Man i want to upgrade to the 64 vesion but i have xp home instead of pro http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif And im still on a 32 bit processor coz i am really in two minds about buying a 64 bit one coz im still on agp. I dont know whether i should stick with my current machine until im ready to do an overhaul to PCIe or buy a new processor and a new os for my current machine.. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif This one still has a 6800gt (agp) in it that i just bought recently and i took so much time and effort to build this machine...

I wouldn't toss the gt just for a pci-e version....thats just plain useless... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

What kind of mobo do you have? If it supports an AMD64 chip why not stick one in if you want it badly? I know I've got mine http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As for switching in your O/S....not wise yet. Its ok to dual boot, but I would not go 64 full blown. Driver support is lacking still and there aren't enough programs to take advantage yet.

Still...I'd like to try it as well. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif 64-bit farcry patches should be on their way!

'Mr Gates confirmed that the new version of Windows, codenamed Longhorn, would enable computers to process data at 64 bits per second, compared with the current standard of 32 bits per second. "

Bill must not have his head screwed on right. He's the CSA for God sakes. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

In other case, for the stuff that I do, I probably don't need XP Pro 64. I'd probably get XP Pro, because it's faster than XP Home if I'm not mistaken. You've also got to remember that to use XP Pro 64, you need an Athlon 64 processor or an Intel processor with EMT64. You can't just install it on a Northwood, Prescott, or Barton designed CPU.

Id like to. But id have to get an A64 in my PC 1st. *Dont dare tell me that I dont have to and that i can get an Intel of some sort.*

You can use an Intel OR an AMD CPU. It just has to have 64-bit compatibility.

I'm not exchanging my current version Windows XP for anything else until Longhorn proves itself. If Longhorn sucks, (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/04/26/1652253&from=rss) I might still have to get it in order to play games, but my computer will definitely be a dual boot Linux/Windows machine.

I don't have XP Pro. Got XP Home, so I probably don't want to cough up a bunch of extra money for XP Pro 64 Retail. How much faster is XP Pro than XP Home, and would anyone recommend it.

Wow!!!! That means WinXP 64 will be twice as fast! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gif

WinXP Home and WinXP Pro are exactly the same codebase. XP Pro supports some additional features - domain access and better networking support and things like that, but they both run at the same speed on the same hardware. If you don't need the networking support or the ability to run a web server or anything like that, XP Pro would be a waste of money. Going to 64-bit can signifigantly increase processing speed though, depending on the application.

Personally I would have a big problem making a jump to a 64-bit operating system with no way to go back if you run into problems. As was already mentioned, driver support isn't up to speed as yet. Even Microsoft is saying this. Plus, Microsoft has never major change in OS technology without hitting a few bumps in the road. The code is supposed to be very similar, but who knows how every one of your apps is going to react to the new OS.

I also can't see why they're not selling a retail version. I have a retail version of WinXP. It's not tied to any specific hardware in my PC, so I can upgrade anything if I want and the worst thing that could happen would be for me to reactivate. With the OEM versions, the OS gets tied to your motherboard. To get this freedom, I paid more for the OS. How would a change to an OEM version (the only version available) be a good deal for me?

I honestly believe it should be offered as a free update/upgrade.

I bought XP when I built my latest computer, which happened to be a 64-bit chip. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tinyted.gif

Me too, but I don't know whether the stuff that I'm doing will take advantage of it. Gaming, and I do create DVDs, as well as encode/decode them for backups. Gonna put them onto a massive 1 TB file server and run them from the selected hard drive onto the TV. Perhaps XP Pro 64 could be useful for that purpose. Just not for games.
