I'm sick and tired of it.
And I don't ever want to watch it again.
I'm tired of all the shitty TV shows and all the good TV shows. I'm tired of all the daytime talk shows and all the prime time dramas. I'm tired of all the music channels and all the sport channels. I'm tired of all the news channels and all the movie channels.
I hate the whole concept of television with their 5 minute blocks of entertainment followed by 2 minutes of commercials.
I'm tired of TV shows preaching me their morals and talk show hosts teaching me how to live my life while selling me their books and magazine subscriptions. I'm tired of MTV telling me what to listen to and ESPN telling me what sports to play.
I hate that damned box and I don't need it anymore. Everything that it can show me that is worthwhile I can find on the Internet faster, cleaner and without being forced to watch only commercials.
I'm tired of turning on a news channel and watching two or more reporters analyzing and interpreting what is happening in the world instead of actually reporting what is happening around the world and in my own country. I'm tired of having 50 movie channels and only one that will show me a foreign film once in a blue moon.
I hate knowing that half the channels on the television are owned by one man and still thinking that what they show is even remotely truthful.
And I'm scared knowing that in my old high school me and every other student in the school was forced to watch a student news broadcast which is sponsored by major soft drink and mass media conglomerates.
I'm turning it off in my house.
P.S. Sorry for the rant.

With rare exception I dont know how anyone can watch those hour drama's or sitcoms anymore. Its the same jokes and gags rehashed for decades. I've grown to really dislike TV in general, it suffers the same disease that radio and the media have.
I use television to watch Bill Maher, just about most of the Fox shows (Simpsons, 70s show, Family Guy, Futurama, etc.), Adult Swim (ATHF, SeaLab 2021, Robot Chickin, etc.) and movies.
And the news, but thats gone to hell lately.

Adult Swim is good.
But you should read. Reading is much better than TV, and much more enjoyable. It's much easier to get lost in a good book than it is to get lost in a TV show. And books make you think. Plus no commercials.

I hate the news the most.
There's something sinister about 99% of the population submitting their minds over to a glowing light in the corner of their family room every single night. Tv actually sends you into a mild trance. In the 70's people would discuss whether or not television content influences culture or if it is simply a reflection of culture, now watching it literally is the culture.

Urgh, no. Most books are pulpy shit. Most TV is pulpy shit. A great book is great and a great show is great. Neither can be generalised as better, more intellectually stimulating or any other bullshit comparison you want to make between media.

It would've been more appropriate to say "A good book is better than a good TV show, simply because the medium is superior because of how your brain reacts to it and creates a picture of it."

Yet strangely enough, still incorrect.
Your basis for awarding superiority seems quite random. Book use more imagination? Yes quite an arguable point. Books stimulating brain activity, on very shakey ground there as a time based medium is far more taxing and intricate in it's reading than the simple written text. Neither are superior however and it's a downright silly claim to make.

There are still programs around that are enoyable to watch, sometimes even when you don't expect them to be.
I saw an episode of Ray Mears' Buschcraft on BBC2 this week (where he learnt how to build a traditional Canadian birch bark canoe), which was really nice in a relaxed "back to nature" kind of way.
Also, there's the DVD phenomenon, which provides my preferred method of watching TV shows.

MTV was quite having problems in 1991, but with Sam Bayer's Smell Like Teen Spirit video, it gave MTV a whole new platform of videos and of kids to reach out there, said some high placed lady in MTV on 1991. I heard NIRVANA was on MTV almost all the time and Kurt was calling to get NIRVANA videos on there. When Kurt died, MTV began dying slowly too..

Eh, I don't think Kurt was exactly the "video" kind of guy. I think if he had his way there would have been no MTV, no music videos, just the radio (and it would've been good, not corporatized by Clear Channel and ABC).

I'm not sure about that. Kurt was always giving the ideas he had wathing a movie or from having a dream, and he really enjoyed doing the videos (Excluding SLTS where Sam asked him for a few more shots but Kurt didn't want, then Geffen told Kurt he HAS to do it, and he accepted, and all the not-zoomed and out-of-the-camera moments you see when he screams, well he's really angry).
On another side, they did their first video to help the sells going, but then again I think Kurt enjoyed doing the videos.
People always say he hated fame, but I wouldn't be so sure, I'm sure he loved it, but didn't realised what package that came along with it.
Maybe he didn't care about MTV at the time Smells Like Teen Spirit's video was made, but after that video was released on there, and they really got big, I'm sure Kurt enjoyed it and wanted more.

