We've finally upgraded the Mac side of the printing business to Mac OS X Panther, but there's trouble. The major part of the front-end, the AGFA AccuSet 1500+, does not work with it right now. A description of the set up is well... we have both this Mac and the PC hooked into an older Mac which serves no purpose other than being the medium for the postscript to travel to the imagesetter. It's old enough to be the only computer capable of doing this job. The problem is in attempting to add a new printer on this Mac.
The question is how to get it to accept the PPD. When it attempts to communicate with the imagesetter, you can look to the older Mac on the AGFA Viper console to see that it becomes "busy" for a second, then quickly goes out of that. This computer then prompts to either give up or manually select a PPD. I've gone through the old extensions in the remnants of the OS 9 set-up, there were about four to try, and none of those worked; I tried grabbing the PPD from the AGFA CD and that didn't work. I know they don't work because I'll open an Adobe Illustrator document to try to image from it, but in the set-up window, it doesn't allow you to do much of anything (paper size, etc.) and the PPD bit of the window shows as blank, and the telltale sign is that simply hitting "Print" does nil.
I kind of doubt the imagesetter is just too old or something as the Windows machine still prints to it fine in XP. Maybe I've just skipped over something small and stupid again.
Oh, and by the way, I've Googled several times to find something on this- drivers, FAQs, you name it- and I found nothing. There's not even any solid support for the 1500 on the AGFA website. Meh!
