View Full Version : Offline mode problem?

The latest Steam update has broken my offline mode. I am required to connect to the Internet in order to play any Valve game. Steam claims that there is no login information available in the window below, yet it has no problems whatsoever finding that missing information when it has an online connection.

Stuff I have tried:

1) Deleting the client.blob file. No effect. Steam updates itself, then refuses to start in offline mode.
2) Completely uninstalling Half-Life 2 and wiping the entire Valve directory on the hard drive (after backing up the gcf files. Downloaded Steam and reinstalled. Same problem.

There is a thread about this (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=273537&perpage=15&pagenumber=1) in the Steam forum's General section which is now in its 14 page after a week and a half. No Mods or Valve employees have posted in it or acknowledged that they're working on it.

Has anyone found a fix or received a reply about this?
Is there something you can add to the Steam shortcut that will make it default to offline mode first?

Uninstall steam and HL2. Play another game.

Seriously though, i have no idea. Steam updated fine for me. If i remember correctly, when you first start steam and you have no info, you can tell it to store your account info locally. Did you re-enable that after the update? Can you? I don't know.

The 'Don't save account info box is unchecked' If the problem were some weird file or configuration setting in my Valve directory, you'd think that a complete wipe of the game would have fixed that. I haven't changed any Steam settings.

Thanks, Corwin but I've decided to just uninstall HL2. It was fun while it lasted (six months) but I'm just fed up with Valve not giving a shit and having to put up with software on my computer that actively works against my interests.

Can't say I blame you. WTF is this 'install M$ loopback' rubbish. Why on earth can't Valve just get the damn thing running properly on their own fgs. Fwiw, that thread is now up to 17 pages and still going. The stupid thing is that every time another glitch happens, the fanbase will be gradually eroded.
It strikes me that while the theory of lots of little patches may be fine, having a longer time between an integrated patch for a number of things, would appear to give less likelihood of things getting stuffed up as often - certainly in Steams' case - due to the opportunity for better testing and implementation.
Generally speaking, I keep drivers etc. pretty much up to date. I'm so glad I've never bothered to do it with Steam. If I want to play HL2, I still can.
