No monsters.. a weird scenario
By Wil Harris: Saturday 04 December 2004, 11:39
A REPORT from the set of the Doom movie has unveiled some fantastic re-writes and re-characterisations.
The movie project, based on the ubiquitous video game, is currently being filmed in Prague. Eastern Europe has become a hot-bed of low budget horror movie making in recent years, due to the activities of the SciFi channel, who have their Saturday night monster-flicks filmed there.
The report says that screenwriter, Dave Callaham, was keen to keep the atmosphere of the game intact whilst making some 'necessary' story changes. The changes? Well, Doom won't be set on Mars. The monsters have nothing to do with Hell. Space marines are SWAT teams. The monsters will, apparently, be people mututated by a secret virus.
Gosh, how original. Have they seen Resident Evil?
The report is the latest in a series that don't exactly lend the movie credit. The director recently hired to take over the project, Andrzej Bartkowiak, has such high-quality films as Species and Dante's Peak in his back-catalogue.
The lack of any kind of 'Hell' connection is something of a kicker. Doom 2 was subtitled 'Hell on Earth', and the key plot point of Doom 3 is that the monsters in-game are Hellspawn, hence the multiple pentograms and such vile creations as dead-baby-cherub-wasp combinations. A 'necessary' change, or a neat way to avoid right-wing criticism? We wonder.
The Doom movie is due out some time in 2005.

Heh. Exactly as I described it in my fake press release in the Doom 3 expansion thread.
* Spoilers; though since the movie has nothing to do with Doom 3, you're not missing much *
The marine guy visits the base to see his scientist sister. Together, they fight off the monsters being created by the "virus" on an unnamed alien planet. The virus turns people into outward versions of their inner selves (leading to corny lines like: "We've all got a monster inside"). Why doesn't the main character get infected? Because the virus knows he's "too good." That's the explanation. So in the end, his sister injects him with the virus, turning him into a super-angelic form to fight the monsters.
No Hell, no Mars, and no teleportation portals. It has very little to do with Doom. It's not hard to make a good horror film based on Doom. It's just hard to find people in Hollywood who would realize it (Sam Raimi for instance would do this right).
Edit: Neptune, you stretched the thread.

A Open Letter To Doom Fans From Dave Callaham
- 14 December 2004 00:03 - John [JCal] Callaham User Comments : 22
Editor's Note: Back in October, HomeLAN was fortunate to conduct a brief telephone interview with movie scriptwriter Dave Callaham, who wrote the script for the upcoming film version of id Software's hit first person shooter series Doom. The movie is currently filming in Prague for a scheduled release by Universal in August 2005. While Callaham briefly addressed the differences between the game and the film version in his HomeLAN interview, more recent news reports about the Doom movie have caused some public concerns about the Doom movie from fans of the game. Callaham, who recently returned from visiting the set of the Doom movie, contacted HomeLAN and asked to address the fans of the game directly about these reports. The following open letter from Callaham is posted below, completely unedited.
OPEN LETTER TO DOOM FANS
Dear Doom Fans:
Sometime in the last week or two, there was quite an uproar over a quote I allegedly made regarding my bravado in completely disfiguring the plot of the Doom games when I went about writing the screenplay for the film. First and foremost, allow me to state that I never made that quote. The reporting news source reported that I made that quote during an open press visit to the Doom set in Prague, during a week in which I was in fact in Los Angeles. Additionally, I want to add that I would never under any circumstances address either the press or the Doom fans with anything resembling the snide elitism that I perceive that quote to connote. In these regards, I consider the journalism involved to be nothing less than shoddy and irresponsible.
That said.
The screenplay I wrote DOES differ in a number of ways from the games. I want to be very honest and forthcoming in saying that, and I know that I won't make any friends amongst the fans of the game in doing so. But it should be mentioned that it was never the goal of anyone involved in this film, from myself and the producers to the studio to the guys at id, to make a direct film adaptation of the game(s). The thought process has always been to create an extension of the Doom universe that will give fans an interesting new take on the themes that they've come to enjoy in the game. Because let's be honest here: as far as a completely immersive and cinematic experience, we were never going to top Doom 3 anyway, and we all knew that. Instead, we have toyed with some elements of the game, and yes, I am pretty much solely responsible for that, since it was my pitch and my screenplay that got made. Let me assure you, though, that the themes and elements that you love about Doom are ALL represented strongly in the film...just with some new twists.
I've found it frustrating that I somehow became the goat for the perceived shortcomings of the film, because (and I say this with no humility whatsoever, because I'm not a humble person), that I am, without a doubt, the greatest ally the Doom fan has had during the entire process of the film being made. I am the only person involved creatively who has ever made any attempt to open discourse with the game's internet fanbase, and I am the only person involved who has continually kept the ideals of the game first and foremost in mind. I very truthfully believe that my unapologetic and hyper-violent script would have been a Doom fan's movie dream come true. However, since my involvement, the film has steadily moved away from the realm of fandom and more toward the realm of traditional Hollywood interests. It's not been ideal, in my opinion, but I did what I could when I could, and I stand by that work.
No film adaptation can ever match the expectations of the original fans, and the Doom movie will be no different. You as fans each have your own perfect version of the Doom film already shot in your head, and those versions aren't always what the guy next to you would want to see in the same movie (someone out there on doomworld.com sure loved the idea of Howie Long as Doomguy -- which is perfect aesthetically, but let's face it, totally absurd if you want this movie to come out in theatres). I myself have a perfect version of the Doom movie all played out in my head--I even wrote it down--and it's not getting made either. And I'm not always real happy about it, but I do understand that that is the nature of the Hollywood machine. The bottom line is there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of good people working their asses off on this movie right now, and you, just like me, have to trust them to do the best job they can. I don't enjoy watching a bunch of strangers bastardize my baby any more than you do, but really none of us can do anything about it at this point, so I hope that at least some of you will fret, with me, in the direction of optimism. We all have high expectations, and a lot of them won't be met, but the bottom line is the movie is going to be pretty cool.
Finally, to the fan that suggested I get an enema (ostensibly to clean out my head, I think): That was awesome.
Dave Callaham

