View Full Version : Shadow Warrior Source Code Released!

Joe Siegler
04-01-2005, 09:10 AM
It's April 1st, so we have some news for you today. We've released the source code for Shadow Warrior!

Available now for download, the source code is being released under the GPL license - we still retain copyright on the game (plus we still sell Shadow Warrior). We've been asked many times to release this since our release of the Duke3D source two years ago, and we decided today was the day. You can check out the readme here (http://www.3drealms.com/stuff/swsource_readme.txt) before downloading the entire archive.

The folks reading this who aren't programmers probably won't have any interest in this release, but those who are programmers might want to check it out. A big thanks go out to all the Shadow Warrior fans around the world who have waited for this. We hope you enjoy it!

Download links:

Fileshack (http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=6625)
3D Gamers (http://www.3dgamers.com/games/shadowwarrior/downloads/)
Fileplanet (http://www.fileplanet.com/files/150000/151889.shtml)

Please remember that this is being released without any support from Apogee Software, Ltd or 3D Realms Entertainment. This is being provided as is. Having said that, we've set up this area on our web forums for folks to discuss the source code. We also have source code for Rise of the Triad & Duke Nukem 3D available, you can check those out here and here.

Not sure if its still his plan but. When discussing the new animation system he said he was making sure he would not make it to dependent on the duke gameplay code so it would be easy for him to port it over to sw.

I think its just a matter of time before someone makes a windows port with polymost.

Edit:
Realy curious about what that new game is and have been so since that interview with scott a little over a year ago.

Naturaly its the game the only thing we now about it is thats its done by a third party with 3drealms "producing" it like with max payne. It was mentioned in an interview with scott were he said it would be announced that year(2004).

Don't rmeber were it was or the exact quotes but since it was planed to be announced last year its only natural to expect it to be that game joe is talking about.

DNF is already known so unveiling it would be a wierd choise of words if you ask me. But I guess since it has never been shown you could still call it unveilling it.

When? He said that they had the engine etc complete, its just content production now.they had at [u]least</u> 2004, and the first 3 months of 2005. 9 moths alltogether. POP SOT took about 1 and a half years. The matrix game (Enter) was about 1 year. Games usually take about a year of production. If george wants 6 months pre release hype, it will begin around about June. till then they would have had approx 2 years of production, with about 6 months for removal of bugs. June, its gna be then. I've only tested it on Open Watcom 1.3 and did a compile right before the release as well as one directly after the release to verify it.

What are the exact errors you are getting? Have you copied any new files into the directory with SW.WPJ or are you just doing a first time compile? Do you have DOS 32 selected as a buildable environment?

JonoF did have a copy as well prior to release and was able to build it, though some minor things changed between what he saw and the final release so it's still possible something might have crept in. Can't really help without more information.

Edit: Did you make sure to extract the files maintaining the directory structure? There are some other versions of the exact same files in other directories, so if you don't maintain the directory structure you could be overwriting the modified "correct" files. You should have a "Source" directory and an "Extras" directory under where you unzipped the contents.

I wonder if there will be a port where they make Shadow Warrior all 3D. Like how there is already some 3D sprites in the game, well maybe some people might make them all 3D including the monsters. Try opening a DOS command window and running it from there instead of double clicking on it. That will allow you to see any error messages you might be getting that would prevent it from running. This will help show what might be going wrong.

This sounds like a dumb question, but gotta ask anyways... do you have the Shadow Warrior data in the same directory as the SW.EXE that was compiled? I've tested it with the 1.2 CD version and the 1.2 shareware version with no problems.

Dunno bud, not without you passing along what error messages you are getting, etc. If you disable sound completely via the setup.exe you should be able to run it from the command line without having to use VDMSound and see what error messages you are getting.

I also can forsee potential issues if you aren't using a clean install of Shadow Warrior since there aren't any guarantees it can deal with modified files at all. Then again, there wasn't much you could modify in SW. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The BSTUP.C file is included, which is what is needed to bring all the Shadow Warrior enhancements over to the build editor. Might take a little bit of time, but shouldn't be too bad once people start working on it.

Here's wht seems to be required to get your freshly compiled
version of sw.exe to run:

1. Download & install latest version of vdmsound.

2. Download & install the current 1.3 release version of
openwatcom. This is a must, older versions of openwatcom
& newer versions don't seem to work (beleive me, I tried).

3. Rerun the vdmsound wizard on your new sw.exe and
save everything.

It should run ok (cross fingers)...

I have no doubt that eventually, other compilers will be
able to be used (gcc, msvc6 & 7, etc), but for now, OW is it.
The guys at icculus.org are
REALLY making good time on this code! Can't wait to see

The Room-over-room code seems to be contained in the file ROOMS.C (and ROOMS.H). I think it may be possible to just copy the Room-over-room code over and get a Duke3D port with room-over-room. Don't know about sector-based veicals, yet, though

IIRC the way ROR works as has been seen fails in Polymost. It needs to be rewritten I think.

How exactlly does ROF work? Does it actually move all the sectors over the other sector?

I've seen Polymost running with RoR working perfectly, even with translucent surfaces between them like in Map01 where the pond with fish is located. It works great. I'm pretty sure Jonothan is just having to go ensure his work is up to date with the real release of the source. He helped track down a couple of bugs and looked over it to see if he could notice anything that might be missing that would affect everyone's ability to fully support writing port code for the game.

For those who are having audio stutters, after you compile
your sw.exe, run cli2nop on your executable:

cli2nop -p sw.exe

mine said '47 occurances'

the audio was a LOT smoother after that...

Glad to help! As I recall, the rott executable that was
compiled from the original source code had a similar
problem. Too bad this won't work on my hl2 stutters....

Exactly what Charlie said. I'm verifying my code is in line with what 3D Realms have just released, ported over the specific Build editor stuff for SW, and am doing some final testing before I put it all online. The release is a matter of hours away.

Not really sure what you're doing wrong. If you've got the IDE open, you should see a list of the .C files, .LIB files, and .OBJ files that are loaded by the project. If you can see that, go up to the menu row at the top and look for the word "Targets". Click that and you should be able to go down to the sixth option which should be "Make". Click that and it should compile all the code.

I just tried F4 as well, dunno why that's not working for you. When you install Open Watcom it puts a messload of programs in the start menu, so make 100% sure you're running the IDE.

Also make sure that when you installed you selected DOS 32 as a build environment, otherwise you won't be able to build the code properly (though I think it should have at least tried and errored out for you).
