I've got 2x WD Raptors in RAID 0 with a 16 KB stripe size, and a 4 KB cluster size. For example, If I wrote a 1 MB file to my array, then that would mean 512 KB to one drive, and 512 KB to the other drive in 16 KB stripes. Now, since my cluster size is 4 KB, do you think that I would get a performance increase if, in the future, formatted my hard drive with 16 KB cluster sizes? I mean with RAID 0 it takes 16 KB of the file, and puts it on one drive, and another 16 KB of the file onto the other drive. And so on and so forth.
However, here's the problem. My drive is currently in use while in Windows, so how would I unlock it so I could format the drive, and re-install Windows, while changing the cluster size to 16 KB? When you install XP, it does the default of 4 KB, but I'd like a 16 KB cluster size, because that's the same size of the RAID stripe.