The extent of my television viewing is of course most of adult swim, all except super milk chan and inuyasha. When im home during the day then its nickelodeon in the morning for my daughter, then some mad tv reruns on comedy central or the occasional movie if i want to watch it. Im sick to death of the news networks, its more people spewing their filthy opinions than any real factual news.

Now of days it's sad...
I was up 5:00 am and saw that almost everything was paid programming and was going to be that way until 8 am. This was for every single channel on DirectTV! Thank god boomerang had some old cartoons I grew up with...
What's sad is that the humor and topics on most channels is dumbed and watered down. Where's the sophistication of humor like Johnny Carson had... Where is the news that reported about the facts and didn't try to spin it a different way to get it the way they want for manipulation.
Here's something to ponder for you, and this involves our local ABC affiliate down here:
They have an ad for them saying "they are the first to report things that the others copy the next day." Then it cuts to scenes of reports. All of them had death in them, whether it was fire, auto wreck or a homicide... What message does that send?
I'm constantly up in the early morning hours and I'll catch myself flipping through channels for something to watch (usually never finding anything) and I caught something while flipping by on the ABC channel... it was a commercial for these little online dating things... Well these days that's "normal" but they started filtering through pictures and they stopped just shy of showing nudity. This is an airwave channel showing ads that are coming close to showing stuff that's normally saved for cable.

I really don't care if its bad, good, or great TV, I am not turning on that tube to watch anything. If I want to entertain myself I will download a show off the Internet or better yet do something else other than watch TV. I'm not boycotting TV because I think that TV shows are crappy, on the contrary I think that there are more good shows on TV now than any other time during its history.
What bothers me is that TV's main function is to sell and not to inform. Thats right, the main event are commercials and not the news or the shows, but all of you already know that, yet not many of you care because you think that they don't affect the way you think. Television is a monster that is telling you how to live and you don't even know about it, scratch that, you do know about it, but you won't admit it to yourself. Do you think that all those marketing companies are stupid? Do you really think that corporations would spend all that money on advertising for nothing? With every advertising their sales go up, that is why they keep advertising. Do you think that there is anyone out there in this country (I live in the USA) who does not know about McDonald's? Why do they still advertise then? Well, if you don't believe that they do it to control you and to make you buy their product, which is the main reason they do it, then its to let children (your children too) know that they are there and that they want it and they need it.
Say "not me" all that you want but it is you, and your family and your friends and your (childrens) teachers and your neighbors and everyone you know. They are robbing you of your conscious and your subconscious. There is no war on terrorism or drugs, just the war on you and it's the only war that they are winning.

The only reality show i am willing to watch is that extreme makeover home edition. Yes its a HUGE advert for sears, kenmore and ford, but they actually help people without humiliating them.

That doesn't make it right. People nowadays believe ANYTHING they see on TV, hear on the Radio, or read on the internet. People don't question sources or motives of news or images that are given, especially to young people.
They also allow themselves to be conformed to what they see. 1950s Red Scare-conformist culture has led to a *****-up youth-oriented culture where kids aren't allowed to be kids anymore and adults aren't allowed to enjoy themselves.

I never said it was a good situation, or that it was right. The whole reason these companies do shady advertising is because they know people as a whole dont question what they see, hear and read. If it werent true they wouldnt be doing it. Blame it all on focus groups and greed.
Ive been lucky to learn about how news organizations work, which pretty much translates into any form of media with advertising. Most people dont have a clue how their news works. And what happens? Their ignorance gets taken advantage of.
News has always said they are there to "police" everyone, but whos there to police the news? Really, nobody. Dont get me wrong, i dont want government controlled news, but there needs to be some real regulations for them, not just the fear of lawsuits. Its not all like that, but its out there. Theres a reason why i dont work in editorial anymore. That and newspapers dont pay well compared to the amount of work and stress you end up with.
