View Full Version : XBox or PS2?

I'm thinking of buying one of these sometime this year, because I hear you can play certain games on there that you can't play on a PC. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than upgrading a PC as well, and it would keep me entertained while I move into my own place sometime next year. Now Xbox has over 400 games, but coming from the review side of it, Xbox seems to be better.

Now I know someone is going to say wait until Xbox 2/PS3 comes out, but those are going to be $500 Canadian when they come out, and there won't be a lot of games for them anyways. Plus, it's always best to buy stuff that's been around for a while, because all the bugs have been ironed out.

So, which one would you pick? I only want answers from people who own either console, or both (if you do). If you don't own an XBox or PS2, then don't reply to this thread. I want experienced people here.

It all depends on what types of games you play.

RPG based games PS2 all the way, not only can you play your PS2 games but older PSX games on it adding millions of titles

FPS is more for Xbox, although I must say TS2 (Time splitters 2) is awesome for PS2 I wish freeRadical would make a PC port.

Racing games are also Xboxes and Ps2's strong point they both have very good games

Fighters PS2 wins hands down

so its not system is better, its mainly about what types of games do you play? myself owning a PS2 and getting a PSP on thusday http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I like PS2 because I am a RPG gamer

So if I've played games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat (for SNES) and Star Fox (for SNES), then an XBOX is for me. Those racing games are also good.

What kind of hardware would I need besides the XBOX and a controller? What would the average person buy? My TV supports the red/white/yellow cables as well as S-Video and component video. It's a Sony Wega 27". Could I hook up my Logitech Z-5300e speakers to this? It came with an adapter to allow you to hook your game console up to the speakers and have 5.1 THX surround sound.

If it came with a console adapter that's compatible with the Xbox (refer to the manual), then you should be fine. Otherwise you'll have to buy a 5.1 sound adapter for your Xbox. The TV you have should work fine with the Xbox, but if you want high res support (if it's an HDTV), you can get a high definition adapter seperately for your Xbox as well.

I'm no big console gamer, but if I were you I would go with the PS2

Okay, so XBOX it is. Now to figure out how much this is gonna cost me. I'd like to throw in a couple games or so.

PS--I have been looking at getting one of these for a while now. This decision wasn't made overnight http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Although I wouldn't consider it if the 'beast system' in your signature is at your disposal. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Xbox 2 is coming out in the fall, and PS3 early 2006, so I wouldn't bother with either of the current gen consoles.

Still,
I think if he budgeted around $240-$260, he could get the following:
1) Xbox ($150) .. comes w/ one S-controller
2) HDTV Xbox adapter ($25)
3) Games: * Halo, used $20
* Splinter Cell , used $20
* Crimson Skies, used $20
* BurnOut 3, used $30
* Project Gotham 1 and 2, used $20(?)

These are just a few sure bets...there's plenty more obviously. **PS: I do like the Time Splitters games also.

You sound just like my dad. Always trying to give me an excuse not to spend money. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I know my computer system is blazing fast (with the Raptor RAID and Radeon X800 Pro), but if I could play games like Mortal Kombat on there, then I wouldn't need an XBOX. I could keep my current system and save the cash.

I too would wait. I already own an XBOX and my housemate has a PS2 so we have the best of both worlds. At the moment the XBOX doesn't get a look in because all of my housemates are playing GTA: San Andreas. We do like playing 4 player Halo/Halo 2 on the XBOX though.

I don't think it is worth buying a current generation console at the moment, especially considering the fact that you have an excellent gaming PC. You'd be much better off saving your money at this point.

Well, since you've already made up your mind for a 'Box (w00t!), here are some suggestions:

Ninja Gaiden
Phantom Dust (If they brought it to Canada)
Burnout 3
Breakdown (HEAVILY UNDER-RATED!!!)

.

And their reviews (In order)

Does anyone have the ballpark specs of the XBOX 2? I heard it's using dual core CPUs and a PCI-E graphics card. Clarify this?

Roger
03-21-2005, 11:56 PM
Get both. Get the games for PS2 that are only available for PS2, but if a game has an XBox version, grab that, as it'll probably look and run better. Lag and a bad controller layout are my only complaints for a PS2. I so sorely wished R-Type Final had an XBox version because the lag it suffered was so tremendous.

I don't have that much money. Not really into RPGs anyways. Now lies the question of waiting for the new XBOX 2 or getting the original XBOX. You said this is coming out this year sometime. When will there be masses of games to choose from? Does this console have the ability to play XB1 games as well as XB2 games?

