View Full Version : Stuck @ 640*480 at 16 colors / network problems :(

I have "recovered" an old computer, but he still works.
I installed win98 (because that and windows xp are the only windowses I own)

first problem: you can't change the resolution.
second problem: you can't choose for more than 16 colors (the other option is 2 colors http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

problem with the drivers? use the standard drivers that windows recommended me for my onboard graphics card (pci or something)

that's the most annoying problem at this moment, because I can't play doom 1 against my pentium 2.
you need 256 colors for doom or it won't start.
how come I can't choose for a 32bit colors, like should be?
and why can't I use a higher resolution (1024*768)
it worked in the past.

========================================

then there is another thing that stops me from playing doom, duke and half-life over LAN.
it can't connect with my pentium 2, running windows 2000.

I'll start the LAN-story from the beginning.

first, there were 2 computers on the LAN:
one running xp (p4), one running 2000 server edition (p2).
the p2 could easily browse the p4.
but the p4 couldn't get on the p2 without giving an username with password you use to logon on windows 2000, no problem so far, only a bit unpractical.

now we have a new computer in the LAN (the old recovered one)
both the p4 and p2 can browse the new computer.
but the new computer can only browse the p4.
because when trying to browse the p2, it asks for a password, [u]but it doesn't ask for an username</u>,
and none of the win2000 logon passwords work.
you can't specify an username because it does ONLY ask for a password.

one option would be to remove the "ask password" when trying to logon in the p2 via network (how to do that?).
or is there another option?

What kind of graphics card does this computer have?
Does this computer have more than 1 graphics adapter installed? Like an onboard, integrated card? Check your Device Manager to be sure.

just one display adapter
"standard PCI graphic adapter (VGA)"

it's an onboard graphics card I think

Ok, so this is probably a Dell or Gateway prebuilt computer, right? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm assuming you don't have your factory restore CD anymore but if you know the brand name and model number (i.e. Compaq Presario 7598), you should be able to download drivers from the vendor. Make sure you download the motherboard drivers as well as the graphics drivers. (And if you're using an integrated soundcard (SoundMax) get those drivers, too)

Integrated graphics cards (like the Intel i810) have pretty lousy DirectX/Direct3D support and you might still have framerate problems with certain games that need a missing Direct3D feature. You might want to get a cheap Voodoo 3 or Geforce 2 for $10-$15.

P.S. Don't forget to install DirectX.

I haven't even bothered, because you have to restart windows. do it yourself or something http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

but, nutwrench, I don't know what model and blabla is inside my computer.
it's not our computer, we received it yearsss ago from my father's previous work.
and they forgot to take their PC back as soon as my father left http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif or they just don't care about their "hyperfast" computer.
so I don't know what brand it is http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Try downloading Aida32. It should identify all the parts of the computer for you. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

like I said: standard PCI graphical adapter.
windows said the best is to install the drivers for "Standaard PCI grafische adapter (VGA)".
I did that, and I'm stuck on 16 colors and that low resolution.
I tried using super VGA driver instead, then I can change it to 1024*768 maximum, and maximum 16 bit colors, but then he says the driver is not compatible.

an interesting note: when starting up windows 98, the windows 98 logo (with the loading bar on the bottom) looks GREAT, more than 16 colors, that's for sure.

It doesn't look like Aida can identify the graphics adapter. "vga.drv" is just the default graphics driver. Windows uses this driver when it's in Safe Mode or when it can't find an installed graphics adapter.

Does your BIOS have a setting that lets you activate and deactivate the onboard graphics adapter? If it's currently disabled, that would explain why it doesn't show up in the Windows Device Manager.

And there's no brand name on the computer at all? Not even on the back?

If you can find a the model name (i.e. Presario, Pavillion) and a model number (i.e. 7598), I know that Compaq has driver packages that you can download. Look for a model name and numer either on the back of the computer or inside the case cover.