Now why the hell would a film company liscense out a name such as Doom, and make it totally different from the product that already exsisted. They could have used the plot they have, while saving themselves money by not paying for the name DOOM that will likely turn more people off than it will on. Its not like the liscense contained anything else besides the name, I mean there isnt even a name for the Doom marine. WTF is this company liscensing things out for, if it isn't going to use the product. This is more puzzling to me than the 9 years that have gone by without DNF.

What's the point in changing the plot so much that it's not even Doom anymore? It's like they just made up a movie about zombies, and then bought the rights to call it Doom just to sell a few extra tickets.

To be fair, we cant accurately make that statement without seeing a trailer or some on-the-set shots.
To my understanding, they're using the Doom name and aesthetic, but bastardising the storyline for some god-unknown reason. I eamn taking out hell? I can understand a few PC reasons they'd do that. But taking out Mars and marines? I cant even ALMOST understand why that would do that. It's a freaking sci-fi story no matter which way you look at it, so there's no point in removing certain sci-fi elements to make it more 'general populous friendly'.
I mean even WITH the virus plot a Mars base would have suited prefectly because it would have been using recycled air, thus aiding the spread of the virus all throughout the base.

How much can it cost to get:
- A run down, metallic, sciency looking place with red landscape outside
- Police riot gear with "Space Marines" written on it
- Zombie makeup and costumes
- Some minor CGI for some demons
Let's face it, the movie couldn't feature every demon, but maybe a few with CGI.

^ I think some demons, like the Imp, could be pulled off without too much extensive CGI as well. The Imp is a pretty human-shaped demon so the only needed CGI would probably be from its fireballs and maybe a bit of its wall-crawling, IMO. The Archvile would be similar in that regard.

This is going to be so bad it's funny. I really see it ending up exactly like the RE movies mixed with those terrible mutated-monster movies SciFi channel loves so much. Sadly, I'll want to see it in theatres just out of curiousity but there's no way I'm giving money to these people.

Can't movie makers connect to a game and actually understand what makes one good and how to translate it into a good flick?

Coludn't possibly offensive references to Hell be best addressed by replacing Hell with an unnamed (but completely similar) "alter dimension" or something? I realize that this solves only the least of the problems in adapting DooM to the screen, but no one else seems to have thought of this.
(Not to miss your point, but there was grass (or something that apparently resembled it) in the original two DooM games. Maybe (hopefully) the producers simply have outdated information?)

1. The tone: There's nothing soft or watered-down about "Doom." In their own words, the makers of the film are going for a "Hard R." Excellent news for Doomers.
2. The set: Every set, every corridor, every weapon looks faithful to the game. The set is a maze of dark corridors, steel-dungeony-looking hallways that should be scary as hell. The arsenal of weapons includes several nods to the game, including, of course, the BFG.
3. The effects: Bartkowiak is using real models when possible, minimizing the employment of green screens. For instance, the monsters have real monster costumes--dark and creepy. The "Baron," in particular, looks like an "Aliens"-worthy creature. Much more on him later.
4. The story: The script is loosely based on the "Doom 3" videogame. Sometime in the future, John Grimm (Karl Oben), Sarge (The Rock), and a military -esque crew receive a distress call from a science lab on the remote planet Olduvai. (No, that's not a cologne.) They teleport to Olduvai. Once on Oldvuai, they're thrown into a maelstrom of dimly-lit hallways, monsters, and bloodshed. The setup might differ slightly from the game, but it's the same meat and potatoes.

