As you may or may not know, a while ago, some guys from these forums decided to organise and make their own game. As it stands now that game is being thought up and drawn up. Ideas, concept scetches are comming in every once in a while, but it seems that it's not enough yet. We need some more people, people with skills in moddeling or programming or just being artistic, or even just guys who always wanted to make their own Game.

So if you're interrested in joining, or just checking out the enviroment, go here: http://www.aaronmnash.com/3drforums

You'll get further information when you're in our project, as well as our private forum, where only the Game designers get access to... the bowels where we hide our deepest secrects http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

not a lot has been confirmed at this point, but the following things are Highly likely to remain throughout the development process:

* It's gonna be a FPS
* It's gonna have some RPG elements in it
* The story will have influence on the way you play the game
* It's gonna be slightly apocalyptic
* It will involve an alien race that attacks us!

on the private boards we have an idea for a story, some gameplay ideas, concept art of enemies/weapons and such and some more things that you're gonna have to find out about yourself...

So sign up or just check out the place!

And after reading the disclaimer you agree too each time when coming to these forums, you will realize that is not a good idea if this is a serious project.

The game is being discussed in another forum...
We are just trying to get help from the people around here (Read: '3DR Game Project' because 3DR fans made it...) http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Or are you refering to something else..?! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You should base the game ON the forums.

Backstory: David Hasselholf and Michael Jackson accidentally have sex causing a rift in the space/time continuim. A focused string of reality zaps the 3DR board server catapulting it's electronic content into a parallel dimension.

Level Ideas

Noobville

Here you must protect newbies from angry, jaded 3DR forumers who are sick of answering the same 6 questions over and over again.

And so forth.

You can build each level around a specific forum and tie it into pop culture references. Of course the final boss would be Joe. Oh well, perhaps it's too abstract.

Not at all...

Only the part where Joe is featuring in the game, we want a nice looking game, Joe's face would ruin all that... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

play nice kids http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

any ideas you feel like posting are supposed to be given at the other forums... for legal reasons!

and we already have a sort-of idea for what the game'll be about... might change though, but I think a game about the 3DR forums might not be interresting enough for anyone outside this circle...

Engine: Written from scratch... at least that's the current initiative http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

hence we need some more people, because the engine is a lot of work for just 1 man (DudeMiester in this case)

i know nothing in terms of engine programming, or programming in general, but if the editor is usable i can map with it. hopefully

Why? There are enough great open source game engines out there? You could, for example, use the Quake 3 Engine (it's release is 'bout time) and heavily improve it...or use the Genesis3D (http://www.genesis3d.com/) engine, or the Irrlicht (http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/) engine, or the engine Blender comes with. Why reinvent the wheel?

You may also work extensively and exhaustive on the concept and the story etc. so that 'til you're done with that part the Doom3 engine is open source. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

To gain some experience on building a game from scratch?

I'd love to help out but sadly I have no talent. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I can map alittle and maybe help out with textures? How big is the project team?

(Oh, and I can help out with stories and plotlines. Feature ideas, etc.)

Current confirmed (active) team members: 3

Current enlistment pending: 2

but feel free to sign up at the boards, we invent challenges for people there to see what they can do, based on that they're either accepted or denied (hasn't happened to date) as part of the team http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

so give it a shot, all of you!

I'd offer some help but currently my Photoshop skills aren't exactly 1337 and I can't map for 3D engines very well, not even Quake. If a simple 3D map editor is made- as in you don't have to freakin' hold down shift or control to drag or select something!- I could put in some effort. Consider me practically useless in my stage of life.

By the way, what name will you guys use? Both for the game and for the group.

Rider
03-16-2005, 06:44 AM
we currently have 1 story under discussion, if we where to go with that, it's probably going to be something along the lines of "Son of Earth"

ofcourse with all the new people signing up we might as well choose an entirely different plot, and thus a different name.

As for the group, that hasn't even been discussed yet... I guess it's time to make another topic then http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What are you talking about ?

The Quake 3 engine souce code is not released yet.

unless we find an open-source engine that blows all of us away, and does exactly what we'd want it to do, we'll concider it http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you can get some money together, Torque and the Torque Shader Engine doesn't sound too bad, and it's really really cheap compared to other engines.

Of course of the free engines there's OGRE, Tenabrae 2, Irriliect, Crystal Space, etc..

Better yet, here's a gigantic list!
http://www.devmaster.net/engines/

btw, if anyone wants to question the realism precomputed lighting can add to a static scene, then look at some of ArtyShock's demos. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I'm not really working on anything at all. I thought I told you that months ago. I will keep you posted if I make anything interesting, but don't count on me. I'm a lazy *****, an ashamedly lazy *****. I thought that was clear. Oh well...

Actually it's not so much me forgetting or being lazy, rather me not having the time.

that's pretty much accurate http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif We have an idea, some art but the big all-covering plan needs to be defined more clearly before we can do any 'real' stuff...

so since DudeMiester has explained how lazy he is (don't feel bad, I know what you mean http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif) we'll also need an actual lead programmer...

By the traffic this is generating... I'm pretty much convinced that this project is finally going somewhere again http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The plan for the what the game is going to be? Or the plan for how you're gonna organize the team? If you think someone has been working on tech for months then says that he's not working on anything and not to count on him, and you have to find out from a public forum post... sounds like you need a communication plan http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm not trying to put anyone down or anything. It's just that we get this kind of stuff in school (project management andwhatnot), for me it's interesting to see how projects such as these go. So I like reading about your project http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ah well. Rider, my speciality isnt textures anyways. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Just scrape the idea of having me onboard; the only other thing I can do right now is make music (inwhich case im pretty damn sure MIDIs are useless) and advertise/procreate with other people.

just got a question, How good of a programmer do I need to be to join. I mean what should I be able to do on my own in order to be quialified to help you guys out. I mean I know win32, OpenGl, DirectX, C/C++ im just not sure what you guys are looking for.

Rider

well with that kind of skillz I think most people already on the project would be thrilled to see you join, including me http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

IMO we should start to concider an open-source engine, so it would probably depend on how well you'd be able to handle that.

again, refer to our forums because most people on the project go there!

The story was posted on our public boards, as well as a first sketch of the main character.

maybe this'll help some of the people who thought about joining us, and maybe create some more interrest as well.

also

thoughts have come up to use an open-source engine. More information and linkage on the forums.
