Please don't turn this into a debate over which antivirus program is the best.

I've been using Norton anti-virus for a while now. My current subscription doesn't expire until July 14, 2005, and I use Liveupdate and perform full system virus scans regularly. I haven't had any problems with it, except:

All of a sudden today it's saying that my virus definitions are out of date and I need to run Liveupdate. So I ran Liveupdate, and it tells me my virus definitions are now up to date, but on the main Norton Antivirus menu, it still says my virus definitions are out of date. Restarting the computer and running Liveupdate again has had no effect.

It's ridiculous though, because it always does a little virus scan of a document whenever I open one up in Microsoft Word; but now it can't even do that, because it still says my virus definitions are out of date so it can't scan anything. So now I can't even look at freaking documents.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Try using another AV program to see whether you get the same sort of response from that, either AVG (from grisoft.com,) or avast (can't remember the webbie). It isn't inconceivable that you do have a virus, that is messing with your norton settings. Also, check on the Symantec site to be sure you have the latest build of their AV stuff. It's also not inconceivable that they've broken something with an update.
If you still see nothing untoward, then probably your best bet would be to uninstall/reinstall, and then let it update itself again and see what happens. I've noticed in the past that Symantec have a nasty habit of changing stuff to do with Liveupdate, quite often expecting you to reboot and update again after you have already done so.

Did Live Update hang or did your computer freeze at any point during the last update you got? If so, your definitions may be corrupt. This happend to me before on Norton 2000 and on 2004. I had to uninstall Norton and manually delete the definitions for anything to work right again and to get it to quit bugging me to update. Either way, I would reinstall Norton.

Go here and download them manually.

(then uninstall Norton and get McAfee... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

Download a free-subscription patch... but thats illegal.
You can always uninstall then reinstall Norton. It'll fix the problem, but you'll have to redownload all the updates again.

Also, just in case, check your system clock. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Another option, clean out your temp files.
It is a known issue in every version of Norton AV. Too many temp files give bad live update.

For temp files, go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\[your name here]\Local Settings\Temp\

Make sure you got permission to view hidden folders as well.
