I just got a newsletter from this mod:
all i can say: AWESOME http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif
a piece of what looks like concept art to me:
http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/concept23.htm
it will be genuinely cool to play this mod, because it offers an art direction differing quite a bit from Doom 3, new environments:
http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/shot42.htm
some cool corridor:
http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/shot44.htm
and last but not least: you HAVE to see this, it's a lot different frol Doom 3 and quake 4!
http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/shot43.htm
and also some screenshots of a quake 4 mod maede by someone from the recall to hell team:

Nothing in those screens .... sorry. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
Edit:- But hey, I'm currently working on the lowpoly of Larry. It's 92% done already. Hopefully we are gonna release some screenshots once the lowpoly is modelled, UV mapped and then normal mapped. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
BTW, Larry rings any bell? Doom3 Alpha video? corridor with moving lights? I don't think this creature is so easy to forget. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

There's some sort of poll going on in "Doom3Files" (http://doom3.filefront.com/)
I'd be really glad if you could vote for Recall to Hell in it. We are already in the 2nd place tieing up with "Dawn of the Dead" mod. But a little help from you guys might push us up to "the one and only 2nd place holder".
Please do this for us guys. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif
Speaking of the progress of the mod:
Well for the last 3 months we were suffering a bottleneck in our workflow as we were having major problems exporting animations from Maya to Doom3. Hence no custom characters were being put in-game. Recently (yesterday to be precise) 2 members of our team (Vile and Avalanche) worked hard and sorted out the problem. So you can kinda say I'm in a very good mood (despite of having exams on 31st). So you can expect some serious media updates very soon.
And trust me guys, for the last 3 days, the RTH guys (including me ofcourse) are on a spree and kinda enjoying the wind of "way-to-success". Nvermind, that's my personal feeling.
See ya guys later. And next time expect a media update instead. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yeah, as of right now there are three mods for Doom 3 I'm waiting for.
RTH, the Dark Mod, and Hexen: Edges of Chaos.
IMO all three look to be completely awesome, and they just can't come quick enough. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Also, waiting for Black Mesa Source and They Hunger: Lost Souls.

Trust me but we are still busy for the next news update which is gonna be really cool n' big. That's all I'm gonna say for now. But to tell you the truth the things that are mainly going on right now are more towards making stuff in our mod more "functional" and therefore less went into "vast game building spree". Afterall pretty graphics are no good if it doesn't play good. Right? :)

The way was long and tiring until, at last, we saw the first twitches of our creations. This twitching has now become complete animation sets, which we will not keep to ourselves. Together with some new localities the whole team has gone to great lengths to spur on the progress.
Some interesting and impressive details about it, you can get here within the
> exclusive interview on moddb.com (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/interview.htm)
But don't just read my words, take a look for yourselves:

http://recalltohell.d3files.com/thumbnails/shot46.jpg (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/shot46.htm)
Our mapper, Zizz, has been working pretty hard to make our Jupiter facility as uncomfortable and eerie as possible for your mind to accept. An old high-security prison complex constructed on a meteorite above Jupiter itself has yet to be explored, with fluctuations in gravity and cosmic anomalies to keep you occupied. New cybernetic lifeforms, made of blood and steel, are being created here. Created by assimilation of the steel structures and biological tissue of its former inmates in a maelstrom of uncontrolled, accelerating evolution.

These creatures, deemed Flesh-Crawlers, are blind but have a very different mode of sight: they can sense electricity. Every unfamiliar source of electricity grabs their attention. Any new moving source is met with frightening aggression. You'd better deactivate any tool or weapon that uses electricity. Even those with digital GUIs or the emanations of a flashlight can make you an easy prey.
http://recalltohell.d3files.com/thumbnails/model19.jpg (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/model19.htm)
Our pickaxe, being nonelectric, is completely safe. You'll find it deep within the mining tunnels and may use it as a weapon without hesitation. Three other weapons are also close to completion. Among them the Nailgun, which you can use to rain down rivets upon your enemies with tremendous speed. Next, the Oxidation Grenades, can disintegrate metallic enemies in seconds. The third is the Environmental Gun, which absorbs the particles of the environment, amplifies their characteristics, and puts them back out. So it becomes a flamethrower in hot areas, and a sort of Icegun in cold areas.

