Are you implying Age of Boredome 3 it's the inherent king of RTS based on SCREENS !!??!!?

Oblivion first, now this, there's no hope left for gaming, the graphic whores have took complete control...

While I certainly plan to buy EE2 and AOE3, I really believe the severely limited scope of AOE3 will put off several people.

Looks like it is only single player.

Ivan, plan on getting EE2 at least or Swat 4. I am getting both of those, as well as AOE3.

Too bad about the LAN thing. I've always hated RTS games in Single Player mode. I only can have any fun playing with real people.

I played the demo... but really, what does this game have over the first one? Why did they even bother making a sequel?

I agree. I actually only play RTS games as Co-op: Me and my pals against an AI team.

Not sure if they will release a multiplayer demo. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I managed to get in a game on Sunday morning, but got raped quickly. See below:

Someone asked why to make a sequel:

To fix the AI. the AI Cheats. It needs no resources.

The interface has changed a little bit. Didn't even have time to look at half of it, because like the first one, the enemy AI came and attacked/rushed me. I had to go shopping and gladly quit the game. I had just set up a barracks/army away from the attacked area. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

I had a scout patroling early on and he came across the enemy soldiers on several occaisions, but was not attacked. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

I honestly have not seen if the AI has improved or not. I sure as hell hope it does. I need to give the demo another try, although I can assure you the AI for this RTS series and others need a big improvement. I really hope they will deliver.

I still remember the first time I watched the AI play. I recorded and observed a game of me and an AI versus 2 other AI on another team. They had sent out all 6 peasants out in the most remote locations to gather wood, food, gold, etc. I noticed that they had a magical supply of resources to constantly churn out peasants/soldiers as they create soldier after soldier. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif They made buildings when they shouldn't have had any wood. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif Hilarious.

I don't understand at all why a company would program AI to go outside the rules of the game.

But from what i can tell (and remember from the first game) it seems exactly the same, with some minor graphical upgrades.

The same thing happened to me. Was trying to explore the game a little, but got trounced after 7 minutes 65 seconds (well actually i quit when it was obvious i couldn't hold out).
The AI's tactic seems to be - find enemy base. Move near enemy base. Declare war and fight until dead.

I asked why bother making a sequel when it is exactly the same as the original..... you've helped make my point by showing that the AI is as dumb as ever....

It doesn't really warrant paying out the same amount of cash for a new game does it? I wonder if this will be in the below £20 category of games?

I think at the time for many of the games/developers, they lack the effectiveness of creating a challenging AI within the rules to begin with. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

The biggest problem with their AI from EE1 was that the AI was so predicatable at each skill level, other than the fact that they cheated. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif A few of my pals and I started playing the game again last year, but gave up because it was just the same song and dance each time.

It would be nice if the AI would be a little more random. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

D, I still would buy it. There are still many improvements over the first one that are supposed to be in. I really hope they did redo the AI. One of the more important things was for them to make the game friendly to "n00bs" or casual players, with the auto-resource management. I believe that was implemented in other RTS games, like AOM maybe.

If they were to redesign EE1 with the improvements they wanted and the graphics were still the same as EE1, I would definitely be ok with it. I suppose that's what they have technically done, although I believe it uses a different engine now.

The AI seems to almost always cheat in RTS games. In Warcraft2, Starcraft and I think Warcraft 3 I'd notice when playing coop with my friend against the computer that they'd never search for us. They seemed to make a bunch of guys and send them in a beeline right to our base. They showed up way to fast to have had to actually check bases for us.

Wamplet
03-01-2005, 05:16 PM
^ Oh yeah, definitely the same bee-line problem in EE1.

I remember playing Warcraft 2 with that. Hehe.

Fog of War doesn't exist for them. As a general rule, we disable Fog of War, since the AI doesn't have to deal with it. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Initially, they sort of explore in EE1, group up, and then attack. The same thing seemed to happen in EE2 though. They claim the Fog of War applies now, but I can't verify that without disabling it and watching them. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

EDIT:

Also, for a hilarious tactic in EE1, we normally play Team Islands, set up tons of towers and eventually get the entire coastline blocked with towers, except for 3 or 4 open tiles. Then we build a wonder or 5 and all of the AI sends their ships to their doom. LOL Main it's kinda pathetic. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif That's why it got boring though. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Ivan

When you play custom against the computer, in Starcraft, they cheat as hell. I've notied they build slightly faster than we normally do. And as you said, they don't search for us.

What are the requirements for EE2? I don't need a 3600 computer right?

There will be a multi-player demo shortly. Try it out; the performance is light years further along.

Just got done playing another game of this (EE2 sp demo), fun game! I played against the default two computer players, the one computer allied with me, which really caught me off guard! I accepted, helped him defeat the second computer player while I built some towers inside his base and placed a huge number of troops in his (allies) base. When we defeated the other computer player it automatically dissolved our alliance and my towers and troops went to work, obliterating his base, heheheh... all his base are belong to me! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Great game, might have to buy this one.

Personally I think the AI should of been smart enough to warn you to retreat and upon failing to do that it should of dissolved your treaty and attacked your invading troops. Just how i'de program it though because that seems TOO easy.

But... I was helping him defend his base! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

it's not my fault he dissolved the alliance. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good game anyhow, I love the territories, building bridges etc... very nice.

Perhaps at a higher difficulty level the computer AI reacts differently? I'll have to check this out.

I have a feeling their AI improvement claims are quite false. I played on Normal, Easy, and Easiest. The only thing I really noticed was the harder you set it, the faster and more numerous they attack you.

One thing that really pissed me off was that I can set up a wall of towers, yet the AI will continuously send soldiers and cannon folk through to get slaughtered. I was expecting the AI to be smart enough to think "Hmm, the last 50 soldiers just got raped by 3 towers. Maybe I should attack those, instead of making a bee-line to his Town center."

I think their AI improvements were more functional, in lines of the new diplomacy features, which I honestly have not really bothered with. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif If an AI wants to be my pal, fine. In the end, I always betray them though, so it only prolongs their death. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I certainly wouldn't mind having an AI ally set up a ton of trebuchets in my town and then declare war. That would be hilarious. Sadly, it doesn't look like they play like humans, as the developers keep saying. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I was expecting them to make a huge improvement over the AI and how it plays the game, since they have been going on about it. So far, from the demo, I have just seen the same old tactic that plagues nearly all RTS games: "rush and make a bee-line to the Town center."

I think the game has fallen quite short of my expectations in the AI department, but I am still going to get the game.

Yeah, I still await an RTS that has decent AI.

I think the worst offender has to be Cossacks... that game rebuilds instantly when you're not looking. It actually keeps track of where you are looking and builds at normal speeds while you're watching, if you look away (scroll away) it will finish whatever it is building instantly. Often without anyone around to do the actual building! heheh... that pissed me off... I hate a game that cheats.

Has anyone seen an RTS with decent AI? I know I haven't.
