Is there a (n easy) wayto convert a Wave to an IT file? I know you can do it in MODplug, but i need the file ro be around 1 or 2 MB and down. Not the same size as the wave (20.6mb in this case).

Yes.

Not unless you can break up your original song into its seperate instruments. Like MIDI, tracker type songs use a score sheet. Unlike MIDI, tracker songs use pre-recorded instruments that are included as part of the file.

You're not really converting anything. The entire sound sample is treated by the tracker program as one instrument that is played as a single note.

No, it can't be done automatically and easily like you want it to be done. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Why?

I swear, every single month I see someone trying to convert a waveform into a tracker or MIDI format, and ignoring of course how nearly-impossible it is to do without a lot of work, I don't understand why anyone would want to! What do MIDI and modules have that some people think is an improvement over WAV?

Is it the smaller size? Well, duh, that's because they're completely different ways of storing sound, but it's pretty naive to think that doesn't come at a cost. I hope no one looks at WAV file sizes, looks at MOD file sizes, and thinks, "Hey these ones are lot smaller! Maybe I should compress my whole music library into this!" http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Is it the ability to get sheet music or look at the separate instruments and patterns? Well, that would be useful, but it's really naive to think a computer can look at the waveform and perfectly separate out every single instrument and note and track. Humans have trouble working backwards like that; what makes anyone think it's easy to program a computer to?

Sorry for the rant, but this question strikes me as incredibly useless, given how often I see it asked.

Actaully, the wav came from a midi, so can you convert a midi to it?

I know there's a program called MID2XM, but it's not very good - at least it wasn't when I tried it last.

You can try ztracker (http://ztracker.sourceforge.net/).

So originally you were trying MIDI->WAV->IT?

My head is hurting from the inanity of such a process... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Modplug Tracker over at www.modplug.com (http://www.modplug.com) probably can. I just tried a test MIDI->IT conversion, and it sounds surprisingly good, but you'll almost certainly have to go in and make some changes yourself. No program can get this kind of conversion perfect.