In that article they are giving the impression this movie will please fans, meaning it is more true to the game. Has this been done before?

Aside from the uniform differences and removal of demonic references, it seems they may have gotten some things right, according to this HOllenshead interview:
http://www.g4tv.com/g4tv/features/51945/Enemy_Mine_Todd_Hollenshead_Speaks.html
Did you give the special effects guys and costume designers any instructions?
We just told them, “We’d like you to take our creatures and make them appropriate for the movie.” And the special effects guys said, “We don’t wanna mess with perfection on these things, we just wanted to build it out so it was as true to what we saw in the game.” They felt they were starting with such a great art source for the character suits, so they just made them come to life.
The costumes are straight out of the game. I was like, “Wow, this is really amazing.” Even though I've played the game a million times, you can’t reach out and feel the slime dripping out of the Hell Knight as he roars at you. But I did!

We’re video game developers, not movie people. We really don’t have any interest in trying to be movie people. We’re petty good at making video games and we like doing what we do, so we’re not going to try to make movies. I think people who have been video game developers and have tried to make movies haven’t really done a very good job of it, so we like to leave the movie stuff up to the movie people.
Well yeah, if the movie makers come are experienced than yes it would be good but these peoples resume show mediocre productions!

Maybe all the horrifying rumors were just clever marketing. I hope its good. If a video game movie actually makes a lot of money maybe the studios will be more willing to throw talent at them instead of the crap they have been shoveling out in the past.

This is the internet, so not everything released is always fact. Plus things were probably changed down the road, after the reaction from the fan-base.
Or maybe they just released false info on purpose, then surprise us with news like this.
Either way... having Mars, Hellknights and Pinky demons... it sounds as if the Doom movie could actualy be a good movie.

It's during the future of Mars. They installed a bio dome. So people no longer nedd space suit on it's surface.
They've gone over to the Navy or black close quaters fatigues to give them the stealth advantage. As the dark colors and slim form enable them to blend into the backround better. They need it to sneak up on those demons.
I think they're doing it to make it look less fruity and more badass. The Marines that are stationed in the game are there for security. In the movies screens the marines they picture look like a spec ops team or assault team.

Exactly. Doom isn't about a virus that makes monsters. It's about actual monsters from another dimension warping into Earth's space colonies and invading them. It's about the military defending their martian bases being overrun, in dark corridors, not about a SWAT team saving people.

Movies with bad scripts (read: movies made from games) usually get requested from producers and the like to have a more mainstream element so it can be excused it sucks. This leads to them trying to explain everything, hence they couldn't leave it with the basic story you get from the game. No cinemagoers would bother with that http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You know the Delta Force, Navy Seals and Marines use the same black fatigues when deploying into an area in which such a color pattern would be beneficial. Also during a special operation in which they only plan on being in the area for a short time and they're planning on being gone before daylight. They wear black.
So How do you know if they're a SWAT team? You assume so because they wear black uniforms? Maybe they chose the black because they want to take advantage of the low light condition.
SWAT teams wear Woodland stripe and olive drab when deploying into rural areas woodlands when they have to serve a warrant on some hill billys.
SWAT actually means something. Just because a guy is an investigator or detective that doesn't make him FBI or CIA. Same with SWAT Without the Special Weapons and without the Special Tactics they're no more than a standard assault team or tactical team. SWAT specializes in Rescuing everybody from the situation while preventing or minimizing any further violence. That's why Cleveland SWAT is one the very few SWAT teams in the united States that is recognized and commisioned as a SWAT team by LAPD. There's plenty of other people that try to brand their tactical teams as SWAT.

I'll admit I may be wrong about this movie. This is certainly looking a lot better than the crap we were hearing about it before.
I'll even be open-minded about the genetic monkey business being the cause of the havok in the movie......there are ways to make it work if you think about it.
Originally in the game, it was some portal technology experiment that went bad and opened a gateway to hell.
Now think about it for a minute......portals? They could barely colonize mars! Where were they trying to "teleport" to? New Jersey? It didn't make a whole lot of sense....but we accepted it because, well....that was the original story.....and it worked. It did what it needed to do at the time.
Now, this idea with the hidden genome.....written properly, it could work just as well.....it could be that the unlocking the hidden genome is much like unlocking a gateway to hell within the very bodies and souls of human beings (which would be why it was hidden).
It's a stretch, I know, but I think it could work. The bitch of it, though, is with this kind of explanation, how are you gonna get cool visuals like in the game where parts of the base become hellishly organic and twisted. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I'd be pretty sad if the movie was just in this dull grey base with mutant zombies running amok. There's nothing new or even creative about that... There has to be more to it......I'm hoping so......but it's too soon to tell now.
Still, I'm glad there's Mars, Hell, and demons in it now at least.....it actually makes the space/SWAT/rescue/whatever they are's that much more forgiveable.....The only inconsistencies from the source material now as I see them are just mere semantics compared to the blatant disregard from before (planet "Olduvai"? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif).
Nice to know the fans are being listened to this time.
Y'know.....with this "rescue squad" set up, it's actually more like the original Doom this way.
In that one, as opposed to Doom 3, the main character wasn't actually there when hell started to break loose. He arrived afterwards on a rescue mission.
Here's hoping they don't fyck it up.

