Has anyone thought of creating a utility to convert maps made by Build into the PWAD format used by games such as Doom, Heretic, Hexen etc.? Or even .art files into .lmp files? graemlins/dopefish.gif

You DO realize that Duke supports slopes and other things that the Doom engine does not?

Yes I do, but in this case slopes wouldn't take effect in a doom game. If you actually tested such a hypothetical level slopes would default to their normal flat position. Besides, Doom looks good enough without slopes and other features the Build engine implements.
I contacted Ken Silverman about this and he says it is very possible despite the additional features Build has. The main reason I started this post is that Doom editing has one drawback; you cannot design your level in a Doom editor as you can with Build. This would make for much more detailed doom levels as you can actually see most of what you are doing with the Build engine.

Thanks anyway... I guess it's either that or just convert Doom game data (like maps, sounds, images and stuff) to run under Duke Nukem 3D, which I know can be done but violates copyright laws. That's another thing I've wanted to do.

You can't just have slopes as flat sectors - the majority of levels would loose playability.
Oh and the fact is Doom doesn't allow it's sectors to overlap means a lot of maps simply wouldn't be convertable.
What you're asking for is a better Doom engine editior - ask the Doom community.

Frankly, I'd be surprised if someone hasn't already programmed a Doom level editor with a 3d preview feature similar to what Build has. (The hard part will be finding it. I've been trying for months. I may have to write my own!)

There is an alternative. Doom has a EDuke, of sorts, for doom. It is called ZDoom. There are several others but I personally used Zdoom. It has cool features, that you originally could not do, such as over and under bridges. This is probably the closest the 'doom community' will come to enhancing doom.

I really like doom legacy. They have ports to win32, Linux, and a bunch of network play features. The current beta handles slopes, if I recall....

I'd have to agree with mellevelence in that ZDoom is the best out of the Doom source ports simply because it implements Hexen ACS behavior scripts, which allows for the creation of polyobjects such as rotating sectors, sliding doors etc. that you would normally find in a Build engine based game. On top of all that it also supports Boom type wads, which is also another cool source port.

ZDoom is the best port ever, even with bot support! DOOM TOURNAMENT!!! images/icons/smile.gif
I use ZDoom since so many years. With its ZETH level editor you can create doom maps with fog, transluscent water and so on.

But if you really want to have s.th. special then go jDoom! Those lens flares look sweet. images/icons/smile.gif

As an aside for those people that want lenseflares in everything (which is alot of people):
Lense flares are stupid unless there's a lense of some sort... they don't occur to the human eye without one.