The Dark Beast skillfully uses its abilities to extinguish all electrical machinery, creating a large area of total darkness around itself. Psyschokiller presents his solid piece of work with the oppressive Moon level, full of mine tunnels deep beneath the surface. Valuable ores are mined here by the PTMI and processed on-site, until they are transported to Earth. Through the various caves and mining tools, the mine generates a distinctive atmosphere, with swirling fog, dark shafts, and dim lamps contributing to your feelings of unease.
http://recalltohell.d3files.com/thumbnails/shot59.jpg (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/shot59.htm)
These are Shadows. They have no fixed form and are always lingering in deep darkness. They will show their dreadful visage only when they are directly in front of you, grotesquely crawling towards you with terrible scratching noises, attacking from the ground or ceiling.
Extending the basic Doom3 engine by a couple of effects, our Coders Spuzz, Junkguy and Satan have created a unique look for RtH, suitable for a modern game. For example the atmospheric play of light and shadows is emphasized by simulated HDR and subtle LensFlare effects. Water surfaces cast realistic reflections on walls and ceilings. Details are highlighted by an exclusive version of Junkguy's Parallax Mapping. But special attention should be paid to our RtH-Bloom-Sharpening Shader, which adds a nice soft Bloom effect to the environment, but at the same time sharpens the overall display, including textures and objects. The mixture of both looks quite nice in-game and improves the whole optical experience by a level.
Of course we are also still in search of animators, modelers, coders [who are able to get our fully modelled, animated and textured monsters/weapons ingame] and shader artists [for nice water-, rain-, fog- and multiple weapon effects]. So in the following months we will be able to mod at least as efficiently as up to now. If you are interested, please post in the forum as usual.

Seriously this is hot stuff and destined to be mod of the year in any contest!

****ing shit that's ****ing awesome, holly **** (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/shot49.htm). The censored words best describe how much I'm impressed with the mod. Looks (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/shot51.htm) better (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/images/screens/shot55.htm) than anything else I've seen in the Doom 3 engine to date.

Well the only thing I can say is that we tried our best to squeeze the most out of the engine. And the same way we will continue our work till the mod is complete. :)
I'm feeling even better coz in the sad days when all people switched their D3 projects over to the Quake4, we didn't. We chose to stick to Doom3 and improve there only ....... coz we respect our roots ........ being a Doom3 mod team. :D
Also if you guys will notice in the interview, we have lastly named our team "Gridlock" ..... yeah just gridlock. :woot:

Sayantan, two questions.
Are you the level designer?
No, I'm not. I'm employed in the team as a "Technical Modeler and Texture Artist". Previously I was also the "Modeling Team Lead", but I resigned being the lead coz I became very busy with studies and it was great deal of responsibility to do my work as well as track all the modelers and their progress.:)
Does the Doom 3 engine limit the number of polygons in characters? That pinky-esque monster you guys got going is better looking than some Quake 4 models, even.
As me and many other D3 engine supporters in this forum said in all the engine based threads before that "there's really no such restrictions in polycount that the D3 engine holds". But it's just that you have to reach an optimal goal where your polycount is lower as well as the detail on the model looks satisfactory. The detailed look of a model also depends on how good of a normal mapping and specular mapping job along with the diffuse map you have done. So the monster you see there is really not that detailed in polys as you might think from the screenshot.

Thanks for the fuel guys. We need it. :D
BTW, I wanted to add something here, just to make sure. None of the screenshots you see is photoshopped at all, except for placing the logo. All of them are absolutely what you'll see in-game when you'll play it. If you're wondering about the slightest softness in the screenshots, it's due to our unique bloom shader.

This is what our modleader Legion_X had to say:-
Originally posted by legion_x
We would like to invite all current Doom³ modifications [DarkMod, SapphireScar, Facing Hell, Dungeon Doom, and all others] to a little pilot project:
Over the course of the past months every modteam has developed special strong points and expertise in certain areas, but they might not be as experienced or simply understaffed in others. Furthermore, some problems might occur in handling the rather sensitive and nitpicky Doom³ engine. For instance, it took us quite a while of experimentation to satisfactorily integrate models into our maps. We think it possible, that you might be facing similar or different problems, which might already have been solved by other teams. It means a loss of precious time if each modteam has to reinvite the wheel for itself and try around on their own for months.
We would like to offer a place, in which exclusively active Doom³ modders will meet and discuss among themselves, give tips and maybe lend a hand here and there. Each one brings in his strengths and in the end, everyone will benfit from it. We want to point out, that each modification will persist uniquely and independently with all their individual traits and innovative ideas. But we think it’s important that all the active modifications on Doom³ support and assist each other in such a way.
For this purpose, we have created a small forum – from Doom³ modders for modders. Away from the public, it’s also possible to discuss some more or less closed concerns, support or sometimes directly lend a hand with some tasks. Like this all teams can move a little closer together and help each other – for less time consuming experimentation, more efficient work, direct tips and support and a faster mod release.
So we would like to invite all members and modders of Doom³ modifications [DarkMod, SapphireScar, Facing Hell, Dungeon Doom, and all others] to this small forum:
Just please drop a short line here below in this thread, telling at which modification you're currently working. We will give you access to the forum asap.

