View Full Version : From Dusk Till Dawn: Coolest movie ever? ;)

I know opinion on this one is divided. Some people are on board until the horror aspect kicks in, and then they hate the film with a passion. I happen to love the whole thing, back to front, and think it's Robert Rodriguez's best film to date.
What are people's takes here?

I liked the first one, although it was like two different movies occupying the same space. The sequels were unbelievably bad.

Ya, I guess it wasn't fair of me to diss all of the sequels, since I only watched less than half of the second one and none after that. That was more than enough.

The movie would have been much better sans Clooney (with stupid tattoos to boot). Stick James Woods in there and then we are talking classic maybe.
I thought James Woods was gay in that one vamp flick he did.
Anyways, I really enjoyed Dusk till Dawn.

Tarentino has reached his pinnacle and is slowly trickling down the toilet drain, he aquires the rights to these great martial arts movies and puts his face all over the cover, I've got at least 10 old kung fu flicks where tarentino does commentary, or interviews himself in part of the special features with some gimped haircut, because he releases these movies edited to hell for american audiences? Bah, Kill Bill was just tarentinos tribute to himself, I am bored of him. I liked it when he was subtle with his thoughts, now he's just blurting them out.

Actually I didn't care for that movie either, but I still think Wood's would have fit the character that they made Clooney play better...

No, From Dusk Till Dawn is not a good movie. That doesn't mean it's not somewhat entertaining. And to say it's Richard Rodriguez's best flick isn't saying too much either, even if it's not true. Sin City looks like it might be pretty good, though.

yeah it was a nice flick, but i wouldn't go as far as calling it the coolest movie ever. there were others.

Agreed. There are none hotter in Hollywood than Salma Hayek. You should see her in the music video included on the DVD for this movie.
As a consolation, I was born a man, and I think you and I have about an equal chance of ever getting in her pants. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well, I put the winking smiley in the subject line so people would know I'm not being one hundred percent serious. I do think it's an awesome flick, but I don't have any big argument for why it's the "coolest movie ever."
I liked George Clooney in this movie, but I do think James Woods might do an interesting job on the Seth role. To go off topic momentarily, yes, John Carpenter's Vampires (which starred James Woods) was pretty poor, but the book it's based on is much better. Check it out sometime if you haven't.
I feel like I have more of a personal stake in Robert Rodriguez, in that I really idolized him after reading his book [u]Rebel Without a Crew</u> and loved Mariachi, Desperado, his segment in Four Rooms, and From Dusk Till Dawn, but hated every movie he did after that. It was sorta like his brain melted or something, and he just lost it. Sin City might be good, I love the comics, but his all blue screen approach leaves me cold.
At any rate, I do agree Salma is very hot in this movie:

Love this movie...my parents rented it one day and I watched it before they did and was blown away. Nothing at all like I was expecting. The part when Tarantino imagines Juliette Lewis asking him the holy question makes me laugh everytime! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think it all depends on how you define "good". It's not Citizen Kane, but not everything has to be. If you found it entertaining, it was good for those two hours.

Anyway....I love that movie.....I agree with most everyone here that the first half was waaay better than the second.....although I do like the ending part that explains (kinda) what vampires were doing in mexico.
But this movie had plenty of classic, creative moments....The crotch gun....the shotgun cross....the super-soaker filled with holy water (which was later copied by that Tales from the Crypt movie).
It's not Robert Rodriguez's best work (Definately liked the El Mariachi movies better)....but it's a good popcorn movie.

Kevin Smith certainly has a knack for funny, colorful dialogue. But he can't direct for shit; even he admits it. It's just bizarre that he hasn't gotten much better as he's made more movies. Tarantino, on the other hand, is both a good writer and a fantastic visual stylist. Of course, none of the things in his flicks are original, but he makes a hell of a pastiche.
Damien_Azreal
03-14-2005, 01:18 PM
That's because Kevin's more interested in story telling. He admits he doesn't do very well with camera movement or style, and he doesn't really care. I think he said somethign once about watching certain moveis and just from the way the camera moves you could tell it was this guys movie. But when you watch Kevin's movies you can close your eyes and just listen and know it's a Kevin Smith film. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
To be honest I love Kevin's films, then Rodriguez and then Tarantino.
And at least Keivn is able to get his story across without fancy visuals. He is a true story teller. His comics are funny as hell to.

Smith hasn't really told a 'story' yet, so far as I know, except in the most cursory sense. I haven't seen his last one, so maybe that one did. But his films are famously about getting his snappy witty dialogue across. Story is secondary in his flicks, if not non-existant. Rodriguez I can usually stomach, because he has a certain visual panache, but there's no depth there. There's no depth with Tarantino usually, either, but at least he can usually pull together all the other elements to make a riveting motion picture.

The Titty Twister intro is classic.
Sex machine is funny.
Fred Williamson is the most awesome vampire ever.
The music is great, Tito & Tarantula.
And George Clooney is pretty much the coolest actor in hollywood. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The only way the distributer would release Hero to American theatres was to throw Quentin's name all over the promo material. He didn't want to be associated with the movie, but that was the only way it had a chance of becoming mainstream in America.

I soaked up every bit of From Dusk Until Dawn until they got to the horror part. It's not that I'm opposed to a giant shift in theme and story. No, I loved that.
The horror portion however just wasn't scary to me. Part of it was lighting and directing, but most of it was that their really wasn't a lot of time available to "build up" the bad guys and make them seem fearful.
I think it wound up being a bit too whimsical, when, if the movie had stuck with darker, more adult themes, it might have kept my attention more. Perhaps if they could have spent more time in the bar, trying to survive, it would have been better. Obviously, it's tough to have longer run times on movies like that though.
As for QT. I like what he's done for the most part. I loved Kill Bill Vol I. I couldnt' stand Vol. II. I found the fighting anti-climactic. The ending was a great idea, but they ruined the surprise at the end of Vol. I, and the dialogue was sub-par. Still, I always find there's plenty to discuss about his films. That alone is something most directors lack.
Smith is a strange bird, indeed. I enjoyed all of his movies, except Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (I loathe that one). But I can't help but think he could be doing more.

Part of what makes Dusk cool to me, is that it's not just a shift in genre when they get to the bar, but in tone and style as well. I don't think I'd have liked it as much if they tried to make the vampires scary. Part of the dynamic is that the situation is so absurd, but the characters are still real. That's my take.
Kate: Are you okay?
Seth: Peachy, Kate. The world's my oyster, except for the fact that I just rammed a wooden stake into my brother's heart because he turned into a vampire, even though I don't believe in vampires. Aside from that unfortunate business, everything's hunky-dory.

The coolest film ever is Dawn Of The Dead (1978). End of discussion.
But From Dusk Till Dawn is a very good movie, no doubt. I mean, how can a movie suck that features lots of splatter effects from KNB, actors that can actually act, jokes that are funny and Selma Hayek in a bikini?
