Although maybe it is too early to get an anwer, I was wondering about music and sound in Prey. In my opinion, this is a very important and often underesitimated element that can really enhance a game experience greatly.

Particularly, I was wondering: what will sound and music be like and who will be producing it?

If we have a look at the ancient Prey FAQ (which can still be found here: http://www.3drealms.com/faq/preyfaq12.txt ), we read:

4.3 Who is creating the music for Prey?
----------------------------------------

The musical score for Prey will come from two different sources. Lee Jackson and KMFDM. CD Audio tracks will come with the registered version of Prey holding all of the music for the game.

Lee Jackson is the Sound and Music Director at Apogee software and will handle all of the sound effects in the game. Along with all of the sounds, Lee will also compose some of the music in the game.

Industrial Rock group KMFDM will compose the vast majority of the music in Prey, including the Prey Theme. KMFDM is a well known band that was approached by Paul Schuytema in 1997, and they agreed to making some original music for Prey.

There will be two types of music in Prey, highlight and level music. Highlight music is more complex, faster pace music. Level music will be heard throughout the game as more ambient sounding. Between 40 to 60 minutes of original music for the game will be created. As of mid-February, KMFDM has begun serious work on the Prey project. KMFDM plans only two projects in 1998: music for Prey and a new album.

Particularly interesting I find that it says that Lee Jackson does all the sounds and some of the music (who, of course, also works on DNF). Is he still in/in again?

SFX would probably be done by someone at Human head, but the music... is anyones guess

That FAQ is from 1998. We clearly need to remove it now.

True, but it's fun to read nevertheless. And even if you remove it, I'll still have a copy on my pc! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Seriously though, I remain quite interested in the music and sound of Prey.

Why couldn't you just put a disclaimer on top of it saying that it is totally out of date. You could keep it from nostalgic purposes.

Also, Lee Jackson isn't at 3DR anymore. Atleast that's what I read.

That is true. I think he quit the industry entirely.

I'm hoping the KMFDM soundtrack is kept in some way or another, being a fan of them and all.

If KMFDM still had music in the "new" Prey that would kick ass, however it's not something i'm really concerned about.

Heh. Yeah.

2.6 What are the System Requirements?
-------------------------------------

* 3D Realms has not announced any official requirements yet.

An estimation is:

} - Pentium 166 Processor or greater
} - 32MB RAM
} - Supported 3D Card
} - 28.8 Modem for TCP/IP Games

So the PC in my closet from 1997 will run it?

That would be me http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif I can't promise anything, but I'll try and see if we can get something posted in the coming months for you all to check out.

Welcome to your doom... I mean the boards, ED. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I found your website, and noticed that you did music for the Doom 3 soundtrack, that's cool. Can you answer any questions about what you're doing for Prey, or do we have to wait till after the PC Gamer unveiling? I wonder if you based the new soundtrack off the old stuff that was there, of if you restarted over from scratch?

Oh yeah, also, I like the avatar.

If I'm not misstaken Human Head was looking for a sound guy just a few month ago.
I thought of applying thou I'm from not from USA, thou I would do that just becasue HH is on of my favourite game developers (since I played Rune for the first time).
I remember this clearly becasue I talked to my girll friend about it. And I said somehting like:
(me)-"HH seaking for a sound guy I might send in my application"
(gf)- -"what is that?"
(me) -"one of my favorite game developers, and I think they even developing Prey that was canned in 99".

Hi Ed, nice to see see you around here.

Have a lot of fun producing kick-ass audio for Prey, and we'll be looking forward to hearing something of it!

That FAQ should be considered irrelevant. I need to remove it from the site.

Edit: That's been taken care of now.

the video represents sound in the game http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
very immersive if you ask me, then again, no one asked it me http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Allright, let me ask you:
What do you think about the sound in the game prey based upon what you have heard in the video?

http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I liked it though. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

very immersive IMO.

especially the second part of the movie, the first scene on the ship, when you are on the elevator, there seems to be a sound in the background (like a cross between machinery and an alien talking) that suddenly changes tone before you encounter the first enemy.
that's immersive http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I hope you know what sound I mean

the sound when you get on a wallwalk ("pooooowww"), and the sound when you move on a wallwalk (it's like a ventilation shaft), is also very cool.

I agree, it's all very fitting for the setting. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif And it sounds good as well. But I do hope there is music for boss fights. I love good music in boss figths. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
