On my mom's computer I had enabled the multiple users feature (don't know why. Probably when I didn't have a computer), but now since it's just her using it, how do I get rid of it. That screen that says "Please log into Microsoft Networking" even before the explorer program loads and the desktop can be seen. This can be referred to in Windows 2000/XP as the "login screen".

It is totally different, in 98 all you have to hit is esc. I havent used 98 in years but I do know that there is a way to remove it.

Easiest thing may be to install TweakUI (there should be a Windows 98/ME version, don't install the Windows 95 version), then set it to automatically log on with her name and password at boot.

If you still want to get rid of the network logon, rightclick "Neighborhood Network" (or whatever it's called), then select "Windows Logon" as the default logon. You'll probably have to reboot.

If you enabled user-specific Desktop, Start Menu, etc, you'll also have to turn that off, either in "Passwords" or "Users". If I remember correctly, that gets turned on in "Users", but gets turned off in "Passwords".

Once this is turned off, you'll have to search for "Desktop" and "Start Menu" folders (possibly under C:\Windows\Profiles" or similar) and make sure any stray files or Start Menu folders/shortcuts get moved back to the default "C:\Windows\Desktop" and "C:\Windows\Start Menu" locations.

If you're still having issues, you may want to search Windows 98 Help. If you don't find the answer there, you may also want to search the MS Knowledgebase.

If she's going to be the only user, you can also delete the C:\Windows\*.pwl files for other users, once everything else is all set. Once hers is the only *.pwl file, she can go in to "Passwords", blank out her password, then Windows should just boot straight to the desktop.

This article points to the Kids Plus add-on, but it's instructions will work fine to do what you want.
