Hard to explain, so here goes:

When I first started getting mp3s, I cared for only two things, basically: artist and title.

Now, however, with the increasing ability of mp3 players that use them... I find myself wanting the data for things like Date, Genre, Year Made, etc.

I've been using the Allmusic (http://www.allmusic.com/) site to slowly add information song-by-song, but its really slow going.

I know its not likely, but is there any program that'll search some database, and then update these things automagically?

I use Musicbrainz (http://www.musicbrainz.org/). Works great. My only complaint is that it can't rename files from your already tagged data.

There's always the CDDB....but that only works for CDs, I think.

MP3 Tag is a nice freeware program. You can change multiple tags on songs at once. For example, if you have several songs that belong to the same artist or album, you can highlight several files, right click and change just the album or artist field for several songs at once. It supports many formats besides MP3.

His problem isn't that he can't change them, I don't think. It's that he doesn't know the information, and wants the computer to look it up and add the tags by itself.

MP3 Tag has CDDB access. It can look up the names for you automatically, if you want.

Yes. MBTagger is the correct answer.
