Duke3D 1.0 was first released to Software Creations' BBS on January 29, 1996 -- it's been nine long years since this game changed gaming. How has Duke3D affected some of your lives? I didn't get my first computer until I saw Duke3D on a demo machine at a nearby Wal-Mart. I can safely say that had Duke3D not been released, I may not have taken an interest in computers at all.

You guys can use this thread for any semi-off-topic stories you may have about how Duke3D has changed your life in one way or another. I hope some of you reply, lest I feel like a gigantic dork who starts threads nobody replies to.. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I spent my entire birthday waiting for them to upload the shareware of Duke 3D, and what a birthday gift it was. Duke 3D ultimately led to me becoming a game developer. Many people have their dream career or their dream place or their dream project, and I've been fortunate enough to land all three in one sweep. I can honestly say that Duke 3D has affected my life more than anything else, and so getting to work on the true sequel is a realization of a life goal. I'm not sure how how I'll handle it being complete. What will I have to look forward to then? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That said, I do have a special suprise coming for you guys very soon. Feel free to speculate away, but it's something that has been asked for many times since the Duke 3D source was released. Happy Birthday Duke!

*Speculation* shadow warrior code.

On topic

I still remember the first time I played it my mate brought his copy down mine and we loaded it up I must have been around 10\11 at the time , Anyway we played it for hours and at the one point my mam came upstairs duke decided to shout at the top of his voice "die you son of a bitch" she cam in asking what he just said....... Thinking fast on our feet we replied "dam I fell down a ditch" some how she bought it had we carried on playing.

I will have to ask her next time she visits if she really did buy it or not.

I must admit that the idea to fill duke3d with babes was a great idea. The first time I played it it was on a pc that couldn't run it properly - leaving it unplayable. However, the knowledge that the game had babes made me install it the minute there was a faster pc available.
The first project I worked on was a nude patch for all the babes using editart, and even though it was a grand success I had to delete it when my brother came home because it was his pc. I decided to make maps with hidden babes so that I could show him what I made, without him noticing the overusage of babes ( that I hid in secret rooms and such ).

Now, alot of years later, I'm patiently waiting for the babe 3d model to be finished.

I like the game as well btw. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ah, heh, great news. I didn't get Duke 3d until I was sorta at the age of nine, I liked the game, probably even it's custom user maps that I downloaded. (2001 probably..) The strippers didn't bother me one bit though.

Happy birthday, ye ol' sonma gun Duke. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif (No offense though.)

well Duke3D has to be the greatest sensation in my young gaming life. You see, my parents had always kept a close eye on what I played, to keep me a little 'protected' from too much gore/sex/violence. Since Wolf3D I couldn't play anymore shooters (long story) and when I convinced my parents that Duke3D had a Parental Lock function, I was finally able to buy it!

The Parental Lock function was never used ofcourse, but they didn't mind anymore http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

so without Duke3D, I still might be playing Puzzle/platformers and not know anything of the blessing that is to be DNF http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

nine years already? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif wow time does fly.

i didnt got duke3d right away, but when i bought my first pc back in 1998. i did play it at school during computer class and i remember being blown away by it. there was no sound on the school computers so i didnt get to hear all those awesome one liners until a few years later.

after a while i loaded up build to see what it would do, and fumbled around for a bit, about a year later i was mapping for duke http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif \o/

ahh, the memories http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[edit] nifty coincidence, duke nukem 3d is exactly 6 years younger than my little sister who celebrates her birthday today http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gifie:

When I first saw Duke3d I was 8, I remember it well. It was when we got a new PC but it was a second hand and the guy we brought it from never wiped the hard drive and Duke3D was on there. Shortly after when it was my 9th birthday I brought the game re-installed it and added sound to it and the game became something to never forget. And just think how old this game is and think how many people still play on it today.

3D realms did a superb job with this game, it truley is one of the best games of all times.

8 years ago I came to my friend's house and he decided to show me DN3D shareware, because he didn't know how to beat a certain level, which soon turned out to be the first one. I must admit I was a complete FPS newbie at that time. Anyway, Holywood Holocaust loads up, he starts to blast his way through and I'm thrilled and amazed at the same time to the point of exclaming: "Computers can do that!?". As my frind approaches the night club I'm counting money needed to be spent on a computer and he says: "now's the part in which I'm stuck". The doors to the night club open, pig cops squeal, strippers dance, liztroopers float, music rocks, lights flicker... "You go and try to find an exit from here, I checked everywhere else and didn't find it", he says. As I try to adopt to the unknown control scheme, I look around and my eyes catch a glimpse of a ventilation shaft. "Hey did you try there?" I ask, "Are you stupid, you can't just crawl in a ventiltion shaft in a game!". Man, was he surprised when I shot it open! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Multiplayer seems unlikely..as Ken and JonoF are taking care of that.

They got something working, 3D Realms staff..compiling the Shadow Warrior source code works?

Other than that, I have no idea what else there could be. Any actual enhancements for Duke3D would surely be left to JonoF and Ken...

My first exposure to Duke3D was when I was waiting for the after-school drivers ed class to start, a teacher let me hang out in the computer lab and showed me this new demo he got. One look at Duke and Doom has been dead to be ever since! Shortly before the end of the school year I got a copy of the demo from a classmate and installed it on my home PC. I was stunded as it was the first time I got to play it with sound and at 640x480 to boot!

I have vauge memories playing Duke3D back when I was around 8 (blame my Dad :P). It was okay, but I was more intrested in platformer games at the time.

I started getting back into Duke3D when I found a copy of 'Quest of Al'Queda: The Hunt for Bin Laden' somewhere on a CD. I put it in and was kinda hooked. I read Jesse Petrilla (the creator of QfA) and read that the game was made using the build engine. So, I looked around and found a Duke3D demo. Played it, and was hooked. Then I rooted around in my CD stash and found Duke3D atomic. Put it in and was even more hooked. Found the forums here and here I am. :P

I first saw Duke3D on my friends PC. He was stuck in Death Row... I wanted to see the game from the beggining and I-WAS-ASTONISHED. Jesus, that was way, way,WAY better than Doom I played then. I just had to have it. When I got it, the friend showed me Nuclear Winter... Damn, I love this game... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

I have been programming since 1978 and my policy was always that computers were never designed for games and no game was allowed on my PC until December 1996 when my son insisted I installed Duke Nukem Atomic Addition as he wanted to show me what 3d graphics look like.
To keep him quiet I installed it and WOW that was it, even my wife agreed, it was the best thing since sliced bread.
We were hooked and have been ever since.

Happy Birthday to Duke3d and also my heartiest congratulations to JonoF, Ken and all the many people on this forum with their fantastic texture and model upgrades.

I first played this at my cousin and was like damn, cool. But I didn't know about the name of the game. Then my brother started talking about something that allowed you to make your own maps. He couldnt remember if it was Blood or Duke3D, then we went to the shop and bought Duke3D and yep, that was the one. First few months were hard and without having a good internet connection I was only able to learn how to map by looking at other maps and by asking friends. Then in 98 I first went to Dukeworld, 3DRealms forums and other sites and I downloaded tutorials on how to map. Slowely my knowledge and way of designing became better, made tons of maps, worked on too many Tcs, even made my own (Borg Nukem), worked on plenty of sites and now.. in 2005, Im still messing around with Duke while I dont know why. I feel like I've been here too long but it's hard to completely let it go.

Happy anniversary Duke (note hes older then the game).

Been trying to think of a good story for my post here didn't really come up wit anything but this.

