.
I'm a science fiction fan from way back. I go to Mars, I expect to see it. Watching "Doom" is like visiting Vegas and never leaving your hotel room.
"Doom" is like some kid came over and is using your computer and won't let you play.
The monsters are still there on Mars. They are big mothers and must have awesome daily caloric requirements. How they survive, how they breathe earth atmosphere in the station and what, as carnivores, they eat and drink -- I think we can all agree these are questions deserving serious scientific study.
Need he say more?
Phait

Yes. So he tried to open up the logic of the movie and it's various plot devices. Big deal. There's more to it than that, more to his rating, there has to be. He could've at least summed it up why.

Simply, people are being to protective over this IP because it's Doom.
No matter who did the movie, and how it came out it wouldn't be good enough... because of the lagecy that Doom left in the gaming world.
I can't wait to see this, as much as I love the Doom series. I love the fact that it's been taken to another format.
Sure they've changed things. They had to. Doom'3 story is pretty weak... even in Doom 3. For about 90% of the game your just running around shooting demons. The rest of the time your watching cutscenes or walking around.
They would have to change things and expend the story to make it work in a movei setting.
I say that us gamers need to lighten up a bit. Go see it for the fun of it, but not for a serious, compelling story driven thriller.
A bunch of friends invited me to go and see it this weekend but I said Hell No. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

I just saw the movie at the midnight showing last night. It was fun and was a cool mindless action movie. It wasn't the horror movie they were talking about.
The characters are pretty weak. The development is almost nonexistant. John Grimm (aka Reaper) seems to have a history with Olduvai and Mars with his sister, Sam Grimm. A history they only hint at. They never really explain what happened or show what happened. The rest of the characters you don't care for at all and you can immediately tell they are all going to die. Rock did a great job as Sarge though. It was fun seeing him barking orders at the other soldiers.
The camera work was pretty decent. They did some cool shots making it feel like the monsters were watching the marines. The lighting was poor in trying to make it scary. The first-person view wasn't all that great either. The directing just isn't all that great.
I read a lot of other reviews saying that the movie was really tense and there were a lot of 'jump' moments. Personally, I didn't find the movie scary at all and I didn't see any jump points in the movie. To be honest, I don't think one person on these boards will jump once. The tense moments in the movie are unfortunately ruined by some lame generic rock music. Instead of using amient sounds like in the game to give you a more intense feel, they play some super random lame rock music. That diminishes the tense moments. Even in the first person sequence. The moment is ruined by lighting and music. They could've made a really good horror movie by using more sound effects from the monsters to build up anticipation and that would've made the execution a lot more fun. You're never on the edge of your seat for any of the action scenes. Just go to the movie expecing an action movie, and you'll come out fine. The action is really good, and there is a lot of blood and guts. Thats what doom is though, really.
!!!WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
<font color="#1F1F22">The ending is really lame, but still fun to watch. It isn't doom-like at all. It is a big fist-fight in an arena that feels like it was specifically made for Grimm and Sarge to fight in. It was just not Doom-like at all. It was really out of place.
Another thing I wasn't too fond of was that that the monsters infected others to change them. I had no problem with that. The problem was that they were choosing the victims to infect. That was lame.
The first person sequence, although not tense at all, is still a lot of fun to watch if you are a gamer. There are a few parts where it makes you think, "heh, that's happened to me before". One part that really sticks out is when he turns and shoots a reflection of himself.
The BFG is magnificent! It's really cool to see being used. It is referred to as "Big F***in Gun" by the Rock.
The monsters were quite a bit faster than they should've been.
The Pinky demon was awesome, and is definitely the best part of the first-person sequence. because of the chainsaw.
They do use a lot of the story elements that were in doom3. The research facility was studying ancient artifacts on mars, and discussed the colonization that was there before. Something Doom3 talked quite a bit about.
Some people felt like it was random for Sarge to go crazy. To me it felt more like he was a puppet of the government and UAC. He was just doing what he was told and only cared about getting the job done properly and getting out alive. He didn't really turn into a badguy to me. </font>

