View Full Version : Duke3D on WinXP and other assorted questions

I've recently joined this forum (for DNF discussion) - and seeing all the D3D discussion and how active some of the community still is after all these years, I'm craving some Duke and good ol' Build mapping (I have yet to get comfortable with any of those newfangled map editors like UE).

I'm running WinXP and I've tried installing the game to no avail. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif Now that the source code is out are there any fairly stable/reliable versions of the game, or any known ways to get D3D running on XP?

The assorted questions are as follows:

1. I only own D3D original and god knows where it's at now, but now that the Atomic source code (I beleive) is out could I aquire the full game including Atomic Edition online legally, or would I still have to own the game?

2. Are there any internet Dukematch finding progs out there(like gamespy, ASE, only for D3D) , or any in the works that you know of?

3. Is JonoF's port a standalone version of Duke, or does it require the original?

Sorry for the newbish questions, I'm new to the whole Duke community. I was a mere schoolboy that had yet to discover the wonders of the internet in Duke3d's heyday, and have recently found my way here. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'd appreciate any and all help getting Duke3d and Build to run, and hey, maybe I'll release some maps if I can get it working (and find my old maps, I had some real beauties, well as far as I remember them).

You need to own the CD. Try the Online store in the upper left of this page.

And you need the game to use any of the ports.

Try these.. http://hem.bredband.net/pa_duke/duke3d_hrp.htm
And.. http://www.eduke32.com/ http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It only requires the group-file from the origional, no other programs or files. You just copy the GRP file into the same directory as your JFDuke port and its ready to roll.

You have to own the game, the source code is only the functional part of the game. Static things like levels, textures, etc (aka the grp file) you need to take from your owned game. Not to worry, Duke 3D Atomic Edition shouldn't be costing much more than a couple of bucks these days. You just need to find it, or order it on-line somewhere.

I'm still waiting with my netplay gaming until the next Duke3D hires pack will be released. Containing a JFDuke with netcode. I believe there is something called DukesterX, but I'm not sure.

It requires the grp file from the original. Want more knowledge go to the Duke3D Source Code forum just above this one. In there you can find all about the ports, and there are many more knowledgable people about the ports and the different releases of it.

JonoF's port will also work with any version of Duke 3D: shareware, retail 1.3d, Atomic 1.5

You should be able to just use Windows Explorer to copy all the files from the CD to a folder on your hard drive, then replace the Setup, Duke3D.exe and Build.exe files with the ones from JonoF's port.

Even though its pretty obvious but not mentioned anywhere, when your using the port, there is no need to install any of the updates from 3DRealms, for example the 1.4 to 1.5 update or the Australian Nudity Restriction one.

Also, JFDuke is updated often, so its a good idea to visit his site on a monthly basis, or keep tabs on the Source Code forum, in case an update is released.

Further more, any technical problems; post your question, with proper details, in the Source Code forum.
