View Full Version : Setting up my 250 GB drive.

I've got it set up, and it's detected in the BIOS, Device Manager, and there's a removal thing on my system tray. How do I get more space than 128 GB? Windows won't format partitions over 137 GB, so how do I get my 220 GB or so space?

What Windows is it?
I got a 200 GB HDD formatted by Windows XP.

This sounds like an external drive. It should work right away; none of the BIOS limitations should matter (not like you'd experience them with the machine you have).

Yeah, which version of Windows are you using?

Say, you're not one of those morons that refuses to install service packs, are you? At least Windows 2000 SP3 or Windows XP SP1 is required to support 48-bit LBA.

No, I'm not a moron. I've got Windows XP Home SP2 with the latest BIOS. SP1 or later is supposed to have this 48-bit addressing or LBA stuff. Doesn't work. Damn BIOS got corrupted on me during the update, but it works fine now.

Is this an internal or external drive?

Jeff
05-02-2005, 06:23 PM
It's an external USB enclosure with an IDE drive hooked into it. The jumpers are set on master, and the drivers and software are all installed. It's recognized in disk management, and the device manager, but not in My Computer. That's only because I haven't formatted it yet. The drive is online with 128 GB of usable space.

Maybe the drive is pre-formatted as FAT32.
Try reformatting it as NTFS.

The drive and enclosure were separate. It's a Western Digital Caviar 250 GB ATA 100 drive which I bought OEM. Then I just screwed it into the enclosure and off I went. We'll see.

It sounds like the IDE controller in the enclosure doesn't support 48-bit LBA.

I have that exact same hard drive and right now it is set up with a 29.3GB partition and a 203GB partition.

Heh. So what should I do? Return it for one that does?

I phoned them up, and the guy said that they've sold that particular enclosure paired with a large hard drive many times, and haven't had any problems. It's one of the three external enclosures that they sell. He added that I might want to try putting it in my remaining 3.5" bay, and seeing if I can format it there. If that doesn't work, then we'll look at returning it. He also said that if you run out of 3.5" bays, that you could use your 5.25" bays for the extra drives I plan on buying.

EDIT: There's also a considerable amount of heat coming from the device. The enclosure is made of metal, but maybe it's cheap metal. The other enclosures seem to be of cheap quality too, so maybe it's best to put the extra hard drives in the case, instead of the outside. My computer's parts are brand new when I bought them, but that's because they're names like Asus, Seagate, Antec...Who the hell is Welland anyways?

All right!! My 232 GB partion is online and running. SWEET!!. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Installed it on the second IDE channel on the mobo, and into the 4th drive bay. Have to run a couple tests, but I don't think I'll have any heat problems. My current drives run between 33 and 40 C before and during load. That includes the 2 Raptors, which run at 35 C idle. The coolest drive would be the Raptor RAID at 32 C, followed by the Caviar at 35 C and the Seagate at 38 C. Looks good.

No, but you can only store so much every night before you have to burn it all to DVD-R and make room for the next day's collection, right?

I don't save a byte of porn to disk at all. What I'm doing with it is perfectly legal, and that's all you need to know.

This is the solution right there.
FAT 32 can only handle 127 GB.
NTFS can handle buttloads more.
