View Full Version : War Pigs (v1.2)
Just finished polishing up one of my maps for Duke3D. Thanks by comment of Ding Bat made on my site I worked the last week on a better version which is pretty much bugless at the moment. As far as I can see, you must play this map with the Jonofport, since I used more sectors then the original can handle. The regular version of Duke3D should be fine.
Grab your copy of War Pigs here;
DukeMaps.net - War Pigs (http://www.dukemaps.net/duke-warpigs.php)
Feel free to drop some comment either here or on War Pig's tagboard.
Happy fraggin' soldier. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dopefish.gif

Just played through it with hitile, so there aren't any comments I can give regarding texturing and shading. Overall it was a nice map, but there were a couple of things that bothered me a bit; the scale in example. Sometimes it looked really cartoony and fun ( boxes ), but sometimes it looked a bit over the top and just too unrealistic ( some switches, and viewscreens and such ). Apart from that it was ok- I like big doors and corridors. The other thing is that it gets a bit repetitive ( find switch, shoot enemy ), which was a pitty.
It was a nice play though, and I'm glad someone finally used the jetpack again http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif One final thing though; now that alot of sprites are replaced with model, don't forget to give your ammo boxes some nice angles in 2d mode.

Well I have to say that it was pretty good. Lightning was above average although many of the lights were breakable but didn't react when broken.
Scale was indeed a bit big - and most rooms were pretty empty. However trimwork and texturing was good so the level didn't look bad at all. I just wished there had been a location or two with something neat - something above average.
Also the ending was a bit anti-climatic. The level was huge - took me nearly 30 mins. So it was a bit disappointing to find only a Nukebutton in a normal location after all that.
Nevertheless - gameplay was mostly enjoyable and the design was above average although could have used a bit more detailing.

Just played it, and what can I say..
The gameplay rocked hard. Great firefights against tough enemies - which I tend to really like, and the map was so long http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It took me like an hour to beat it. I did die a couple times, the 'Battlelord surprise attack' worked pretty well with me :P I also got killed once or twice, mostly because of my own stupidity since the ammo / monster ratio was pretty well balanced. I loved the atmosphere too. Oh and the map is huge but because of the way you placed the respawning monsters I didnt even get lost once.
About design - well its pretty basic (as Mikko said most rooms feel a bit empty, and theres no 3D spritework), but thanks to the nice texturing / lighting / shading it doesnt really show :P Kinda reminded me of the original Duke maps (E2) design-wise. A few misaligned textures here and there, and a lighting bug, apart from that nothing to complain about, really. Thats just your own style and not every map has to be filled with 3D spriteworks and sector-wasting useless details.
Overall I think its a very good map gameplay-wise, and the design is OK. Should be a hot map at MSDN http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Thanx for the map I had a blast with it.

Pretty good map. Keep it up http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Thank a lot for all of your excellent critic people. War Pigs isn't my best try (Moonbase (http://www.dukemaps.net/duke-moonbase.php) is) but I'm glad it was worth playing. I focused a lot on the enemies/weapons-ammo ratio, the intension is to keep the player far from having a full arsenal but never from running out of something.
War Pigs is indeed quite large, but the actual secret is to make the player following a certain long route through the map a couple of times, each time the player should encounter new monsters in order to keep him entertained and realizing that he is on the right track. (Wandering around and having no monster encountered could make the player doubt if he went the right way)
I'm petty glad that a lot of these intensions came over well.
Oh, as for that Battle Lord ambush, that's what I was referring to on my site where War Pigs is described. You're suppose to take some steriods, run to the left where an atomic health and a fully loaded (well, almost) Devastator is waiting for you. A smart player still has 5 rockets which he picked up before. This is the moment where I wanted the player to go wild with the heavy guns against big enemies.
So, there are 6 secrets in War Pigs, which one of you found them all without loading the map in Build? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hhg.gif
I'll be working on completing Helltown the next couple of days

Aw darn, I thought this would be another City style map. Guess I'll have to settle with a Space Ship one..
Have no fear, Helltown is almost here. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dopefish.gif
P.S. = I've added some of you folks critic on the page where War Pigs (http://www.dukemaps.net/duke-warpigs.php) is described, to show you that I appreciate good comment.

By the way: The crew quarters had a missing texture. I also unzipped Moonbase to play it and noticed more missing textures. Why?