Just 'act' it out. Our first and foremost priority is how good the person can act with his voice. His recording equipment would be the 2nd and thereafter his voice quality would be the third priority.

It's still WID, but nothing like it's gonna take a reaaally loooong time. You can count on that. ;)
The main time that'll be taken later on is IMO on the tuning of all these "huge" amount of stuff we already have made to play the music in sync to one another ..... like the London Symphony orchestra. :)

Mindif I ask how long play-time in the mod is supposed to last? Is it going to be a relativley short playtime, or a longer than average time? If you don't know, could you throw a number out that's in the ball park?

No idea, but we can discuss WID. :D
@ Neptune:
It's very speculative about the playing time right now, so I dont want to throw any numbers. But all I can say is that by no means it's gonna be less than ROE, maybe slightly more than that, we shall see WID. :)

Here's the media update prepared exclusively for the ModDB MOTY event. Here's what our team lead Chris "Legion_X" Donner had to say about it:-

Moddd.com annually nominates the best modifications. If you like our presentation and, of course, our mod itself, vote for Recall to Hell with a single click here (http://mods.moddb.com/4168/reca-to-he/). Thank you!
We have once more collected all the facts and features around Recall to Hell and put them in a nutshell on a presentation-site. Together with the impressive images of our gallery, you can use this to once again fully inform yourself about our mod, its story, enemies, weapons, other features and our motives: Presentation-Site (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/presentation_eng.htm)
Something is stirring between our brushes. During the last 2 months the team has gotten 4 eerie creatures and 3 corresponding weapons into the mod, complete with texture, animations and code. So this time we can gladly give you an account of our in-game experiences:

Legion_x: „In addition to some well known weapons Recall to Hell will also feature a large number of unusual but effective mining tools. I find the Riveter particularly impressive in the game. It fires small but extremely hard steel-rivets. I carefully move through the tunnels accompanied by a buzzing sound. I can literally nail smaller enemies directly to the next wall with it. Bigger adversaries are painfully covered by a steel-rain, which is cynically complemented by the dull weapon sounds.”
Elusive: „It’s quite a fascinating experience to see the creatures which were created in time-consuming work come to life and to be able to face them with a loaded weapon. Especially the dark beast is one of the nastiest creatures in my opinion, because it has the ability to extinguish all electrical light in the vicinity, leaving me in ghastly darkness. Now I have to rely on my hearing, since it is essential to locate and destroy the monster. The only chance lies with the relative slowness of the creature, which leaves me with the necessary time to find out in which of the countless dark corners of the Rth-Universe it might be hiding and from which direction it might attack… And even in the moment of maximal concentration I have to watch out, in order not to be struck by one of the scorching electric attacks the Darkbeast is able to send out. Because the unexpected shock I will feel, which will make me flinch in my chair, is but the faintest of the consequences of such a devastating attack…”
Legion_x: „We are currently making very good progress and are working quick and efficient in the most fields by now. Previously we often had some minor problems with the Doom³Engine and its peculiarities, which have cost us a lot of time, nerves and even some motivated members. However, by now a much smaller but therefore better harmonized and more reliable core-team has formed out of the initially almost unmanageable 35 modders. Of course that shouldn’t obscure the fact that we are still in need of some talented and motivated people, especially in the fields of mapping and coding, in order to keep the workflow as satisfactory.”
For more information visit our modsite (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/)!
So please please please 3DR forum dwellers, vote for us! :D

Christ, for a mod you guys have some good stuff there. My only criticism would be that the art direction is very similar to what we've already seen in Doom 3, Prey and Quake 4. You have your own style by the looks of that 5th shot and the outdoor stuff, but at the same time the whole metallic corridor look doesn't excite me much. :(
I love the weapons and monsters.

