Anyone else watch this show? I have been hearing good things about it for some time, so decided to pick up season 1 on DVD. I've watched 5 or 6 episodes, and so far it's just ok. I find it's construct to be very much like Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the world of a young Clark Kent. Kryptonic meteor replaces the Hellmouth as the reason weird shit always happens in the area. Most of the episodes consist of some strange new human mutant terrorizing everyone in the area, while Clark and his school buddies, much like the Scooby gang in Buffy, work to figure out what's going on and how to stop it.
The writing so far isn't as good as Buffy was (well, maybe it's as good as Buffy season 1), and the characters look even less like high school students than Buffy's gang did, which is always irritating to me. For a town full of human mutations due to toxic meteors, it's amazing that all the teenagers have perfectly clear skin. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Anyway, I do think it's getting better, so am hoping by the time I get through season 1 I'll want to buy season 2. Decent TV programming is tough to find.
Can't say that i've watched loads of them, but i've enjoyed the ones that I have seen! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cool, thanks. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Ya, Lex Luther certainly seems like the most interesting character on the show so far, although I'm pretty sure I don't like him for the same reasons you do. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I find the "unrequited love" thing between Clark and Lana irritating already. You get the two of them together on screen with those goofy smiles and it looks like a toothpaste commercial. The guy playing Clark has entirely too many teeth.
The stories seem to be improving with each episode, but I wish the show had a slightly rougher edge to it. I don't know why I want to compare it to Buffy, but that was always one of the things I liked about that show. They weren't afraid to mix in a little sex and violence to keep things interesting. I guess that's always been the thing that made Superman kind of a dull character for me. He's just "too good".
Anyway, still watching...

meh, i don't like lex because he's a billionaire. that's just the bit of cream on top of it all http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif nah, first things first: the actor michael rosenbaum is a hottie! nothing left to say there. as for the character: i like this "been there - done that" attitude. he's seen it all and he knows it all. i'm impressed by intelligence and lex luthor comes accross as highly intelligent. also he's misunderstood, he's a victim, imho, and a far better person than clark kent! he's yearning for love like every human being is and that makes him so adorable... *sigh*

i'm not a fan of this clark-lana fling, too. i don't like the actors (kristin kreuk lacks emotional depth) and their "look but don't touch" game is still running in whatever season is currently being shown... 4? 5? i'm getting tired of it. all of the side characters are much more interesting. chloe and pete are quite entertaining and lex's constant struggle with his father is my only reason to watch the show anyway.

well, i think smallville is violent enough http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif it's not an action-based series but that's fine with me. i have to agree on the "too good" part, though. clark kent is just not my type of person. it feels like there's nothing underneath.

I didn't think you liked Lex because he was a billionaire. I knew it was a sex appeal thing (although I've always thought that money was pretty sexy stuff http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). I just meant that being a heterosexual male, my interest in him as a character was most likely for reasons different from yours. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif He has some pizazz, while Clark and Lana are a couple of cardboard cutouts. I can't believe they're still not doing the nasty in season 4??!!!!!!! I wish you hadn't told me that. Does Clark ever get laid? He should go after the little blonde chick. She's got personality at least.
As far as the violence goes, I guess what I meant was that I wanted a little more gratuitous violence, but I realize that doesn't really fit within the theme of the show. For some reason I started making comparisons between this show and Buffy from the time I first started watching it, and am having trouble not doing that. I guess I just have the same problem with Clark as I've always had with Superman. He's a goody-two shoes, which makes him pretty boring. So far, Lana is just as dull. They make a good couple I guess. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Really good show, I watch it every week!! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I wanna see a Bizarro Clark Kent suffer from teen angst. That'd be bitchin'. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
One of my favourite TV Shows mainly because I grew up on Superman, he was my childhood hero http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
So of course anything to do with Superman I instantly love. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Got all boxsets now and it's the only TV show that I actively collect on DVD.

I'm a superman fan too, so yeah I like the show!
I'm not up to date on it right now but I did watch through season 3 and the first few eps of 4.
As for Clark ever getting laid, I doubt it... Not till he marries Lois Lane anyway. Isn't that how it went down in the comics?
I thought if Superman had sex, he would blow a hole through her back like a shotgun, like Brodie from Mallrats said? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Smallville is great! I pretty much have the same reasons ADM gave. Superman is my favourite superhero.

As Nessus pointed out in the Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor in new Superman movie (http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=761048&an=0&page=1#761048) thread, you should read Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex (http://www.larryniven.org/stories/Man_of_Steel_Woman_of_Kleenex.htm ). http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's a great show and over the seasons Clark gets less goody two shoes. He actually seems to have a little more edge as time goes on. Lana is BORING, Lex kicks butt and I like Lois and Cloe they are both pretty cool. I Tivo it every week so I never really miss it.

actually it was much better last season, this season they made it all weird by adding whitches and stuff. I got sick of it cuz of that. They are totally going off the superman theme.

While I don't like Superman (because he is too good at everything, which completely removes the suspense) I think that shows like this only serve to exaggerate a loved character and even ruin him.
I'd rather have a mini-series with ten-or-so parts that focuses on the highlights of his life, rather than several seasons of short adventures. His everyday life seems to be a riveting sci-fi adventure. That's just too much.
They're just taking a famous character and making money out of him. Sure, the show is enjoyable for many people, but it isn't Superman to me. They've changed his past too much.

I'm enjoying it for the most part. I'm into season 3 now. The whole bit with Lex in the mental institution was kind of fun.
I find it incredibly irritating how often someone shoves Kryptonite in Clark's face making him sick. I mean, if you know you live in the only area in the world where there's an abundance of the one thing that can hurt you, why the hell don't you move? Very silly.
Other than that, the show is amusing. I enjoy the foreshadowing of Lex and Clark's future relationship. That's always fun. The couple of passing tributes to the Dukes of Hazzard were amusing as well. It's time a major character died though. They need to kill somebody off to let us know it can happen. Adds a lot of suspense to a series.

If they didn't change his past then it would be a pretty boring show. As far as I'm concerned, the changes they've made are minor enough not to affect what we know of him when he's Superman. Most people have difficultly getting past the whole Clark/Lex relationship, but without wanting to give too much away the strains are already showing.
At the end of the day, entertainment is the key aim of the programme. Sure, it isn't the traditional Superman we know and love, but it has fresh ideas which get the Superman ideology across with some originality. The only problem with the format is the predicatability of some of the episodes. So far, they seem to have found a solution to this in season 4. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So I just finished season 3. I said they needed to kill a major character, not kill everybody. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Looking forward to season 4 when it comes out on DVD.

It's definately a show I think has gotten better with time. I watch it every week and I still am into it. This season has gotten a tad odd but it's not a bad odd just a different one. Although I was not impressed with the season opener.

I didn't watch it at first, my wife did. She's nuts over Tom Welling. I caught the odd episode while she was watching it and found myself interested in the series. Everytime I would see an episode, something about it I liked.
I honestly don't know for sure what as the whole mutated teenager thing has been way overdone on that series, but it does have it's good points. I loved the episode with flash gordan in it, the only one that could outrun Clark, that was good. There have been a few like that, but they really went overboard.
I love Lex, he's a really good character. You like him, and sometimes I think he gets the raw end of the deal. They all seem to hate him for no good reason yet they come running to him for help and he is only too happy to give it. Of course, he does tend to taka advantage of those situations for his own good but. I think they are starting to portray him the way he should be, more manipulative. Perhaps his character needed to slowly transform in that direction. The actor that plays his is great too, they have shown him in some behind the scenes stuff and he is a real joker.
This season (the last one) will be the best I think. So far it is off to a great start.
As a side note: they had Superman on TV last night, what a difference time makes, special effects have come such a long way. The young Clark Kent in the movie looks SO dorky compared to Tom Welling.
Oh, you can have Lana, I prefer Lois. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I finished season 4 on DVD a few weeks back and thought it was really weak. Didn't enjoy it much. They spent most of the season writing as many reasons as they could to get the beautiful young stars out of their clothes, which was pretty hokey. Lots of EXTREMELY blatant product placement as well, which really irritates me.
Anyway, I thought the quality of the show really dropped off in season 4. Hopefully it will improve in season 5.
Never seen it, but I've heard of it.

Now that Lex is turning evil it's getting better.

I hope so. The whole "Lana the witch" angle was just weak. One super-powered character per show is enough. I think the problem they have is that Superman is basically a pretty dull character to work with, because nothing can hurt him. There's only so many ways you can introduce Kryptonite into the story without it seeming hokey.
Why the hell would they stay living in that place when it's the only place that has those friggin' meteor rocks anyway?
