View Full Version : Just can't run JF Shadow Warrior

Tried configuring the mod's graphics and sound settings in all sorts of ways using the setup.exe. I set the graphics to 1024*768 with 16 bpp and left the sound settings untouched at first. The screen kept 'blinking' while Lo Wang's taunt sounded as if you were closing and opening and closing and opening your ears in rapid succession. Tried changing the 'sample rate' (I tried almost every available value). Same result. Tried changing the 'sample size' once. Same result. Tried changing the 'number of voices'. Same result. Turned off SoundMAX on my system and used another playback option. Same result. (Oh, yes, I remembered to save the settings each time.)

I'm really at my wits' end now. What am I to do to get this thing to run? It's just so distressing how everyone else seems to be able to run it and I alone have to be cursed with the unenviable fate of not being able to.

My system uses Windows 98 and a Radeon 9600 card. It uses SoundMAX and wave device for voice modem as playback devices. (No, I don't think I have a Creative Labs sound card.) I have been able to run almost every game on my system from Ultima Underworld (when using DOSBox) to UT2k4, so I don't see why it has to take exception with JF Shadow Warrior.

Help, anyone, pweeeease?... (Or are you suggesting I wait until the next updated release of JF Shadow Warrior? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

most soundcards have a "soundblaster" emulation built into the drivers. choosing irq 7 (or 9) and dma 1 etc should work.

as for the game, you have the main sw file added from the original game ? sw.grp i think it is. Also, you may have to make sure its named in all lower case.

Just got the problem solved! (But thanks anyway, hitman. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

All I had to do was turn the 'fullscreen' option off!

So glad I can run JF Shadow Warrior at last. Just gorgeous. Truly Shadow Warrior liked you've never played it before! Can't wait for its final perfected incarnation with 3D actors and the rest of it! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

WTF are you doing with win98 on a system with a radeon 9600?
never heard any problems like this from 2000/xp users and it runs fine on my linux box too.

Uhhhh... I understand there are many games which don't mind Win 98 but hate anything higher. (I play mostly old titles.) http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Too bad none of those came out in the past 6 years. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

If only they did.

Or if only those folks doing Windows could be a little more 'gamer friendly'.

Sooner or later progress has to unshackle itself from backward compatibility.

Not that I need to go with this 'progress', of course. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Excellent work BTW, JonoF. Keep it up!