For Moonbase, you need the textures of Duke it out in D.C. As for War Pigs, I'll check that bug later on the evening.
EDIT = War Pigs fixed and added as attachment. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dopefish.gif

I actually can recall running to the right (without using steroids), I didnt know the Battlelords were 'stayput sprites' and I thought they would follow me. I took the elevator I think, wandered in the room downstairs aiming at the upper window, waiting for the Battlelords to eventually come to me, and after some time I thought they maybe couldnt, so I ran back to the main corridor, noticed they were stayputs, and found a safe angle to shot them RPG shells to death :P
So, there are 6 secrets in War Pigs, which one of you found them all without loading the map in Build?
Cant remember, I think I found at least 4 or 5 of them http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Maybe I found all 6, I couldnt say really.

Reviewed - check http://www.planetduke.com/msdn/
I don't have a GameSpy ID, but does that download include the Authoring Document I supply all my maps with? Another thing, I would have appreciated it if you would have asked me before you uploaded that map. Sure, it's nice that my work gets some extra attention through another site, but basically I don't allow any kind of republishing of my work. I won't act difficult if it stays with War Pigs, but don't do this in the future. Sorry if I sound angry, which I'm not, just bear in mind that not all designers like this kind of unwanted commercial/republishing of their work, even though you give proper credit.

I've got about 8 maps at most of the webs. The more the merryer, the more the people can find my maps to play. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
It's not commercial/rebublishing, you advertised it for free and the D/Ls are free, so it now it belongs to everybody. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif
Otherwise why make a map and put on the for people to D/L. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

This is the first time I have ever heard someone that wants to limit the availability of there free map/mod/whatever. Why exactly, to make it more exclusive or do you get paid per view for some banners or something like that?
No offence, just curious.

Wow - that's odd. Well it's your loss...
And yes the html document is with the map file - as always.
And another thing - you didn't mention any of this in your txt. Review sites take the maps they can find or the ones they receive and review them without asking anyone anything. The case is different if you forbid this in the txt but in this case - there was no mention of any kind about this in your txt that came with the map. If you don't want people to spread your levels you have to tell them so - we're not mind readers and reviewers assume that free stuff can be distributed freely (as it should).
commercial/republishing of their work, even though you give proper credit.
I have a problem with this line of yours. Does it degrade you somehow that other sites "republish" (I wouldn't even call it that) your work? It's simply about distributing the level which is the point of this whole process - you make something you like and you want people to experience it (and us reviewers tell the public whether it's worth experiencing or not). And in no way it's for commercial use.
So is the actual problem with the review or with the fact that I uploaded the level to Fileplanet?

It seems that my policy has encountered some negative reactions. Well, I decided to change it, just as can be read on the homepage of DukeMaps.net. The maps may be freely spread as long as the original Authoring Document is enclosed. There, sounds better now, right? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hhg.gif
Another news, Helltown (http://www.dukemaps.net/duke-helltown.php) is done. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Itīs a pretty big map, over 1500 sectors, and over 12,000 walls, filesize over 480Kb.

Yes, Helltown is a pretty difficult map, more difficult then War Pigs. But itīs not impossible to finish though.
Anyone cares for a demo seeing me playing Helltown to get the map better to know? (Assuming I can still record a demo).

For those of you who think Helltown is too difficult for them I have recorded a demo. Click here to download the demo. (http://www.dukemaps.net/duke/helltown/helltown-demo.rar) Put it in the rootdir of the game and start it. It should start automatically, you'll be seeing me playing Helltown and uncovering some of the secret areas but I won't use them. Furthermore, I believe that you also need the map itself if you wanna run the demo.

Odd. The JonoF port states that helltown.map is not found. It's right in the rootdir with the demo.
Never had this problem before.

Won't work with Jonof unless the directory structure is exactly the same. Meaning - if your duke folder is in d:\games\duke3d I can't run it if my duke dir is c:\games\duke3d.

Pretty good. What did caught my attention was the building near the start with all those boxes. It had light but no light sources of any kind. Also I don't see the point of not aligning some of the boxes - many of them appear as half-sunken into the floor. Other than that - I liked it.
As was pretty inevitable, some light bugs have been fixed in Helltown plus the lightning in some areas have been improved. New version has been uploaded (http://www.dukemaps.net/duke/helltown/helltown.zip).

I had some trouble with the DNS-settings for DukeMaps but that was solved some weeks ago. Since that was before you posted that bugreport on the tagboard of War Pigs, it can't be due to this. Another note, it is more often then it should that the webservers are having a too big load, which could cause your browser from saying that the site couldn't be accessed or something in that kind.
