From this page (http://www.aaanativearts.com/article905.html), it seems that although it may look like an eagle (which it does to me) - which means "Great Strength, Leadership and Prestige"

it's actual presentation looks more like the thunderbird meaning - "Powerful & Mystical - A Leader".

I would think that maybe this is on purpose, a combination of the two imageries...and IMO fits with the setting of the game.