Trying to change the look would be a suicidal attempt for us. Actually we're "on" for the same creepy design aesthetics that iD did yet changing the 'way' you had played Doom3. Other than that it's not really difficult to change the look as you've already seen with many other mods. :)

I understand that, but my only problem is that I've kind of "done it all before" so to speak. It's not a fault of your mod really. I'm sure once I play it I'll change my tune since it appears to be much more than what Doom 3 was.
I'd be saying the same thing if another retail space shooter was released. In general I guess I'm just bored with the setting (unless it is used creatively like in System Shock 2)

Voted for RtH and Black Mesa Source.
Both awesome mods with a bunch of really talented people at work!
I did the same thing yesterday. Both mods look like professional job.
Still, BMS is my favorite, just because of the fact I can run HL2 decently, unlike Doom 3 :(

I think the problem with Doom 3 mods is that none of them set reasonable goals. Thats why most of them are cancelled or are still dragging on 3 years later.
Not trying to be negative or anything I hope this mod comes to completion and is succesfull, but if some of these mods would have made "episodes" or used a bit more vanilla assets rather than trying to make an entirely new game we'd have a ton more Doom 3 mods to play (way back when we still had Doom3 installed).

Agreed, I loved it until the last update; they redesigned one of the levels for the worse and added bad cutscenes, their original weapons were kinda crappy too.

I'll copy his post here too for you guys:
I remembered about it today after almost 2 years of not checking the site.
I have to admit I didn't even remember the name of the mod, I had to search for "total conversion doom3 mod" on google, to find some places from where I found other places on which I found links to your site.
What I must say is that I am a person that knows allot about gaming industry, most actually call me a pioneer in the gaming industry especially in the fps industry and I really must say your screens still even now in 2008 look better than maps I have seen in engines like for ex unreal 3 engine.
The maps and 3d models look more than ok, I wonder how the hell are you still not working for a huge ass game company?
What i must urge you guys to do is to stop with the new ideas and get the old ones implemented and working and release this mod in 2008 or early 2009 because if you stall it much longer, it won't matter if you are gona release it since it will look too outdated and nobody will care anymore.
People already don't care about doom3 graphics since 2006 so try to understand that you are in danger of transforming all that gigantic work into a pile of old dusty stuff that nobody will care about.
My professional advice would be to stop the story of your mod at the point where you are right now and do your best to RELEASE it as it is ASAP.
If people like it, you can continue your ideas in a new mod on quake wars engine or on unreal 3 engine so you can have something on the current graphics.
I really want you guys to trust me and believe me I do not want you guys to see the huge failure that could happen to this project if you don't release it soon.
The failure of a mod is one thing but you guys are real talented people that shouldn't have to know what epic failure means.
The team behind this mod has seen lots of talented people but sadly the organisation behind it is very poor.Such talent should not be spend so much time only on one mod.
Such talents should be hired in the gaming industry to produce much more than what has been produced on this mod in such a long time.
From what I've seen in your screens everything looks over detailed, the details are exagerated on everything, it impressed me in 2005 , and it impresses me now the same after I've seen crysis and unreal 3 engine games.
Do what is right guys, perfectionism must have it's boundaries or else your project will never see the light of day.
You already have too much details, those levels look infinitely better than what ID did in doom3, it is time to stop detailing and starting to actually animate and bind the puzzle.
The guy that created e1m1 made this post.
I hope this was a good motivation for you guys to continue and I might just need some of you guys like what I see when this mod is complete

Interesting advice from Romero. Sadly, it seems to be the fate of all overly ambitious mod projects, or perhaps mod projects in general. Mod makers don't have the same constraints placed on them as someone working for a company, and "perfection at all costs" becomes the rule because that's how they think things should be done. Don't give an inch. Don't ever compromise. Just create the best damn product humanly possible.
And so it ends up that the team starts to lose enthusiasm, fans drift away, and if the mod isn't abandoned, it's released to so little fanfare that it quickly fades away into obscurity.
I suppose if there's anybody who knows the heartache that comes from over promising and under delivering, it's Romero.

The worst part of it is - the longer they wait, the smaller the audience. Sure a few of us will play and say "*** yeah!" but had they released it closer to Doom 3 it could have been a real hit. Doom 3 is almost irrelevant these days. It would take one hell of a mod to make people turn their heads.
Phait

02-11-2008, 01:37 PM
True, but a sequel isn't quite the same as user-made content. Look at Turok - it's selling well on a name that few even remember.
It depends on the game's popularity. A new HL2 mod would be played by many, even if it's only "okay". A Doom 3 mod though? I like the game, but let's face it - it's fallen off the radar.
Mountain Man
02-11-2008, 01:53 PM
Same idea with DNF.
Eh, not really. Yes, DNF is technically a sequel, but it's still a full-blown stand-alone game that will live or die on its own merits. Not to mention I'm sure 3D Realms will have one hell of a marketing campaign in place to combat consumer complacency.
A mod, on the other hand, is very much tied to the game it's created for, and as Romero pointed out, Doom 3 is all but irrelevant these days, and this Recall to Hell mod won't get much marketing beyond a smattering of worth-of-mouth recommendations among die-hard Doom 3 fans. For that matter, I don't think even a commercial Doom 3 add-on produced by id themselves would find much interest among consumers these days.

