I noticed a lack of MGS topics in here, and thats a crime. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is tied with Half-Life 2 as my fav game of 2004. Runner up, Ninja Gaiden. "Snake vs Monkey" may be the funniest mini-game in history.

So what do people think about MGS3? Hideo Kojima says its the last MGS game he'll direct, however his team may continue the series. I loved the MGS remake for Gamecube, Twin Snakes, which was made by Canadian developer Silicon Knights, of all people. Call me old fashioned, but I'd like Solid Snake to star in the next one.

I tried the demo and found the controls extremely awkward. It showed a camera view of my backpack which had gotten caught in a tree, and told me to get it, then went back down to the normal camera view looking down at me. After that I couldn't figure out how to get to the goddamn backpack.

I'd look up in first person and think I saw it, then let go of the button to have the camera swing all around back to the normal view and I have little idea which way to run to go the direction I'd turned in first person. The thing is, I played MSG2 and thought the controls would be easy, but I found myself unable to fight the forest. I figure if I had to fight other people I'd be done for.

Granted, the top down view is a tad oldschool. I think it suites MGS's play style perfectly, though. If the series continues, I'd be fine with a more traditional camera. Resident Evil 4 dropped the series trademark cinematic angles for a 3rd person camera, and it works brilliantly for it. So hey, it could work.

More MGS news, David Hayter, the voice of Snake and also the screenplay writer of the X-Men films, pitched the idea of a Metal Gear Solid movie to Universal. That would make one hell of a movie.

It was a great game...I finished it on Very Easy http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and now starting on Normal.

At first, I was frustated with the new camera style, and no enemy radar with the new camo system. But as the game moved on, the control was much more smoother and the story was just captivating.

I love how they have lots of Easter Eggs for replaying. Snake Vs Monkey was fun too.

It's one of the best games on the PS1, and MGS2-3 are some of the best on the PS2.

MGS3 is the best in the series, but it's story isn't quite as good as MGS2. The top down view is MGS's trademark, and I hope they never change it. It's what makes MGS, MGS..

As for MGS 4, it's in development, and it will continue the story of MGS2, which is good, because I'm anxious to find out what happend next.

I finished MGS3:SE with a fox hound rank. The game was pretty good as it felt like the original nes ones.

But I don't know why they even bothered to name it mg SOLID....as it didn't have any relation with the SOLID series...I mean you know if you base it on this Snake Vs Shago...oh well don't want to spoil it for pal people.

I didn't like the snake vs monkey but finished it to get the unlockables. I wish they make another game based on Snake than Solid Snake.

The SOLID in Metal Gear Solid reffers to the fact that the series is now in 3D. Polygons are known as solids ya know? But your assumption is a known misconception.

Then again, Metal Gear isn't in MGS3 though http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That's not Metal Gear. That's Jehuty from Zone of Enders, another game made by Kojima. Fantastic game btw (the second one).

Nah, there's a concept design for Metal Gear Rex from MGS1 either on the papers he gives you or as an actual model sitting around on the shelf. I can't really recall at the moment, though -- I'll try to take a screenie or something when I get there on my second playthrough.

Maybe the papers then, but the model on the shelf was defintely Jehuty

Yeah, I remember that. I love the inclusion of the little R1 look in cutscenes. There's so many little details to find if you look around enough. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

No way! H.K. said that Snake Eater was going to be the Last MGS game he would make. (although thats what he said about MGS 2...)

Thats actually kind of interesting, since when I played MGS2 I thought it would have made a better movie than game, since the game seemed to just be a movie where you had to maybe fight 2 times and run around some place to get to the next cutscene. The story itself kind of was interesting, aside from the characters that were way too over the top.

It looks like the guy that does the voice of snake is one of the writers for the Xmen movies, and is directing another comic book movie. I wonder if he would be directing the Metal Gear movie.

Hugh Jackman might make a good person to play snake.

Its great to hear Metal Gear Solid 4's in development. Whoever directs it has some large shoes to fill, though, as Kojima is the master. Here's the IGN story (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/565/565308p1.html).

IMO MGS on PS1 is the best MGS game. One of my favorite games of all time. I was thinking about buying TTS, but is it worth it? I heard the controls didn't port well and some of the voices got f*cked up.

I heard that too. It's not like the RE port, TTS isn't really worth picking up unless you are a diehard fan.

I've noticed most people who bash The Twin Snakes haven't played it. Its a great game, and a perfect remake. It improves upon the original by adding first-person shooting, a tranq-gun, hanging on railings, and the roll move. It also has improved voice-acting, and amazing cut scenes by master action director Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus, Azumi, Godzilla Final Wars). You can find it cheap now too, its a must have for the MGS fan.

