Yikes. Was the premise of that game ever more exciting than the promise of the tech that accompanied it? I don't remember the prospect of running around as a Native American to be "the thing". I mean, we have Turok. I thought "the thing" was portal technology, et al.

I sincerely hope they aren't diverting one iota of resources away from DNF to make this game. DNF is what made 3DR, if anything should be made to wait Prey should. Nobody is waiting for that game. Everybody is waiting for DNF.

Why? That thread is located in the DNF forum 'cause everyone wants it to be that game. It's as likely to be the as yet unannouced title that was spoke of last year so this forum makes sense.

How about no. This has made an article on a reputable site, it deserves it's own thread and considering it's not DNF, it doesn't make sense to put it in a DNF forum thread.

Back to the topic on hand, I'm fairly curious as to what similarities this will have to the Prey of old besides the usage of the IP, as are most of you it seems. I think the portal technology could be used to yield some interesting results in creative hands. But considering the fact that it's been many years since that technology was in the works, and considering that this project has shifted to another developer, maybe they have something different in mind technology and concept wise. Hell, maybe it'll just be a straight shooter.

Does CNN have any relible source of that speculation? If it's true then the roumer 3-4 years ago at evil avatar was rigth (it wsa developed by Human Head with the Doom 3 engine).
Would be rather nice to hear what 3dRealms have to say about this.

If it is, why did you choose Human Head for to make Prey, was it becasue you liked what they did with rune and the Unreal engine (I remember you said you really liked Rune and what they did with Rune. Bur that was 4-5 years ago that your said that). So when Evilavatar said Prey might be developed at Human Head (some years ago) I right away thought what you've said about Human Head and it all made much more sence.

The game has probably been in development for a few years already and at that time there was no ue3 avalible to developers.

It looks like may will be interseting times for fps lovers. Seams like all the big ones (id, epic, 3dr) will be showing something. only one missing in the list is valve but I guess the may very well be showing something on e3 just havent heard about anything.

The first roumor of Prey, being developed at Human Head with Doom 3 tech, was around 2002 or something.

Found it in my Duke/article folder:

March 12, 2002 - Prey, its very name is the definition of vaporware, and is even perhaps responsible for a lot of the Duke Nukem nay saying. You see, Prey was to be 3D Realms' grand first-person shooting triumph. What it promised to sport in 1997 was a new engine with better than Unreal looks, Max Payne radiosity lighting, and Red Faction environmental interactivity.
It was only after sometime that the reality of lacking technology sunk in and Prey, along with its Turok reminiscent story of a Native American gone alien abductee superhero was axed. From then, DNF was put in full swing, and has still yet to arrive, leading conspiracy theorist gamers with way too much time on their hands to always expect the worst.
However, in 1999, 3D Realm's George Broussard made it abundantly clear that the title was still in some way, shape, or form being developed, but that it should not be expected anytime soon. Despite this, and all the other hype surrounding the title, it seemed Prey eventually wound up on the dreaded backburner (insert Prey falling prey pun here).
That was then... This is now.
Web rumor (as wonderfully reliable as it is) suggests the game has perhaps risen from the dead by the helping hand of Rune's own Human Head Studios. Further speculation cites the latest in Doom technology to be the likely power behind this prey's second wind.
All parties rumored to be involved are obviously tightlipped (the terribly sad norm in this industry). We'll be back with more details if further information arises substantiating or debunking this rumor.

I got a reply from the guy who wrote the CNN article and he said he doesn't reveal his sources when they request anonymity, which is fair enough I suppose. He assured me that he confirmed this on several fronts before running the story. He also said we'll hear more about it in the coming weeks and that Prey is going to be at E3.

I still have my doubts of course. If it is true then Joe would have been telling us fibs, which I don't think he'd do.

If the using the Doom 3 engine is true, I don't know how well the technology will turn out.

I'd feel just as apprehensive as if they were using UE3, Source or another engine, because I don't know how many modifications or issues they would have in adapting the engine. I don't know how much the Prey concept would have changed, but I would like to see at least some of the environmental interaction and the large outdoor areas seen/promised for Prey back in 1997, 1998. I want to see totally alien worlds/ships as the storyline hinted at, not a generic cookie-cutter game.

But, what if the mystery game is not Prey? Won't you be dissapointed? My advice is to not be fully set in your beliefs until official word comes from 3D Realms. Yes, we do have very prominent sources namely the CNN article but things are not always as they seem. Maybe the best advice is:

Why worry at this stage when it's not even officialy confirmed that there is going to a Prey coming at all?!

I don't like how people get into the technical side of things when the thing we are actually talking about isn't confirmed yet. It's kind of like talking about something that doesn't even exist. That's how I feel about it anyway. It's kinda boring.