I actually haven't seen that guy in a while, though, so maybe he won't be back? Or maybe he's just taking a break from the forum or something.
You can always try posting at the official forums, but that thing is hardly ever used anymore. This is so sad, too. heck, even a few months ago when they did their lasst update it made everyone really interested in it again, so it's not as though no one cares.
I've been considering teaching myself how to make maps using the doom 3 editor simply to help these guys out, but map making is so foreign to me now, the last level I made was for Quake 3 a LONG time ago.... and it was crap. Before that, the only editors I ran was Wolfenstein 3D and the Duke 3d Build Engine, and that engine (i've heard) is one of the easiest editors around.
bah, whatever. I'll keep you guys posted if anything comes up, because I'm just as interested as anyone.

Reca|| to He|| has been mentioned here (http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=21277) by ZizZ^:
The mod i did those canceled enviroments for is Recall To Hell. A very promising mod by team Grid Lock being developed for several years now. Sadly enough the team has been having difficulties finishing the damn thing. Now it isnt very much a level problem, there's tons of great done level content. It's more the things that make them fun to play like gameplay mechanics, items, weapons, monsters (AI) etc... Alot of wich we have but, also alot unfinished. We realized we where to ambitious and decided to divide the mod into episodes. Now i'm sure those episodes will be released sooner or later. The mod is not dead! But it IS idling atm. I'm sure once the whole team can pick up that good old motivation again things will get out eventually. there's so much been done that may and shall not be wasted!

That's Pretty much it. I'm not too active anymore because 3drealms forum is blocked in my office.
Now let's look at my condition. After completing a so-so game I'm working on currently, I'm going back home leaving the company, as it's hopeless to work on a 2D game being a 3D artist for a year and then expect good games from that company furthur on. Mis-management sucks. I'll be going back home to develop my portfolio furthur on. Contributing more for RTH would be a nice way to do so. But the effort to get it done also has to come from the other part of the world you see. Let's see where it goes. :)

Let's admit the following:-
- Gamedev in 2008 needs quite much more manpower(IMO thrice) than that was needed 3/4 years back.
- We all who works in the industry have to work really hard to get our daily bread and pay for our rent. The last time I finished playing a game completely was (I forgot which game) before I got the job.
Now at this kind of a stage obviously we have to losen up our effort towards any mod/TC we were going through previously. Real Life Sucks. Trust me guys, anyday we'd love to finish the project ASAP. But it's just that the situation also has to be like that. :(

As many of you might know the forum (http://recalltohell.d3files.com/wbb2/) has been HACKED for a long time now. Yesterday, I had a brief talk with Yatta, and he somehow dug up my curiosity to get at least something out of the whole thing OUT.
Hence today I, along with Zizz (who has almost left mapping and a pro dancer now) started digging a lot about how to trick the stupid hacked thing. After tinkering with for quite some time, I discovered something. The idiot hacker only altered the main index page. All the internal forum data is still there intact. damn
maybe seclude each maps and release
If I even would have the time to setup my old rig and sort the stuff ... but I'm too busy and RTH is a closed chapter for me.
I might sound weird in that case but I stopped to care about it. There are more important things to do for me which affect the future more than this
So there you have it. Elusive was our Lead Mapper. Nobody even has the enthusiasm nor interest to continue the project. Since there's no money involved, enthusiasm itself was the main driving force.
Add to that 2 years passed just like that. We've become more mature to look for a living rather than complete this mod.

It's been four years since I started this thread and still nothing.
I tried to convince the leader of the project to release the files numerous times over ICQ but he seems reluctant.
Recall to Hell has gone to hell and it's never coming back.

So there you have it. Elusive was our Lead Mapper. Nobody even has the enthusiasm nor interest to continue the project. Since there's no money involved, enthusiasm itself was the main driving force.
That's really too bad, this is why mod teams should release regularly. As the community rallying behind the project encourages those working on it to continue.
I hope that what is completed with the project will be salvaged, pulled together and released.

Well, the project is dead... seems like it is time to move on and drop all hopes of playing it. :(

Check the last few pages of this thread guys (http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=18072).
As for me I'm busy with a Crysis map with somebody.

Not completely, but at least something out of it.