Can't say I expected much from this movie, and I guess it "delivered" adequately. Ultimately, this is a movie with horrible acting, decent special effects, decent sound effects, god awful soundtrack, and ridiculously expensive sets. I was severely disappointed with the cheap hard rock music; they really should've gotten old Reznor to whip up a few tracks. I did notice the end credits music was a remix of some Nine Inch Nails stuff (I think) but it would have been quite cool to have the entire soundtrack made up of his masterful ambiance.
I was supremely disappointed with their seemingly arbitrary changes to the doom plot. What the heck was the point? Why take out the portal to hell? I'm tired of the same "terrible virus accident" BS. I'm sorry, but it's just not doom if you remove hell. Some footage of the archeological dig (and perhaps a fight or two down there) would have been nice.

The story was a little different from the original Doom story, heck, it was ALOT different, and that bothered me. There were a few other things that bothered me but I won't go into details at this time.
I felt the end of the movie left an opening for a sequel. Did anyone else get that feeling?
As for the explanation of what happened to their parents etc... there was one if you pay attention when he was looking out that window. It wasn't detailed though.
I don't know, I liked the movie, it was a great movie, but didn't stick close enough to the original Doom story in either Doom 1 or 3 for my liking.
Oh, the Duke character didn't look quite right either if you ask me. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

They are having a story written just for the movie, it will be another independent episode in Duke Nukem saga. Scott said back in 1999 that they wanted to make more than one mivie and make it more like James Bond.

Toward the end of the movie, there is a lengthy point-of-view shot looking forward over the barrel of a large weapon as it tracks the corridors of the research station. Monsters jump out from behind things and are blasted to death, in a sequence that abandons all attempts at character and dialogue and uncannily resembles a video game.

I heard there was a three picture deal. I hope they do a better job with the sequels.

I noticed immeadiatly. I was like, "Your joking!". I thougt that was pretty kick ass.
So, if you didn't notice I saw it. I loved it a lot. I didn't want it to end. I teared up a little when the logo appeared, so many memmories flooded back.

Overall I thought it was pretty cool, but I have a few complaints.
<table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler">I would've rather had them retain the original backstory of demons and teleporters (but the one they have in place isn't unacceptable), and the beginning felt like there was some footage snipped before it. The thing is, my assumption, the whole beginning of the movie was snipped down to gel with all the fans of the game.
The movie as we all know(look at earlier pages in this thread) was supposed to be some other planet(and if I even remember correctly) earth even at one point. When that information hit the fans, they all complained, uproar of disputes about how they were ripping Doom to shreds and wern't respecting the game etc..
So I think what happened, using the 80:20 rule(being to get rid of 80% of filmed footage and keeping that important 20%) they did what they could to get the soldiers indoors and not mention where they were so everyone would assume it was on mars all that while. Roger Ebert even complained of lack of Mars footage, probably because their original idea had no footage of such mars surfaces.

There was footage of it being used on a monster.
Plus:
<table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler">No outside shot of the complex blowing up.
No jump kick off the wall in the FPS scene and no baron.
Plus, the fact that Sarge didn't transform all the way. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif</td></tr></table>
I just came back from seeing. Minus a few things, it was a pretty enjoyable movie.

Not the greatest movie I've ever seen, but it was certainly a Doom movie. Better than I expected.

I thought the movie's beggining was way too slow going.
I loved the Game references like "Dr. Carmack" and "Let God sort 'em out." ... I kinda thought naming a character "Duke" was a reference even though the actor didn't resemble him.
What I really didn't like (I'm sure this has been mentoned already but I'll put in "spoiler vision" just because...
<table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler"> No Demons or Hell? [Shouldn't this be called Resident Evil?] (Big let down) While it did have Imps and Zombies everywhere - why wasn't the Pinky Demon explained? How the hell did Pinky get that way (He's the only one that evolved into that monster - why and how?)?
What exactly happened to the Grimm parents? Did I miss that somehow? Did they fall to their death - or did something get them... they just kind of left it unknown.
No Demons meant none of the great monsters like Hell Knights and those walking heads etc. - All I got to see were Imps, zombies and pinky demon (along with that Bigger deformity [don't own doom 3 so don't know the name of it])... The lack of an over-abundance of monsters attacking at once was also a huge let down. At the end when they take the Rock, that was it?? Bogus!</td></tr></table>
Overall - what do I expect from a game-movie?
To be honest I feel like it was really under-developed and untrue to core of Doom - for reasons stated.