I remember seeing the shareware on my friends PC, he was trying to beet the boss, there was flying, babes, looking up and down - The game was amazing, unfortunately i have trouble remembering names, so it first after a few years of searching that i finally found the game (atomic editing) but for all that time the game had kept scratching the back of my mind.
About half a year later i tryd the build editor and have been editing games ever since, even worked as a pro for 6 month, witch i hope to return to when i finish my education and stuff http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ah, Duke! It was somewhere in Feb 96, I believe. There was just a review for the shareware in a magazine, raving and raving. But I got this line that said 'still 2d engine not the Quake 3d', and I thought "Oh, man, so who cares about this game then?" Anyway, we just got our first internet connection, and since there wasn't much else to do and the Quake demo was FAR too huge for a measily 56k modem, Duke it was.

"Let's rock." --> Hmm.

"Damn, those alien bastards are gonna pay for shooting up my ride." --> Duke is god!!!!

Only quit playing when windows no longer allowed me to play it, and now that it does, I'm playing it again.

We should all go to HL2 and D3 forums and such. "So you guys still playing those old dummy games? I'm playing the real game of the century guys: Duke Nukem 3D!!!!" http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wooot! Already NINE years ??!! Happy birthday Duke!

I'm afraid I'm still as hooked as I was when I first started playing. I'm still working my way through tons of usermaps (lack... of... time... is... killing... me...). Apart from meddling with the source code I've been tweaking everything. I have played around with the con code and release a package of fixes and for two years already I'm working on a huge tutorial with new effects (a bit in the vein of complex effects Patola introduced). I'm afraid it will still take ages, I only have time to spent every now and then.

Thanks to all the great mappers, the people who wrote tutorials (Jonah Bishop to name but one), and the current community that has spawned around Jonof's port. It's impressive how vibrant the community around this game remains http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why couldn't you have waited until next year to celebrate an even decade for D3D? That would be REALLY worth the celebration by then, wouldn't you think? BTW, happy ninth year to you, and I shall be playing at least one round of D3D every weekend or so as I see fit... I was 10 or 11 when duke 3d came out, I remember being so addicted to duke and doom when I was a youngin', I had to have racked up months and months of playtime at that young age. I think computer games and Duke must have introduced me to the world of computers as well because shortly after playing these games I became a computer addict/ nerd and I still am today, so much so that I stayed up some entire nights until my father unplugged my modem and took my keyboard/ mouse from me http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hhg.gif. Its funny I was hit with a nostalgia lapse just a few weeks ago and reinstalled my atomic edition and downloaded all the build game demos and played them all through again, I now remember why Duke was so amazing to me when I was a kid, its still amazing to me as an adult! Thanks for the memories and I hope you guys can give me some new ones with Duke Nukem Forever!

I've still got a copy of the magazine with the Duke3D shareware version From nr4 May 1996. Bought it while visiting my sister, that was about 10+ hours in a car away from home (and the PC).
The presentation of the game really got my attention right away. And my fantasy did the rest, before I got home and tried the Demo to then be blown away! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Woohoo! And to top it of, it was the first-ever PC-Mac magazine I bought. 3 Months or so after this I finally got the 1.3 fullversion!