You'll probably be better off in the long run getting a cheap Voodoo 3 or GeForce 2 graphics card. Try to get the PCI slot version of the video card, rather than the AGP version. Even if your computer HAS an AGP slot, it probably won't work properly without the motherboard drivers.

of what? of the compaq computer? of the "gfx card"?
it isn't needed to buy a cheap card since the computer won't be used for gaming, except doom and half-life. the 530 mhz p3 can't run better games, that need a gfx card.
I better save money for a geforce 6600, or something http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif for my p4

You'll never see anything on that computer beyond 640x480x16 unless you can either find the graphics drivers for that computer or get a cheap graphics card.

Compaqs of that era usually had names like Presario, Pavillion and a 4 digit model number, which should be on the back of the computer or inside the case (on the inside of the cover). If that computer has a front panel that swings open, the model name and number might be there, too.

I don't have a copy of 98. Plus, it's not at all trivial to enable 2 color mode. It's a miracle it shows up for you by default.

thanks nutwrench, in Aida32 there is an option to forward you to the site where you have to download the drivers.
I have good resolution and colors now http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

but other problem... sound doesn't work.
I installed the drivers same way as the graphics drivers and it doesn't work.
it's some sort of dos program, but it only deinstalls the soundblastr or something, but doesn't install the new :s

Cerberus_e
04-10-2005, 10:18 AM
in the meantime have downloaded the drivers from another site because they didn't work on the intel site.
I regret it http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
now I get a bluescreen every time a sound has to play.
for example a "click" in explorer ===> bluescreen instead of hearing the sound.
that computer is running in safe mode now:(
I'm looking how to uninstall the driver

Cerberus_e
04-10-2005, 11:30 AM
another update http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I managed to remove the bad drivers.

still searching for good sound drivers.
the one listed @ intel doesn't work (it's an intel motherboard)

NutWrench
04-10-2005, 11:41 AM
Are you saying the sound is integrated, too?
Or is there a seperate, plug-in sound card?

Cerberus_e
04-10-2005, 11:48 AM
I think it's plugged on the motherboard (because why would the boss of my fathers previous work pay for good soundcards?)

that's not bad because I already have a gaming computer and I'm sitting behind it right now (no need to pay money for graphics and sound cards for a 500 mhz 128 mb ram machine, if I have a 2.59 ghz machine with 512 mb ram).

if the sound words I'm happy http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I'm going to try to download the appropriate sound drivers, listed qua processor instead of chipset.

NutWrench
04-10-2005, 12:05 PM
If you're trying to run a game in DOS-only, you probably need to initialize the legacy sound drivers to get sound to work. (I think the command was 'sndinit' or something.)

If you can't get the onboard sound to work, you can always get an old, soundblaster-compatable soundcard for a few bucks. Heck, you can buy a cheap NEW soundcard for less than $10. (make sure it's soundblaster-compatable and has legacy support)

Cerberus_e
04-10-2005, 12:30 PM
it has to be possible to work, because it worked in the past.
before the format HD

and it's not only in DOS the sound doesn't work, also in windows.

altough audio CD's work with the cd player utility in the bureau-accesoires http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif, but only with headphone

Cerberus_e
04-11-2005, 01:06 PM

now I only have that network problem, that I can't browse the shared folders of my p2 from my p3 http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif see first post

It's quite easy to enable the 2 color mode. Just use the default Windows video card driver.

Or use the method that is explained on this page. The website also has a screenshot:
http://toastytech.com/guis/misc2.html
I think that method works on every video card.

about yout network issue....
create an user-account on your win2000 pc with the same name you log on on the win98 pc. You need exactly the same account for both computers in order to browse the network shares on the w2k machine from your win98 pc.

e.g. if you log on as user xyz password 123 than you have to create an account xyz with password 123 on your windows 2000 computer to gain access to this machine from the one running windows 98.

when you boot, you go straight to the desktop instead of a logins creen.

It's definitely an Intel video card (look at the vendor ID - 8086).

Try running this - http://www.delphidude.com/software/vesa-id/files/vesa-id.zip - it might be able to tell you something more about the video card.