There was a Hell Knight in it, the movie was very dark (even more so than the game) so it was hard to tell.
<table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler"> When Destroyer falls into the holding cell. The mosnter/demon he fights in there was the Hell Knight.
That's why it was bigger than the imps and harder to kill.
Also, in the FPS sequence there was a Hell Knight. Grimm blew it's arm off, then shoot it's head (or something). </td></tr></table>
I enjoyed it, the ending was a bit of a let down. And it did lack the intensity of the game. But... take a 25 hour game and turn it into a two hour movie. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I found it enjoyable.
The FPS sequence was nice, and pretty well done.
It was better than a lot of games turned moveis are. It's better than the Far Cry movie will turn out.

I had no idea they changed the image of a Hell Knight from the horned creature with electronic legs to a bigger looking Imp-like creature - sorry!
But even so there were a lot of demons missing I wanted to see!

Yeah, I would've loved to have seen the maggot, wraith or cherub.
A Cacodemon would've kicked ass as well.
I also felt that there weren't enough zombies in the movie. Sure towards the end they were everywhere, but at the start of the film there weren't any at all.
But all together it was a pretty good movie. Basically what I expected. A cheap b-movie action/sci-fo movie. A good summer film.

I enjoyed it alot. Perhaps that's because my expectations were so low but eitherway - it holds the dubious honour of being the best videogame movie and unlike Resident Evil, capitalised on the strengths of the game. E.g. gory action and lots of it!
One thing I did like was the lack of crap CGI. Too many films use it nowadays and if it's not done right then its pointless. The prosethitc monsters worked much better.
<table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler">
The replacement of Hellspawn with Mutantspawn definately took away from the menacing atmosphere of the game. </td></tr></table>
And according to the Doom Movie website - that is the Hell Knight. Wouldn't have known it meself...

My girlfriend and I seen this tonight and we both enjoyed the movie... but I don't think I'd want to see it again. I liked playing through doom 1 and 2 but never bothered playing 3. Having said that I've also seen enough screen shots of doom 3 to recognize all the monsters throughout the movie. Overall I felt it was a pretty good video game to movie conversion. Like many others though I didn't like how they changed the story from demons to hell to genetic monsters.

That was my biggest let down of the movie. The concept sounded so cool, but by the end of the sequence I was totally tired of it. It was way too drawn out, and the entire time it really seemed to have no point (except for bragging rights, I suppose).

Even with terribly low expectations for this movie it completely amazed me how crappy it was. There were just so many stupid parts in it and I could not for the life of me take "The Rock" seriously (not sure if I was supposed to? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif) Towards the ending I half expected him to say that "Can you smell what the rock is cooking" line of his. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif
The FPS part of it was funny for awhile but dragged on way longer than it should have. Although I did enjoy the part where <table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler"> the guy got scared and shot his reflection, because I always accidentally did that http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif </td></tr></table>
IMO this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, it's not even a good action flick....and to top off the awfulness the preview weren't even all that good. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yep.
As for taking the Rock seriously..... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif I don't watch WWE so watching his movies isn't an issue. Have you guys seen Walking Tall or the Rundown? Do it.....you'll forget you are even watching The Rock.

"The Rock" is a decent actor. He makes the crappy material he gets better (but I still hate WWE.)
As for the movie, it had a lot more gore and f-bombs than I expected. It was definetly worth the matinee price I paid to see it (albeit wasn't that great of a movie) and my friends got a good kick out of the adaptation as well.
I reluctantly reccomend it.

Roger Ebert likened it to watching somebody else play a video game in that you don't really feel like you're getting the whole experience.

He and Roeper were saying it's like watching someone else play a videogame. You want to play, and you can't.
