At first I wasn't really interested in max payne, someone that I knew (but moved to a school at the other side of the country) told me it's a good game, and serious sam too.
I thought: ok, but my computer can't handle it (had only a pentium 2 at the time)
when I got my pentium 4, I wasn't really interested (I haven't thought about the game anymore, I immediately played the demo of return to castle wolfenstein, because it's a follow-up to my favourite game when I was 5 year old: spear of destiny (not wolfenstein 3d, didn't know about that game then)
also got into doom 3 and HL2 and far cry and prince of persia and painkiller etc...
I played the demo of max payne 2 but it didn't really sell me. because it isn't a real FPS (a TPS http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) and the "depressing" style (black/noir) didn't suit my taste
(after all it doesn't matter, at that time my english wasn't good enough, and would skip all story things)

recently, I decided to play all big releases I've missed from the past: wolfenstein 3d and doom 2 and the quake series (like mentioned in my doom 2 thread in general gaming forum)
that thread mentioned serious sam so I checked it out too.
but when I think of serious sam, I automatically think of max payne (since that friend told me serious sam and max payne are both awesome games)
I gave it a try, and liked max payne A LOT! the way the story is told is fantastic.
I'm now done with max payne 2, it was awesome too, but the style is a bit different, it has lost it's "dark" style from MP1, I don't know how come.
when I played mp1 I thought the game took place in the middle 20th century, because it was all so old-fashioned (the elevators from that motel etc...)

I also like the humor
- in mp1, that graphic novel about "I'm in a graphic novel", and then "I'm in a computer game, weapon statistics floating on my eye, .... the worst thing that can happen to me"
awesome http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
- captain baseball batboy, especially the one with his bomb on his head that was so funny:D
still don't know how it ended, I guess I missed a TV screen?
- all connections to mp1 in mp2, the ragnarock lightning advertention lying in part 1 chapter 1, the my lord and lady, ... the connection to max payne and that detective on TV... the flesh of fallen angels, ...
I'm sure there were other funny moments, can't think of them now, like mona's playhouse, was cool http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

the story was a bit confusing at times, that guy was on his side but then moved to this side because another guy has also moved to that side while another guy is on the opposite side, unlike someone else that's on the other's side (I mean 2 sides: virginni against vlad)
I wonder why I was enemy of BOTH sides?
after all it doesn't matter, everyone is dead except me http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

final rating: excellent, other games should follow max payne's example for having such a good story, and the fact that the action is good too makes it a EXCELLENT game.

EDIT: also like how everything connects with each other.
like the signs "schizophrenic", "insane", "mad", ... from the funhouse that reappeared in a dream of max, in the prison.
they probably have very talented scriptwriters to come up with such a thing.

also at 3 points in the game someone was singing a certain song. after defeating the end boss, and the credits rolled, it came to my attention it's the credits song that they were singing. original stuff http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So, you finally have discovered the greatness of MP and MP2! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There is indeed a lot of humor in the two games, you should try Part 2 Prologue again.

"Hey! Is it too much to ask for some privacy? I'll be out When It's Done!"

"Come on Broussard, how can you expect people to remember your name when you can't even spell it right yourself?
-They'll remember when I crack the case.
Like you're ever going to crack it. "

Actually what the fact is that RMD has always maintained their ideology to make a good game ...... note that not to make a popular game.

Also if you'll carefully notice, the character models made in MP2 were IMO one of the finest models made in that polycount range. It's just great and can always make you feel that if the developer is not Remedy nobody can make that impression of the next MP sequel.

Hi Cerberus_e,
We're glad you liked the game! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

...and the fact that you can go back to now almost a four-year-old game (MP1) and enjoy it.
Thanks!

yeah I've seen the duke nukem forever & faraoh's tomb joke in the prologue of part 2.

but it didn't beat the awesomeness of the conversation where a policeman is interrogating & making a report of someone that murdered his wife and the man who had dated with his wife behind his back.
that was so funny http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

and going back to 4 year old games is not a problem, even wolfenstein 3D is still very good in my opinion.
still have to play hovertank 3D http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I like old games as much as I like new games like doom 3 and also interested in upcoming games like F.E.A.R.

in the garage of the prologue of part 2, miller and broussard are talking to each other.
you have to go to the garage before writing your report or before the bomb goes off though

I recently just finished MP1 and I'm about to start MP2. The only thing that annoyed me in the dreams was following the red blood trail. I kept falling off the edge and that just plain annoyed me. Very good writers though at Remedy... Top game developer.

See, I liked those levels. I saved so much that it was really no big deal if Max fell off the edge (years of jumping puzzle training there http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif), and it was honestly kind of funny. . .

You can do an outright save on PC yeah? On PS2 it's autosave, so if you fall off the edge, you go back to the start and that reallllly annoyed me. Can't keep saving on PS2, but I finally got through it in the end and got to shooting and killing... My forte http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hehe. 18 is not a kid! :P But yeah, auto-save would've been a lot better... It's not that bad though... Just annoying when you get to the last part of a chapter and you die. Also, my pc has never been able to handle any games other than the sims lol. I simply cannot afford the latest and greatest pc, being a student n all...

Both MP games run on pretty much any machine...

Yeah but the RAM in my machine positively sucks. It freezes when I open word documents and stuff... lol, the hard drive is too big for the RAM. My old hard drive conked out so I replaced it with twice the size and the RAM is really crap on it.

Then get another 256MB stick. They aren't that expensive, especially if you have a job.

I've finally finished it for the last time lol... I've attempted it on numerous occasions where I've become too busy to actually finish it, that, or I lost interest and turned my attention to something else. I really enjoyed the game though, might start MP2 this weekend.

I liked the blood trail, it was scary http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It was scary at first with the scream everytime you fell from the maze, but after that... I really got annoyed with it lol. I was so happy to get to the end of those two mazes.

I just completed Max Payne 1 and 2 this summer, I found the e3 max Payne 1 trailer on my Manhattan project disk, and thought it looked pretty good, so I got them both for pc and also max payne 1 for ps2.

I just finished both games this week and now I want more! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Both were amazing games, I can't believe I put off playing them for so long. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm curious as to what would happen to Max after the whole ordeal. How would he explain all the chaos? Would he go to jail? Be commended for his deeds? Damn....where is Max Payne 3? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now I really want to keep an eye on further Remedy games....

But Max Payne 3 will be Rockstar's work... Sh!t...

I can imagine it now - brilliant new gaming mechanics and complete lack of atmosphere... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif BTW: both games are depressing, especially the second one.

Rockstar's problem is that their games focus on shock factors rather than style.....something that may hurt Max Payne 3. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

With Max Payne they already have a style and atmosphere set by Remedy and hopefully they can recreate that to some extent. If they can even recreate the feeling in mp1/2 halfway, keep the gameplay and add something new it should be a great game.

Remeber they did record the dialog, photographed the cast so they should be fairly familiar with how to set the mood. The lack of Sam Lake will probably be noticable though.

Most of all I am just realy curious what Rockstar will do with the Max Payne franchise.
