Okay guys. Had a bit of a problem the other day with my cable connection. While talking to my isps technical support (sometimes good, sometimes not so http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) He ended up relatively convinced that I had some sort of spyware on my machine due to the amount of listening/udp processes I had running. Off the top of my head there were about 25. How normal is this likely to be, bearing in mind I have a firewall enabled, 2 spyware programs running their resident protection (Spybot S & D and M$ Antispyware) and Avast AV, running its own resident stuff ?
FWIW I actually don't believe I have any spyware about - my pc is both updated and scanned regularly for it and virii - but I'm more interested how large an amount of processes 'netstat -a' should be reporting with my type of setup.

On average I have 30 processes running. The techincal support guy you talked to is obviously an idiot. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Are you talking about processes running in general, or processes using your network connection?

If you have any speed or bandwidth problems caused by a few spyware apps on a cable connection then they must be VERY chatty spyware apps. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif I doubt that is your problem.
If you don't want the hackers or spyware getting in, close some of the open ports that you have, eg. Bit Torrent, Kazaa...

I bet the first question he asked was if the cable was plugged in or not.

103 here! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
But I'm cheating, ie., not using Windows. With that in mind, *looks at VMware* - 26.

The problem was a lack of connection totally, nothing to do with speed. If I'm connected I get pretty much my full bandwidth if I'm downloading something from my ISPs binary newsgroups.

Bit Torrent and Kazaa come nowhere near my PC. Read my previous post to understand why http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Could be something that doesnt relate to your computer at all, maybe theres phone line difficulties, or alot of people are using your ISP and the network is conjested.

Maybe try unplugging your cable modem, wait a few seconds for it to clear itself, then try again. That solves many problems so who knows...
