Favorite Director(s) and Scriptwriter(s)

Influenced by the favorite actor thread obviously. Just curious who your favorite Director's and Scriptwriters are. These are the two most important elements to making a movie to me.

Anyway, same rules apply here. Your favorite director/scriptwriter, favorite movie they did, and how many movies you have of theirs.

Director: Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese
Movie: Kurosawa - Seven Samurai Scorsese - Raging Bull and Taxi Driver
owned: Kurosawa - 13, Scorsese - 12

scriptwriter: Andy Kaufman
Movie: He's done a bunch that I've seen. I'll have a final answer when I get home.
Owned: About 5.

This is a tough call, because there are directors who've done movies I like more, but they then do really awful movies, and I decided consistency of output would be my criteria for "favorite" in this instance.

Favorite writer(s): Michael Palin, Terry Jones, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and Eric Idle
Favorite film by them: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
# of Films owned: 4

Again, another tricky one. Plenty of great scripts, but in all those cases, the writers have also done awful movies too. The Pythons are perhaps better known as performers, but they really are writers first and foremost, and their level of quality was usually above par.

Honorable mentions: John Woo for directing (if only he hadn't left Hong Kong.)

John Hughes for writing (if only the eighties hadn't ended I guess.)