I thought the idea in the original Doom was that they were testing this new portal technology on Mars (or rather its moons) because it was too dangerous to test on Earth. They had portals on Phobos and Deimos, and threw things into one that popped out of the other. Think of the applications that could have had if it hadn't involved the things travelling via Hell and attracting Satan's attention! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I don't know anymore... before I was ready to completely write this movie off, but that teaser was interesting... not great, but it did give me the first bit of hope I've had for this movie in months. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
That said, I'm still not exactly optimistic--- the SWAT-esque uniforms and virus plotline are still lame, IMO. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif But the setting being back on Mars, an R-Rating and the Rock's comments implying that Hell is still involved are at least improvements from how the movie originally seemed to be shaping up. And the monsters do look pretty awesome.
Overall, I'm just gonna go into "wait and see" mode at this point.

Ouch...
well you're entitled to your opinion. I'll wait until I know more about the movie's current direction before I form mine.

How about we just wait and see this movie in the theatre and then give our opinions hmm? Its a braindead action movie, for sure, however in my list of best movies of all time I have tons of those.
Give peace....err...Doom a chance.

/horrible Resident evil flashback
The whole teaser looked like RE (movie) clone to me, same kind of shiny metal rooms, a special ops team going into the complex to be slained by a monsters.
But still it looked good, not excatly in top of my list of movies to wait, but still looks like a movie to watch.
Micki!

As long as there is no 'Hell' in this movie, I won't ever remember this movie as Doom...

My thoughts exactly. There's no gloomy Mars Colony, no aliens, etc. This is Resident Evil in space.

Yeah looks a lot like an RE clone.
If not for the name it would be just another B grade summer action flick. Sadly it might turn out to be that anyways.

According to the webpage (www.doommovie.com), Olduval is the name of the station on Mars.

I was worried it was gonna be lacking in the atmosphere and ambiance, but seeing more of the movie now, the feeling is definately there. It looks, feels and even sounds a lot like Doom as we know it.
It's not perfect, but what movie is?
I'm looking forward to this one now.

Damn.......they took the video down. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif They said they had to because it had footage of the movie in it. If I were the movie people, I'd allow the footage to be seen. It's great PR.
I feel a lot more confident in the movie now that I've seen that preview footage.
I knew I shoulda saved the video, but it was just too damned big (nearly 4 GBs ) and most of it was just those guys in the panel yapping about how excited they are about the movie.
WASD says they'll have the video back up soon.....but they're gonna take the movie footage out, so it's pretty pointless since Todd and them are only saying pretty much the same stuff they said at Comic Con. The creature animation guy's bit was interesting, though.
Oh well....

4 gigs? My download was 170 MB about. I still have it!
But they say the trailer is coming in about 3 weeks so that's alright. I just wonder if it'll have the pinky in it, because in the WASD footage, when they showed the pinky - it appeared like it wasn't part of the trailer (it has Quakecon text over it).

I streamed it and tried to save it when it finished loading and that's what it was telling me.
It was taking forever to save it, too and it was already 5:00 in the morning when I decided "screw it".

I haven't read any of the posts in here. I just came in to say that this is the worst movie website I have ever seen, and that I believe it's unprofessionally done:
http://www.doommovie.com/
Dr.Dude
08-20-2005, 01:13 AM
Well, that probably explains why they seem to be hiding the website from public view as best as they can. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Googling anything from "Doom" to "Doom movie", "Doom film" or even "Doom Universal" doesn't give any links to the official site... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I didn't even know an official site existed until sometime yesterday, because of my not getting any search results on it and being too lazy to search any harder.

I'm not completely sure, but is this the same Quakecon preview that got put up and taken down on the last page of this thread?

...In any case, I just gotta say that the Pinky Demon looks f-ckin' awesome. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif After watching that preview I'm actually starting to look forward to this, amazingly enough. The look, atmosphere and monsters seem like they really might have captured the Doom feeling in this movie.

Shows some first person views.. alot of them actually, it's hard to tell if that will become annoying though.
The last scene in the trailer looks cool though.
