Hey all, I'm creating a site with mods for various games among which Civilization 2, Duke Nukem 3D and Mortal Kombat 4. I wanted to decorate the site with some gif animations I'd rip directly from Build, but didn't know how.
I went to a forum on Dukeplanet and someone told me they knew how to rip sprites from Build, but they didn't want to tell me because they weren't sure about copyright violations.
I've been looking over this site for an e-mail addy for customer's service, no luck. Does anyone know such an address, or perhaps just whether or not it is legal to use the animated sprites on my site?

The issue of legality is up for debate, but I do know that 3D Realms will not give you permission to do it. You might want to consult a copyright attorney.

All you have to do is press the "Print Screen" Button on your keyboard when i Build,or any other game for that matter. smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Damn there are hundreds Duke3d websites displaying animated Duke sprites, having walkthrough with screenshots, Duke logos and so on.
Are they all illegal Joe?

Here too now.
I still do not understand what is so hard in sending an e-mail to 3D Realms asking for permission. It’s either yes provided ... or no. Or just read their policy (http://www.3drealms.com/policy/index.html) and the disclaimer in Duke's game package. And at planet Duke we were talking taking stuff from one game into the other!

Don't get me wrong, I didn't come here because people at PlanetDuke didn't want to tell me. I came to this site looking for some kind of e-mail service which I could consult about the legality of sprite ripping, and since I couldn't find it, I thought I might as well ask on the board.

First off, printscreen won't work in build. F12 does it. And secondly, you're better off using editart to grab sprites than build.

Look for the editart guide (it's in the online documents section).
Edit: or look for the link in my sig. d'oh.

The legallity is not the main issue - the main issue is how much animated GIFs like that SUCK.
Please, there are so many poor sites that seem to think a million funny animated GIFs from the game are going to make it better. It's a mistake.
And if I remember correctly your issue was not with using images for a website but in another game - which is definately a bad idea.

Unless they have written permission from us - technically, yes.