The translated Presentation of Duke 3D from Swedish:
"The game that makes Doom Fade away. DUKE NUKEM 3D
Anyone who've played Doom and been impressed by it's 3D graphics and the feeling of freely moving around in an artificial world can re-think this. Doom is no longer the hottest 3D game...
3DRealms, which earlier made games like Rise of The Triads and Terminal Velocity, have now succeeded with a 3D-game without it's equality.
With a graphics engine that pumps information to the screen like a bolted X-2000 train and at the same time manages to keep track on 8 network players in a completely natural faithful 3D-world, has made this game a very entertaining one.
The object of the game is playing Duke to save the world from invading aliens, accept from raw muscle-power you've got access to the most devestating arsenal that can be carried by a lone man.
To start with you get two. Your Mighty Foot and an automatic-pistol. Both can cause great damage to the enemy.
Just like in Doom you can shoot anything that moves and solve puzzles at the same time. It can be anything from pressing the correct button or blowing holes in walls to get further into the game.
Since your enemies as well as you are stubborn it takes better and more powerful weapons and above all alot of ammunition. Guns like, pump-action shotgun, remote controlled pipebombs, (laser-rifles, flamethrower?) RPG's, tripmines and a shrinkray.
It's not only the weapons that give you the advantage to finish this extremely difficult game, to your help you've also got the jet-pack to send you flying, stereoids that makes you run faster, and a hologram you can place here and there to lure the enemies.
The biggest difference between for example, Doom and Duke3D is the huge amount of scenery and machines placed around in the game.
Here's a possibility too visit the cinema, a stripbar and stay underwater. You can even use the toilet! It should be noted that this game is filled to the limit with violence and even sex, not that it's made for children anyhow. If the possibility arose that a children would play the game, worried parents can take note there's a censur-function. Which is password protected you state yourself.
Humor is another feature that's not economized. Duke walks around smaltalking to himself, expressing rough quotations a 'la Bruce Willis. To hear Duke's hoarse voice saying "Lookin' good" while seeing himself in the mirror can make the most confirmed hardcore-gamer to sneer.
You can sit for an eternity finding new details around the game without stopping to admire the creativity the team behind this game must've had.
The full game's Disc contains the Build-Editor, where you can modify the game after your own pleasures. Why not redraw the graphics or add new sounds? All details inside the game can me altered, so there are no limits to what you might be able to do.
Duke3D even supports network and modem games (This is where the game is at it's full right)
The only critique you might add about the game is that it's not first in it's genre, but you have to be broad-minded and not diss a product for not being the first in the world.
No Production manages without to little competition, there's always room for improvement.
3DRealms has in this respect really made it, and is well worth the hightes grade, 5!"

phew, not repeating something like this again (until DNF 9th Birthday perhaps). Sorry if there's any spelling errors or misleading grammar anywhere, but I was in a hurry for bed, work tomorrow.
Ohh and Happy Birthday Duke Nukem 3D! :Yay!: Hail to the 3DRealms baby!

The primary speculation you guys had was naturally correct. This past weekend I finally got the Shadow Warrior code compiling and launching. There is still quite a lot of work that needs to go into it before it's ready for release, but it's on it's way. Be patient, but you don't have to be *quite* as patient as before anymore. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I really wanted it for an Xmas present but we couldn't get our hands on the complete code set. Then I wanted New Years and the same problem. Then I wanted it ready for Duke's birthday, but there were too many problems with compiling. Since I only get to work on it in my spare time and DNF tends to consume most of my spare time already, it takes a little while. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It'll be just like the Duke 3D release. Compiled under Open Watcom and with as few changes as possible to get it running again so that you guys can peruse the original code. There will be a goodies directory of unused stuff as well. Unfortunately I'm having to gut the 3DFX code from the version due to uncertainty with legalities, but since JonoF is going to be porting it to the new OpenGL engine that Duke is now using, it isn't that important.

Hopefully within a week or two it'll be out, but it's honestly just WID. har har http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif At least it's finally coming though. I'm looking forward to playing SW with the upgrades we enjoy in Duke 3D now.

Hey, Chinese New Year's right around the corner, what a more appropriate day to release SW source code than on the day that Lo Wang is more than proud to celebrate! After all, it's in one of Lo Wang's expressions "Just like Chinese New Year Fireworks!" I can see that this is gonna be the "Year of the SW Code!" I know that's not on the Chinese Zodiac, but it's quite close to being somewhere on that calendar!

This is great news! I've 'sort of' been running the original
SW on my xp pro system, but it doesn't run 100% right. I
can't think of a better person the jonof to do the main porting
of the SW code, since most of the hard work has already
been done with duke 3d, doing the same for SW should be
a lot easier this time around. It'll be great to see SW in all
its' glory with jonofs' new engine! (And we can fix current
bugs, and add new features too!).. Can't wait for the SW
source code release!!

