View Full Version : Sudden refresh rate weirdness...

Hi there. I just came home from school, moved mouse to get to the login screen of my comp and hey, noticed something was very wrong: the whole image was horizontally flattened, the sides were outside the drawing area (CRT) and there was this _extreme_ pincushion effect on the sides. I logged in and I couldn't see a thing from any side of the desktop. I tried twiddling with the monitor settings, reset the settings once just in case... nothing. Everytime I tried shrinking the image, it just barely did that and then zoomed up again. Rebooting didn't help, reinstalling monitor drivers didn't help and no one had used the computer today.

What weird I noticed is that once I set the refresh rate from the usual 85Hz to 75Hz, everything showed up fine again, no extra pincushion on the sides and stuff like that. Problems only when using 85Hz... now what's up with that? I want my eye-friendly refresh rate back!

Any ideas what might be causing this and how to fix it?

EDIT:
Another weird thing: I took a full-sized screeny of the desktop in the "weird mode" and this is what actually went to the clipboard... what the... Where's the rest of the screen?

It has been my experience that when a montor does that it is in its "final" stages. Ofcourse its final stages may last for years depending on how tolerable your eyes are to a lowering refresh rate.

Does the screen only look like that when the computer is coming out of hibernation or standby mode?

It started acting like that when I exit the screensaver. I also rebooted the computer and turned the monitor off and back on again with no luck.

I'm sorry but I'm with Inanimate.
The fix won't be cheap, so start looking for a new monitor.
Meanwhile, you can hit the monitor in the sides or the top with your fist. Start doing it gentle and hit with more strength until you get the image ok. Look for the side/part of the monitor where you need to hit with less strength to get the image well displayed. DO NOT ABUSE this method, and don't do it if you want to get it fixed.
