View Full Version : 16 color mode?
So I was running a chkdsk on my drives, and when it rebooted back into Windows, my 2000 Pro style login screen was blue and white, with white buttons. The XP logo was white. It's fixed, but anyone know what could have caused this? Didn't touch anything. I know Kevin Wolff would like to add this screenshot to his collection http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. However, I forgot to take one. I re-installed my graphics drivers, and there is only 16 and 32-bit color modes like there should be.

Laptop or desktop? I've seen this before on a laptop when the graphics card was set to "dock mode" in the BIOS and it was docked at a station.

What Wamplet said. Going back to a previous restore point is the quickest and easiest way to fix it.
Windows XP's default vga driver has a minimum hardware video requirement of 800x600 and 256 colors. You should have been able to see more that 16 colors, even in Safe Mode. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I've seen XP go into 16 colors in Safe Mode before.
What would be nice is if I forced my computer to be in 2 color mode or something less than that of what I have currently. My question is, whould it improve windows (xp's) performance?

Not likely. Video cards usually take care of most of that. What you say was true, however, of 1997/98 hardware and earlier.
Yeah, I think my drivers got raped or something. I'm using the default drivers for now. The newest Catylst drivers have caused problems with Savage for me. Man I sure wish they had that 6800 GT out when I built this system. I could really go for a company with stable drivers. It's not the card is it?

With ATI its most likely never the card. They just have bad driver days.....I leanred my lesson and jumped out of that ship when I bought this PC. My 6800GT has never let me down.
