Buahaha! That's great. I wished Doom3 had scred me like that - I guess I'm too game savvy for that, already http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That reminds me of playing Resident Evil 2 togehther with a guy who got scred equally easily as Mesh from the video. At that place where that licker comes crashing down from the skylight he litrally jumped up from his seat. Man - that was fun http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

they have 5 or 6 doom 3 videos, and 5 HL2 videos.
they're planning to do AvP2 videos too.
the hl2 videos aren't nearly as good as the doom 3 videos, because hl2 doesn't scare him. Ravenholm scares him a little bit, but not as much as doom 3.
the 5th video is hilarious though, not because he's scared but because he uses the combine as marionettes with his gravity gun http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I want them to do return to castle wolfenstein videos, because he says he uninstalled the game as soon as he reached the catacombs http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

the full version of clive barkers undying gets scarier as it goes on...i'm not easily scared by games either but there is something very unnerving about it...2 parts that stick out in my mind for absolutley making me shit my cecks are

<table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler">the bit where aaron chases you around the mansion and keeps wacking you with his chain...you can't kill him though because he's a ghost...until you go into the basement

one of the bosses where i think aaron is painting a painting of some hideous monster and you turn around and its THERE staring you in the face....that was one moment i truely jumped in ANY game</td></tr></table>

doom3 was more startling than anything...it didn't really disturb me much either...still a good game though

Wow. I wish I could have had as much fun with Doom 3 as that guy. By that point in the game, I found it too predictable to be scary.

Solefald

Undying was and still is the scariest game IMO, I did manage to finish it though.

Scariest parts for me were...

<table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler">When I was in this part of the mansion, and I'm walking through these dark corridors and I hear the claws of the Howlers come closer and closer. There was also the part where you walk towards a mirror and a Skarrow comes through it. I installed it a few years ago and met with a Howler, I quit the game and uninstalled it. I'm a coward yes http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif finished it once, but it would take extra balls to do it a second.</td></tr></table>

ID should use him for advertising Doom 3! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A few things to note:
- the environment scared Mesh as much as the actual enemies.
- As mesh showed, great shadows do impact gameplay.

I would love to see something in Doom 4(?) where some of the monsters spawn silently right behind you in places where you're required to stop for a moment (like at a computer console or door/locker keypads).

After spawning, the monster would not attack and would make NO SOUND AT ALL until you turned around (or it was clear that you could see him) http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cerberus_e
04-11-2005, 10:27 AM
a bit like in alpha labs 3, when you have to operate the cranes. there are some enemies spawning too then.
but they attack you even if your back is turned.

your idea is good, but only if you NEED to turn around, if you can just progress without looking back, the idea is not succesful

NutWrench
04-11-2005, 10:40 AM
I posted another idea earlier about having monsters spawn in areas that you had already passed though. They would spawn silently and would either wait at ambush points or follow you quietly. A monster in "sneak" mode would make footsteps only half as loud as a regular monster and he wouldn't roar or growl until you could see him. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Are those like, real 3D glasses, or like Tiger Electronics 3D glasses http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

85pHotpot
04-19-2005, 07:07 AM
What's Tiger Electronics? I use EDimensional 3D shutter glasses.

Nessus
04-26-2005, 09:03 AM
How are 3D glasses when youre only getting like 40 fps? That would be like 20 blinks a second per eye, sounds like you could see that.

DK2000
04-26-2005, 10:02 AM
Such glasses cut the refresh rate of your monitor into half, not the frames per second!
That's why (at least in the first days of such shutter glasses) the company (in my case elsa) said that you would need a monitor with at least 100Hz or better 120Hz at the resolution you wanna play.
Because cut in half this would mean a rate of 50/60Hz per eye. Lower numbers would cause headaches pretty fast and the eyes get really fast tired.
But it has nothing to do with the fps you have at any game. If you have a game running at 30fps and your monitor is set to 60Hz this will mean that it will still show its 60 pictures a second but picture # 1 and # 2 will show the same.Picture #3 and #4 will show the next frame and so on....
But dont forget I am talking here about CRT monitors not TFT!

Cerberus_e
04-26-2005, 11:49 AM
40 fps is good, what are you talking about?
I play doom 3 with 14 FPS and it's almost smooth.

Mountain Man
04-26-2005, 01:18 PM
14 FPS is smooth?

Cerberus_e
04-26-2005, 01:27 PM
like I said, almost http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
here and there you notice some slowdowns, but overall it looks continuous (the frames that follow each other up)

Nessus
04-26-2005, 02:18 PM
Yeah 40 is fine for the game, I was just wondering if it was too low for the glasses. Because of cpu limiting I drop into the teens at times.

85pHotpot
04-26-2005, 07:00 PM
There is an fps overhead for the glasses. Using the stereo drivers provided by Nvidia, there is generally a 20-30% drop in framerate. This means that to play the latest games in 3D, you need a good rig.

doom 3 and riddick are the only games with that low framerate, if you are a LITTLE BIT smart then you know those engines are the heaviest for a graphics card.
