That clip is a one-off. Every other episode of Rainbow was normal clean fun. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Zippy was my favourite character.

This is old, and was never broadcast on kids TV.
I for one grew up watching Geoffrey, George, Zippy and Bungle, not to mention Rod, Jane and Freddy.
Whats amazing is how Geoffrey et al managed to pull that off with a straight face.
for old times sake (you got me going now):
"Up above the streets and houses, Rainbow climbing high, Everyone can see it smiling, Over the sky, Paint the whole world with a rainboooooooooooooooooow!"

Just thought people might actually like to know... for restitution...
This episode WAS actually shown on the air. My mum remembers watching this very episode with me when I was younger.

You lie! Why would you lie, you lying liar?!?!?
That was a spoof episode they made for an award show - it's also much, much shorter than a real episode http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I've seen another forum about this, and several people seem to think they actually did see it once, which just goes to show what time can do to the memory... maybe they saw the clip on TV Offal and got mixed up?
And BTW, the Captain Pugwash thing is an urban legend http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You LIE, you snake!!!!!! Unless one of the ITV channels made a huge mistake and showed their specially-filmed rude edition, of course... but I still say you're just remembering one aspect that may have happened in a real edition of the show, and may slipped past the censors.
From an interview with Geoffrey Hayes here (http://www.btinternet.com/~acbarrett/ghi.html):
Andrew: The Christmas tape that Thames produced, the naughty Rainbow which has been featured on TV Offal where Victor Lewis-Smith said it was the "unscreened pilot."
Geoffrey: Victor Lewis-Smith or someone else…
Andrew: Graham Norton?
Geoffrey: You just reminded me, that’s right, yes. The VT department of each ITV company, every Christmas had a competition to enter all the outtakes from their particular companies programme out put, and see which ones were the funniest. But ours wasn’t an outtake, we specially did it. It was specially scripted and we did it and I never saw it! We did it and Thames won it, but what they actually won, I don’t know. But I never saw the video. I can’t remember much about it except for Zippy with a banana.
One thing's for certain: no way in Hell was this accidental, and nor did any of the participants not realise how rude it was http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
And just in case people wonder, the musical trio were Rod Jane & Roger at this point in Rainbow history (Roger was, I think, Rod's brother). Unfortunately, almost everyone on the Intarweb is only old enough to remember Rod Jane & Freddy (who replaced Roger), and so assume it must be them, even though Roger looks nothing like Freddy http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!!
This was aired in the late 80's right before Being gay mean't homosexual instead of 'nice and happy'.
The whole thing about them playing with each others balls was meant to be an exercise on sharing. Same with the twangers... it was the name given to that stupid toy where you have the plastic V that was on a pole with the plastic ball in the bottom of the V. You would flip it around and it would make that clacking sound. (Girls might know what I mean).
This sadly enough was co-incidence that it all just mean this sort of stuff... and back in the 80's - talk was a lot more innocent. Back then if you said something was hot... you'd think there was something wrong with it.
This was aired. It may not have been aired in England maybe?? But it was definately aired in Scotland.

You lie worse than Jeffrey Archer http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hhg.gif How could it have been shown in the late 1980s if it features Rod Jane and Roger, when Freddy replaced Roger circa 1983? HAH! I've caught you out, you filthy liar!
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if there were occasionally rude-seeming bits in there, either because some things can't avoid sounding rude, or because they wanted to test the censors. There's a classic clip where Zippy and George seem to be kissing each other on each cheek, but they're actually looking past each other in terror... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I THOUGHT IT WAS THE LATE 80's.... I said that because I remember seeing it in the late 80's.... when I was 5 or 6. I just assumed it was the late 80's.
It was aired in Scotland. That is TRUE!!!

They must seriously be putting something in the water in Scotland http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Could it have been a prank by one of the Scottish ITV companies? Or a mixed-up tape? Because it was definitely made as a spoof for their award show... Geoffrey said so, and you wouldn't want to diss him, he's the clever one! If they really did show it during children's TV, there'd be hell to pay - no way did they intend that innocently!
Anyway, why do only mad people on the Internet remember it being on TV? Is this like how people "remember" Captain Pugwash featuring Seaman Stains, Master Bates and Roger the Cabin Boy (which was proven to be false, and the paper which published the claim got sued for it, clicky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Pugwash#Urban_Myth))?
No-one on TV shows has ever said it was actually shown in the normal Rainbow slot, and on TV Offal when they showed a clip they said it was the "unaired pilot"... hmm, was there really a full half-hour show there? It does look like it's been cut in a couple of places, but I thought that was where the video quality was too poor to show (note how it breaks down a couple of times in the MPEG).
Bottom line: it's funny as hell, and anyone who says they saw it on TV is a mad Scotsman http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Aren't all Scots mad? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hhg.gif Joking aside, though, are you really serious that you and your mum saw this exact episode, and not just one a bit like it? That's a pretty impressive memory... I'll ask my grandmother if she remembers watching it with me, though I imagine her answer will be inconclusive http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The second she saw whoever it was opening the banana, she said:
This is the one with the twangers and everyone playing with themselves (not what you might be thinking off), she went on about how everyone just assumed they were talking about friendly kids playing and sharing with each other... Not what we thought of it.
She used to watch it with me when I was really small and she has a pretty impressive memory.

Hmm... either she saw the clip on TV Offal and that's what she was referring to, or else they made the rude spoof after they'd finished making a real episode of the show, and some elements in that episode inspired them... does she remember Zippy being on the verge of saying "four-skin"? Maybe in the original episode it was all perfectly innocent, but while filming they thought "hmm, one-skin, two-skin... that's an idea, let's make a dirty version!" And the bit with the twangers wrote itself http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
