View Full Version : Thief: About damn time

Okay, Thief. You all know it and love it.

I didn't. *shock*

I've seen the game before, played it before, and going on the credibility of friends and reviews I decided to try and get into it. I failed miserably. Nothing about this game grabbed me at all, it was slow, clumsy, and the gameplay didn't feel satisfying.

Okay, forward about 4 years, I recently got back into System Shock 2 and fell in love all over again. I've played it through 4 times since I rediscovered it about a month ago (Which is more than I've EVER replayed a game since the SNES days), and was hungering for more of the same, so I thought I'd give Thief another chance.

I played for about 2 hours, and was so pitifully bored with the damn thing that I quit. A few days later, I uninstalled it.

Then, roughly about 20 minutes later, I reinstalled and FINALLY got hooked. It was such a relief, I knew it was a good game, I just had to find that final hook to keep me there. Finished it last night and enjoyed every minute of it (Except the return to the chapel, I either wasn't playing it right or the gameplay in this section was completly out of line with the rest of the game).

Now I'm considering delving into the sequels, but I have some queries.

First of all, what's changed? I know there are more abilities and the like, but I'm looking forwards to discovering them when I play them.

Are there any fundamental gameplay changes? In Thief 1, there were a few elements that grated on me a bit, namely the use of the USE key for both inventory and interaction (It really bugged me when I accidentally drank my last health potion when trying to press a button) the lack of a sneak button (Garret is a bloodly loud bastard) and a couple of other niggly things like the fairly subtle glow of interactive items and the seemingly pointless loot (Did this actually have any benefit? I thought it would allow you to buy more things, but unless I'm mistaken it didn't seem to).

The level layout also seemed a little haphazard at times. Sneaking puzzles went from good planning oppertunities to "Might as well run out screaming bloody murder" on a fairly regular basis. This may be my brutal impatience, however. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And final question: What else is out there like Thief and System Shock? I loved SS2 for its futuristic setting and being able to upgrade your character (Amongst a million other things) and I loved Thief for it's fantastic tale and for being one of the most unique experiences I've had in quite a while. I tried getting into System Shock 1, but it's gone past that 'It's old but I still like it' barrier, and not being able to redefine the keys just made it too frustrating to play (Unless anyone knows of some utility to change this).

These games have reimmersed me in the FPS genre after a fairly disappointing lineup over the past few years. What else have I missed?

The Thief series is one of my favorite of all times.

Thief 2 features a few differences. First, it has the greatest Thief level of all time. Rooftop to rooftop action that will keep you entranced for 2+ hours on that level, alone (assuming you fully explore).

The undead are not in attendance.

Sneaking, as I remember it, was in all of the games. It's a matter of moving slower. I'd browse the control options to be sure.

Thief 2 is basically more of a great thing with some nice refinements.

Thief 3 departs a bit more.

Now the "levels" are accessed from a city. So basically between your escapades you can roam the city and pick pocket its denizens. It's not as awesome as it sounds. Eventually it gets repetitive. But I like what they tried to accomplish with it, and hopefully, if there's a Thief 4, technology will allow them to expand on the idea.

The levels are a bit smaller in Thief 3. It was designed console-friendly. That didn't affect the controls much, but it did make it a bit more claustrophobic. I didn't mind at all really.

You also have some neat level design in this one as well. I remember the orphanage/asylum one being particularly interesting.

Thief 1-3 are all gems and there has been no shark jumping to speak of. I think I still consider Thief 2 my favorite though.

I've never played any of the Thief games, but I love games with stealth elements to them (NOLF 2). I think I was meant to be a ninja or something. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Which Thief game do folks here recommend?

I enjoyed Thief 2 more than Thief 1, solely because the levels were a little kinder to me. Less catacombish I think.

However, I really did like Thief 3 out of them all. The levels were a bit more "real" and I wasn't sloshing around in a dull cave most of the time fighting monsters that looked like they were created by Picaso. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Oh and to make the experience more enjoyable(regardless of which one you play in the series), I recommend playing it on the hardest level possible. I forget the names, but I think there were 3 levels. The hardest level requires you to find 90% loot and of course it has a miniquest or 3 in conjunction with the main quest for that level. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

After playing the Thief series the past year, I want to play System shock as well, but I can't find anywhere that sells it other than Ebay. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

You forgot other play tips...

Turn all of the lights out.
Turn up the sound. (Turn music off)
Crank the AC so it's a bit cold.
Fashion a rudimentary hood out of a short blanket or sweat shirt
Sneer a lot

^ Haha, I do almost all of those things. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ironically, it just goes to show that you can have a perfectly light/dark level and get a nice spooky feeling from it without needing a flashlight. I thought Thief 3's Asylum level was truly wonderful. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ah yes, the Shalebridge Cradle. The first time I went there I said I thought it was going to be a run in the park. But when Garrett said; "...the Shalebridge Cradle, this place even gives ME the creeps!" I felt my spine chilling. without a doubt the scariest level in the serie.

Shalebridge Cradle is quite possibly the scariest level ever created.

Thief 3 rules.

I never finished Thief 1 or 2 completely, as they grew boring on me like was said at the start of the thread, but I really enjoyed Thief 3. And yes the Cradle rocks for atmosphere. Although the haunted hotel level in Vampire Bloodlines rivals it pretty well for scariest level ever.

Give Thief 3 a try please. It was last years best game in my opinion. The level design is beyond superb, the atmosphere is fantastic, and all of the characters are so enjoyable. Plus, you have the opportunity to enjoy the game while the tech is still fresh. Jump on it!

Have you tried Deus Ex? If not, drop whatever you're doing right now, and go buy it. The first deus ex. Now.

Yeah, but I've gotta find me a copy of Thief 2 first! Some shops around here still sell it I think (Second hand).

Yeah, I used to love it. Tried picking it back up recently, but I didn't really get much enjoyment out of it, I'm really picking about gameplay integration and Deus Ex is fairly under-polished in that regard.
