View Full Version : Solved my Mozilla download delay problem!

If anyone remembers, I posted about a problem I was having with Mozilla a while back where it took on average, about 10 seconds for my downloads to actually start. This was a huge pain in the rear if I wanted to download several files in a row (like images, models etc...). Even small files, still take the same amount of time to actually start the download once a location was selected.
I realized what the problem was when I brought up the download manager, it had pretty much ALL the files I have ever downloaded listed in it! The file that held this history was 6 megs. It took about 30 seconds to remove EACH ENTRY in this file, which was ridiculous so I deleted the entire file, which of course cleared the download manager history and my downloads start instantly as they should.
This is definately a bug that won't show up until you have used Mozilla for a while. It explains why so many other people who tested this didn't have the same problem as I did. Obviously I have been using Mozilla much longer than alot of people that tested for this.
Anyhow, I just wanted to post this heads up so you people can be prepared if this happens to you, you'll know what to look for. Keep that download manager history clear.
I don't use the download manager which is why I never noticed it. I set my preferences so that only a small dialog pops up. But it STILL keeps a history.
Anyhow, I am tickled pink this is finally solved. Now all we need is the disapearing bookmark problem to be fixed and this will be the perfect browser. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Actully there is an easy way around that, just set Mozilla to clear the listed file you download when its done, that way there is never a history of what you download.

One could also simply hit the "Clean Up" button once in a while.

I never noticed the files in that list. I don't use the download manager. I have my preferences set to show the small dialog, otherwise I definately would have cleared it.
I looked at the preferences and never seen any option to clear the list. Remember, I am using Mozilla Suite, not Firefox.
I manually clear it now, at least until I can find the preference to clear it.
about:config > browser.download.manager.retention
0: Upon successful download
1: When Mozilla exits
2: Manually

You lost me, where is all this config? Remember, I'm not using firefox, I'm using Mozilla Suite (although I may switch to Firefox if it has the option to clear the download manager)

Just type "about:config" in a tab.

Wow, that is kewl. I never knew you could do that. Thanks alot!
So...
about:config > browser.download.manager.retention
0: Upon successful download
1: When Mozilla exits
2: Manually
I am not 100% certain as to what this means. I assume it means what conditions the URL should be retained by the download manager? If I didn't want it to retain them I would select 2?
I'll experiment anyhow... I don't seem to have "browser.download.manager.retention", but I see a few others like "browser.downloadmanager.behaviour"... (no dot after "download")
Edit: downloading firefox http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif There is no option for the download manager retaining URLs... sheesh.

Okay, I downloaded Firefox (and thunderbird) and now I see what everyone was talking about.
But those that told me I should just clean up once in a while or adjust my options etc... Mozilla Suite doesn't have ANY of those options. Why, I don't know. Not even in about:config. Once I installed Firefox I noticed the CLEAN UP button (not in Suite) and the retention option which is really nice.
I don't know WHY Mozilla Suite doesn't have these. The ONLY option in Mozilla Suite is to manually clear each download entry individually. (or select all then do it)
Anyhow, thanks for the help, I'm now a firefox convert. heh. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I actually used IE for a few days after Mozilla erased all my bookmarks (I was pissed). Boy, I really missed my tabs!! I kept middle clicking on links like I normally do only to bring up that mouse smooth scroll thingy (which I notice Firefox has, which is nice along with the tabs).
Another feature I really missed was being able to type in a search in the address bar which IE doesn't do. I don't like the way Firefox has a seperate search thingy aside from the address bar, but I'm getting used to it.
Oh, and I also missed that personal toolbar.
I never really realized how much IE is lacking until I started using it again! No tabs, no personal toolbar, no search... sheesh... plus, to top it all off, for the TWO days I used IE, I managed to pick up some spyware on my system.. TWO FREAKIN DAYS!!! Heh.. I have had ZERO spyware while using Mozilla, heh.
I have noticed Thunderbird is alot like Mozilla Suite's email client, I like the way it handles junkmail better though.
I downloaded a program that backs up all your mozilla settings anyhow and I use it regularly.

Wait wait wait, what? When I was using Mozilla suite, the junk mail filter was very good at picking out spam after training it for just a few weeks. I get maybe 15-20 pieces of spam a day, and Mozilla Suite was able to pick out at least 10 of them. I've been using Thunderbird for months now, and it still can't identify more than 2 or 3 a day as spam--I have to manually mark the rest as Spam.

Which program would that be? I could use it myself for some regular back-ups.

You can remove that. I don't like it as well, so I just use the address bar along with the Google quicksearch.

It's called MozBackup, it works for all versions of Mozilla, from Suite to Firefox etc... and it backs up everything.