You're damn right. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif And I've got to say, MGS3: Snake Eater is a masterpiece, by far the best balance of storytelling and gameplay I've ever seen. The boss fights are creative and intense, definitely some of the best in the series. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/thumbsup.gif

If you have a GameCube and are an MGS fan of any variety, there is no reason to not buy The Twin Snakes when you have a chance. It's a perfect port with added elements from MGS2's controls, completely re-acted dialogue, (that are just as good as any MGS voice acting, considering it utilizes the same actors as before), AMAZINGLY done cutscenes... seriously. Whoever says this game isn't up to par with any other MGS game is lying.

The only problem one could possibly have with the controls is that first-person shooting makes some of the boss fights a lot easier -- Ocelot's fight, for example, comes to mind. Still, it's not like you have to use it in cases that you don't want or need to. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Honestly, it's one of the best purchases I've made for my GameCube. The scene when the Ninja murders all those guards before you find Otacon... I nearly wet my pants. I'll try to post a picture of it later. The reworked and added cutscenes add so much; damn, I need to go play it again. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

I thought TTS was ass. The controsl were just awful. Everything was awkward. Also, it didn't seem to play as well as MGS and MGS2. It just didn't feel like a MGS game. The features of MGS2 that were included just dind't work well in the original's setting.

I agree with seregrail7. Also I'm not a big fan of the top down view. I found it kinda hard to actually see where the enemies are. And the radar doesn't really cover much more than the actual screen.

Some parts of the game were really, really cool, such as when Psycho Samantis(sp) tells you to put down the controller so he can demonstrate his psychic powers by moving it. Then Snake looks directly at you and kind of nods "do it". I really loved that http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have no idea since I never played the PS1 version. My comments weren't specifically aimed at any version of the game in particular. They were of the more general sort so to speak http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It happens in the PS1 version, but Snake never looks at the camera and nods.

It's little touches like that (and big touches as well) in the cutscenes of TTS that add so much to the experience.

seregrail7
01-15-2005, 03:59 PM
Tbh, I thought the cutscenes were really bad. Not the animation, but the style. Snake has just come out of retirement in that game, yet he's doing all this mad ninja crap. Sure, it looked cool. But it seemed stupid for snake to be doing it.

Lengis
01-15-2005, 04:12 PM
Snake is an expert in martial arts, and a hardened war vet. He better be able to fight or he has no bussiness in a solo military operation.

seregrail7
01-15-2005, 04:20 PM
He's in his 40s as well. And jumping on a rocket, come on. Also, spinning in the air and kicking part of the falling cieling towards an enemy.

Hell, even Kojima said he thought it could've been better, he also said he'd never work with that cut-scene director again.

SyntaxN

I think all those cut-scenes are very cool, I love this Style and they are gory in some times, I love that too http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

GrkFire611
01-15-2005, 05:17 PM
I agree with you on that one, but outside of a couple of notably goofy scenes (some of which you mentioned), I thought the style was all right. Some of the expanded scenes were incredible. Others were only lukewarm. The gameplay was still as good as every other MGS, though, and the story was still exactly the same as MGS1's, so I overlooked those particular scenes.

Obviously, nothing can really touch the magic I still feel when playing the original PS1 MGS, though. MGS 1-3 have to be my favorite games I've ever played, so I was glad that The Twin Snakes managed to at least come somewhat close to my high expectations. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

seregrail7
01-15-2005, 05:22 PM
I must say that towards the end of TTS the game got better. Maybe the level design was better suited to the gameplay in that half. The boss fights were good, but it just seemed to lack the overall polish of an MGS game.

On anothet note, I'm playign through MGS2 at the moment. I'm collecting dog tags to get the camo and so on. I remember getting almost all of the dog tags back when it came out. I was hooked.

Where'd you hear this? I've read that Kitamura was going to keep the cut-scenes exactly true to MGS, but Kojima told him to "go nuts". http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Anyways, Ryuhei Kitamura is the best director of action movies in Japan today, and thats that. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The Twin Snakes has a great soundtrack, I should add. The rescored theme goes up about 10 notches on the epic meter.

I got to the part with that ass named FEAR. Climbing trees and shouting "FEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARR!!" I didn't feel like battling so I quit, put in silent Hill 4 and haven't gone back to play MGS3 since.

Same with Resident Evil 4. I became bored with it and never finished it.

As for the crotch grabbing Asians are fans of Mike Jackson. So they think it's cool to grab the crotch... And molest children.

I know how they work. I've played the first and the second one. Loved the first, didn't really like the second and became bored with the third.