Man, was he surprised when I shot it open! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

for a long time i wondered if there was a proper way to do that level.

forcing the player through a secret seems strange to me.

I looked in build but i couldn't find anything.

did 3DR miss a switch or forget to remove the secret area marker or somthing?

my guess is that in an early version of that map, the vent was just a secondary means of finishing the level.

Finally! It's been so long! As much as I love Duke, I've always loved Shadow Warrior even more - it was the multiplayer. Heat-seekers, nukes, ripper heart, sticky bombs - everything was just so cool! Thank you so much 3DR!

Hi, this is my first post. Im sure some of you may know me. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hhg.gif Anyways, I remember playing duke in of 96(I was four.... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif no parental lock either) my bro had brought home an excellent game! He said he had played this many times before and it was awesome. But he also said that it made him sick and I could play it. So as any kid would, I immediately played it. It was fun to me, shooting things was a new thing to me and it seemed funny.I had a few problems with the cussing but I grew up in a pretty good family, this kind of thing was excepted more then other houses(my dad is a cop, so I'm exposed to other things). But then he had to take it away for a week or so(he had borrowed it). The guy had finally not wanted the game anymore, so he gave it to me. Then about this time it was 97, he also had Shadow Warrior. I ended up playing Shadow Warrior too. But he wanted SW back. I havent really played it much since, but when the new port comes, Im definitely gonna find a working version. And of course Im still playing today, and even modding.

Damn, didn't see this thread.
Yay for Duke!
I first played Duke3d when I was about 12 and at a friend's house.
Man, I had played Doom and Doom 2 and always ended up getting bored after 5 minutes but as soon as I saw Duke I was hooked.
My friend let me sit down and he showed me the controls. SO MANY BUTTONS.
After about 30 seconds of me just hitting buttons my friend kicked me off the computer and went back to playing.
Duke Nukem 3d has changed my life considerably since then.
Build was the first level editor I ever worked with and I made dozens upon dozens of maps and then I told everyone I was going to be a level designer.
I don't think my family took me seriously until 6 years later I was saying the same shit and paying my way through art school. My dad is thrilled (he was a programmer for games) and he is giving me all his lil good luck items from his career.
All because of Duke 3d.
*****, such a great game.

Oh, and Shadow Warrior source. SWEET.

It's got the music as CD-Audio, which rocks (I shall be ripping to --aps mp3 and adding to my playlist http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif) - is that what you meant?

I had also totally forgotten about the fact that the UK version was slightly censored (darts instead of shurikens), but thankfully 3DR have a patch for that http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Edit for bonus screenshot (I like the subtle hint that 3DR put in - "Hey guys, we had to censor this version, but visit our website - you never know http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif")

Not in that sense, the Mp3 songs AREN'T in the SW CD, thus, I can't play the game without the high-quality songs..

WHy was it even censcored in the first place? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Eclipse

Because if they didn't censor it, it would never have been allowed a release over here.

There were a lot of things cut from various mediums to do with ninjas. It was a long time ago, but I think shurikens were completely banned in the UK (I have vague memories of someguy going nuts with some? that may be wrong), and even the original series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had a name change to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. Again, if I remember correctly this sort of thing started with the popular martial arts films of the 60s/70s and kids hurting themselves trying to copy them.

After being unable to touch it for over a month, I've finally got it up and running for real. This isn't anything like the Duke 3D source and required a helluva lot more work to get it to compile, much less *run* properly.

The only thing's left are I need to look into why Fog and Voxels aren't drawing properly. Those two don't prevent us from releasing it since the rendering aspects of those will be replaced quite quickly... but I want to spend a little more time looking them over as it would be nice to get it as close to fully functional as possible.

Beyond that it's just wrapping up the legalities and getting all the proper documentation in place.

Still WID, but I've got a special date in mind I'm aiming for. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

No, because SW doesn't have any sort of a scripting system or anything to build off of. I'll transfer most of the neat SW stuff (or at least as much as I can, which should be most of it) over to Duke, though.
