Well, currently I've seen all the latest "guaranteed" spooks in games, and avoided the generic ones. I feel brave enough now to watch the Evil Dead series. However, what the hell's the order?!

Here's what I'm assuming:

The Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn
Army of Darkness

From what I've been reading (reviews), it seems that Evil Dead 2 is just a re-make of ED 1, but with the added "slapstick" humor (Which I have NO idea what is. I've never seen slapstick humor before. I'm too political http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif .)

Should I keep ED1 on the queue? (I'm renting these from Netflix.)

Evil Dead - Psychotic horror (including an extremely warped scene involving a woman and some trees.. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif ) with gallons of blood and gore

Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn - Spiritual remake of the original with a larger budget and the addition of campy and slapstick humor (e.g. The Three Stooges) and a cliffhanger ending that resulted in...

Army of Darkness - Campy and slapstick humor with minor blood/gore.

Best cult series on the face of the earth http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

Actually, if you watch Evil Dead 2 with the commentary Sam, Bruce, Rob and Ted all say that Evil Dead 2 is not a remake of the first.

Anyway, just watch all three movies dogy, they are pretty damned good. The first is the only really serious movie. The other two kind of joke around a more. Especially the third movie.

Oh and after you watch them, watch it with the commentary, they are pretty funny to listen to while watching those movies. Also, be sure to get the special DVD's of them. The frist one's special edition comes in the Necronomicon book, the second movie (which was limited edition) comes in a big tin casing, and the third had two diffrent double-disc releases (but both contained the same exact things). The re-release of the double-disc is called "Army of Darkness: Boomstick Edition" The double-disc comes with the version that was released in theatres and comes with the director's cut.

Evil Dead 2 is not a remake. What it does is recap what went on in Evil Dead 1 for the first 15 minutes. The reason it was re shot and made to look like it was a remake was because they could not obtain the rights to the original footage. After the first 15 minute recap the story of Evil Dead 2 starts.

I'm still hoping and praying for a Sam and Bruce to return for a Evil Dead 4. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Regardless of what Raimi and Campbell intended, Evil Dead 2, from the POV of story, is essentially a remake of The Evil Dead. It has a few new elements within the characters and story, but when you get right down to it it's people in a cabin in the woods trying to survive the night with nasty spirits trying to do them in.

That having been said, Evil Dead 2 is the much more enjoyable film of the 2 in my opinion. Campbell is put right up front in a way that he wasn't in the original, and he makes the most of it. Raimi goes nuts with absolutely brilliant camera shots that make this thing a wonder to behold. The over the top camp cements it as an absolute classic. Great flick.

I saw Evil Dead 2 and AOD (which was by far the weakest of the three) in the theatre when each was first released, and I wish I could find them playing on the big screen somewhere again, as they are great flicks to watch with a packed house, and have enough of a cult following now that I think they could pack a house for a night or two.

Seen ED1, and was [u]VERY</u> dissapointed.

Ok, blood, gore, zombies, atmosphere, yada yada yada, but Ash is just some ***** teen boy. There is no smarty one liners, no badass attitude, nothing.

I really want to see ED2, as thats meant to be the one with the humour, and the badass ash.

Well, can't really remember when I saw ED1 the first time, but it sure wasn't when it came it, since I was just born the year after. Anyway, I really liked ED1, but I liked ED2 a lot more. So, there is still hope, even if you didn't enjoy the first one http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

hehehe you just expected the wrong thing from the first film. Ash is barely even the focuss and is quite passive, one reason why they gave him a unisex name Ashley.

Even though i did give out the impression that I dint enjoy it, I did, it was still dissapointing. Its like eating a vanilla single scoop of ice cream, when you were expecting a 5 tonne chocholate sundae with all the trimmings

Well... I don't think you'll get anything that fancy with the Evil Dead movies. Low budget greatness is what these are.

There's a certain charm to the campy black humor. And most people I know, either love the movies or hate them.
But for me Evil Dead is a great film. I love the fact that it is the serious one of the films. Seeing Ash frightened and forced to fight was what made it great... it built up the Ash we come to know and love for the next two movies.

But, my fav part of Evil Dead 2... Ash and his hand. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I think I may have to watch those tomorrow.

I revive this thread!

Anyway, ED1 & 2 just came today from Netflix. I've been watching ED1, but the DVD went craptastic and I wiped it down. Gonna try it again.

I stopped at the part when Ash hacked off Linda's head with the shovel.

EDIT: I just saw ED2. I didn't see any 3 Stooges references after Ash's hand went crazy.

However, I was bursting in laughter when Ash was aiming around for his hand. Especially when it tripped the mouse trap, and flipped off Ash http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually the real order is Within The Woods then what you said. But, Within The Woods is impossible to find. According to what I read, ED2 starts with a recap of ED1 and then starts off with the sequel. But I REALLY dont think Ash is that stupid.
I still havent seen all of ED1 yet.... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I just mentioned the 3 Stooges as an example of slapstick humor.

Also take note of the name of the book he places on top of the trashcan (with the hand underneath)
