I recently started learning how to use Unrealed2. User friendly my ass! It's ****ing confuing beyond belief! I still can't stretch or rotate brushes! It took me like 5 minutes to guess how to zoom in and out! I tried tutorials but the ones I got were poorly written and vague. I HAVE to learn to use it at some point as I plan to map extensively for DNF but it looks like it's not gonna be easy. images/icons/frown.gif

I assure you, modern level editing doesn't get any more easy.

Well, if you have any questions Bob, you can always ask them here. images/icons/smile.gif
Remember than Subtract brushes are for carving out usable player space and Add brushes are generally used within subtract brushes to fill space back in.

Bob, e-mail me at mblackwell50@hotmail.com and I'll send you some tutorials that REALLY helped me learn, and a small help file.'
Granted it's for UnrealEd 1.0 but everything still applies.
Also, it does suck, as does worldcraft (which is even more illogical). It's amazing how much work you have to do just to make simple rooms.

Yeah, Worldcraft sucks for making rooms - draw a cube, hollow it out. Difficult or what? images/icons/tongue.gif
UnrealEd though just strikes me as clunky - I can't imagine being able to do any precision mapping with it. Just big sodding cubes everywhere images/icons/wink.gif

LoL.. you also?
Being the BUILD die-hard, I made my 'trip' to
'UnrealEd2' last weekend..
I tried it before a few times, but got exactly
the same results.. (F*cking confusing, unable
to 'do' even the smallest thing ec)
I finally got the basics, and got me a pretty
fine map, but I still wonder if I prefer to go on
with it..
The 3D/2D switch in BUILD is spott-on, and you'll
NEVER have the same organised view in W.C or
U.E.
You'll go 'Err, what sector was I working with
again'!??!' all the time in those. Also
the way to view certain parts, makes you want to
cry.. I just want to move in my level with the
KEYPAD and edit things! Also, there's no real
kick in making certain things in U.E. When
you create an effect in BUILD that took you
about half an evening (this is becoming pretty
frequent lately for me) and it comes together
you'll go; 'Yeah! BUILD power! Old software sucks? My ***!! images/icons/grin.gif
Perhaps I SHOULD get that BUILD tattoo on my back images/icons/tongue.gif
EDIT: Fixed a few TIEPOOOS images/icons/tongue.gif

Yes it DOES suck. Why should I have to create a solid space just to create a negative space? It's illogical. Right there you have over 12 faces. With UnrealEd at least you don't have to worry about these things, it's much more intuitive (though still not as easy as build).
Like I said, if you have any UnrealEd questions, contact me:

Compile times in UnrealEd are incredible, too. Even the biggest Unreal map only take a minute or two to compile on a decent computer. The same Quake level would take days.

Update: I made a round room with a well, and pillars and some supports. It's not THAT hard, I still prefer Quoole for true3D editing. Anyways at least now I'm basically prepared to map for DNF.
Build rules!!! And it's FUN!

I tried it before, as with more programs but I just can't get the power from somewhere to get on with it because I just can't do it ;( And I don't want to get stucked for 3 years to another build-program to learn how to map for an other game again.

BUILD will probably be the easiest level editor ever. But I have a few tips on UnrealEd.
-When you make a new level, the blank space you see in the 3D view is solid. UnrealEd is based on the principle that you hollow out an area (Subtractor brush) and play in that.
-Have a seperate huge room that will never be accessed. This is used for making objects. You basically take the brushes, and make your shape (computer, chair, lamppost) by adding them in midair. Then, you create (NOT ADD OR SUBTRACT-JUST CREATE) a brush that totally envelops the shape, and click on "Intersect." It's below the "Add" button. What this does is it combines the brushes to make the shape one solid brush, instead of many pieces. You will see that the new created brush is one form. NOw, add this brush to your playing area. This makes a level faster.
-Use pillars and platforms wisely. These create challenges during gameplay and help preserve framerate.
Here's a link that will be very useful for some:
