View Full Version : 3D Hardware

For those who believe that 3d shutter glasses do not add anything to a game, George Lucas is making a full 3D version of 'A New Hope' using LCD 3D shutter glasses. If Mr. Lucas is paying attention then maybe more people will realise the immersion factor of this hardware. Hopefully, (True) 3D gaming will become more mainstream as a result, causing developers to actually consider stereo as a viable playing medium as they code the game.
At the moment, 95% of games work in stereo with about 80% working really well. Incidentally, I am quite sure that DNF will work well. Also, any Source engine games work brilliantly as do the Doom engine. And of course, the old Quake3 engine, as reliable as always, works superbly.

The problem with shutter glasses is that you need a very high refresh rate CRT (LCD don't have fast enough refresh). Something on the order of 120Hz and above.

Unless you are talking about holographic projections, there is no true 3D.
If I want glasses, I visit opticians. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Shutter glasses are cool when you:
-own them, and dont mind wearing them
-have a 200Hz CRT
-dont have to share them with anybody
-want a great 3D effect for a good price
Shutter glasses are stupid when you:
-want silence
-have a LCD or <100Hz CRT
-dont like to wear glasses
-want to look at your screen from a distance
-want to look what your brother is playing
-have a game that doesnt work with shutter glasses

Let's see what happens then. BTW, the glasses run fine at 75Hz and upwards. No flicker, no eyestrain and you feel that you can reach into the screen and pull things out. In Far Cry, having the insects buzz around your head is unbelievable. I urge anyone who has not tried shutter glasses, to give them a go. After that, you DO NOT want to go back to a flat screen.
And yes, you DO NEED a CRT. I have a 22" Ilyama.

Sorry for being misinformed, but what are we talking about? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif What exactly are shutterglasses?

The Nvidia stereo drivers which are updated regularly along with the regular drivers, produce a double image on the screen. The LCD shutter glasses plug into the graphics card and each glass becomes opaque in alternate sequence in sync with the refresh rate of the monitor. This blocks the vision of each eye alternately and the software is such that the active eye sees only one of the images, say, from the left perspective.
On the next cycle, that eye is blocked and the right eye sees only from the right perspective. Just as in normal vision, your brain puts these two slightly different perspectives together into one image. The result being perception of depth. A standard FPS corridor for example, will appear to go right out the back of your monitor and into the next room.
The effect is amazing and often unexpected by new users as they have been let down in the past by the old 'red and blue filters'. Most games work in stereo straight out of the box and need no special programming by the developers. Others need slight tweaks to config files etc. Half Life 2? Stunning and amazing. Doom3? Spare underwear next to you. It's got to be seen to be believed. There is a healthy online community, despite this technology not yet being mainstream. Hopefully, when Lucas brings out the original Star Wars in the cinema, interest will be sparked up.
Requirements? A decent CRT monitor (17" and above). Also a good gaming spec PC as there is a framerate hit when using the glasses as they are producing two images in real time. I'd say for current games, at least a FX5700. Oh and the card must be Nvidia. ATI don't produce stereo drivers.
And if you're gonna play games like Doom3 or the old game, Undying, a large and full underwear drawer.

By the way, for people who DONT own any shutterglasses but want to see what is does:
Requirements:
-you have a nvidia videocard, TNT of Geforce
-red/green 3D glasses, or make some
How to:
Go to www.nvidia.com (http://www.nvidia.com) and go to the driver download page, select the 'Consumer 3D stereo' and go one downloading the driver.
After installing and restarting your computer go to the advanced nvidia settings.
Activate your 3D glasses settings (anaglyp version) and run a test if the settings are fine.
If you dont own any 3D red/green glasses, you could create some your own.
I'm gonna try stuff my own, and make some tutorial of some kind.
Cons:
You dont see the colors, because of the red/green stuff.
Pros:
It doesnt cut your refreshrate to half http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I tried making my own Red-Green glasses, but they didnt fit very well and looked rather silly.
But they worked, thats what we want.
I went to the store and got the Shrek 3D DVD containing 4 Red/Blue glasses, should be enought for you and your friends.
Anaglyph mode worked in all Unreal bases games, other ones locked up (dont know why).
My 3D stereo glasses do have a advantage, because you'll see ALL colors and most games work (didnt lock up).
The 3D effect it generates is SO cool, I dont want to play without it.
Now I'm replaying Max Payne 2, and it rocks! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

So with the glasses you see the game like you see it when playing with monitor only (no red/green/blue colors)?