EDIT: According to this site (http://www.geeknewscentral.com/archives/003928.html). The XBOX 2 will feature a 3x 3 GHz PowerPC processors, 256 MB of RAM, 3x 1 MB of L2 cache, and a video card which is faster than my X800 Pro just to name a few. Now seriously though. I'm playing the odd game here. If that was my gaming system which I used all the time, then I could look into it, but this is way too powerful for what I need. It's like killing a fly with a bazooka.

DudeMiester

Correction:

Xbox2:

3 core PowerPC CPU with shared 1MB L2 chache, 256MB RAM, and ATI R500 vidcard (somewhere between next-gen and next-next-gen PC vid cards). Each PowerPC core can run 2 parallel threads (basically like Intel's HT). The harddrive will be an extra, although they probably will sell Xbox2's with it bundled but it'll cost more. Also, according to some Xbox 2 developers, MicroShaft is going to up the RAM to 512MB, so they can have a hope in hell of competeting with the PS3.

Quick question, not to hijack this thread but don't feel like starting a new console thread just for this:

OT:
Is Gamecube Platinum smaller than the original one? I just installed mine and can't help but wonder. The damn thing fits on my palm!

Jeff
03-22-2005, 12:50 PM
Okay, but I don't need something that powerful. I'm going to play this console, but not as much as my PC. For example, if I play games for 3-4 hours a day, then I might play this for an hour or two a day. Not going to need something that's that powerful, unless that was my main gaming system.

Just wondering... why do you want an xBox/PS2 whenever you have a decent computer? Seems like a waste of money to me.

Some games are only available to play on those consoles. The PC wasn't meant to play them. I'll have to think about it.

DudeMiester
03-22-2005, 01:55 PM
It'll cost about the same as the origional Xbox when it came out, so I don't see why you would even mention how powerful it is. That's a very good thing indeed that it's powerful. Then again the PS3 is more powerful, so if I got a console the PS3 would be it.

Jeff
03-22-2005, 05:45 PM
If I'm going to be casually using this, would it make sense to buy one? I've got a good solid gaming system as you can see, but I can't play games like Mortal Kombat and other FPSes which I would like to play on an XBOX. The previous point would make sense to buy one, but me having a solid gaming system would make me not want to buy it. Do a lot people who have good PC gaming systems also have consoles, because I've heard some of them do? Or would they just have the gaming system? I'm not trying to waste a thread here, but I'd like to know all the facts.

Then get the PS2 it has the most games and you can get a host of old PS1 games for next to nothing too..

Jeff
03-22-2005, 08:05 PM
That would be a PS2 not a PS3, because that is supposed to be better than the PS2? If XBOX has Mortal Kombat or other good FPSes, then PS2 should have it too. I'll have to check out their game list. I've got some other priorities now, but when the time comes I'll look into it.

Xbox isnt flooded with crappy games (leaving no room for good games on the shelf) Go w/ that, not PS2.

Jeff

I wish I could have created a poll so people could vote, but that option was disabled by Joe. It's a tight race. If I search it on Google, about 1/2 the people like XBOX and 1/2 like PS2. This makes it difficult.

There's more than enough specs, screenshots, gameplay videos, reviews and opinions around the net and probably on 3DR UBB alone for you to make up your own mind.

No, the xBox just has half a dozen decent games that are either coming to the PC, already on the PC, or on the PS2 http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Why? Cause it's the truth?

I won't be arsed to look at the released games lists, and the lists of upcoming releases.

But whoever does that will find a host of titles on the XBox that will never come out on PC and have inferior PS2 ports. And vice versa. It's not black and white, and boils down to personal preference.

That's why I wanted you to give it a break.

I want a PS2 when the prices drop, I want to get ahold of my alltime favorite Soul Calibur 2, the Tekken series, and a few other games exclusive to that system. I sold my XBOX because it was giving me many dirty disc errors and I just wasn't playing it enough to warrent keeping it, got 127 dollars for it, but I certainly do miss those fighting games.

For fighting games I play my DC now, regular games include SF alpha 3, Soul Calibur 1, capcom vs snk 2, rival schools... etc, you could get yourself a nice dreamcast for like 30 bucks, its definatly the king of fighting games on the console and still holds up to this day.

Soul Calibur 2 and the Tekken series aren't exclusive to PS2.
