GARG! I've had it with Windows 95, 98 and 3.x on my old Pentium 1's and 486's. I want to install Windows NT 4.0 on them. So I tested it on one of my Pentium 1's. SO I format my drive. I run my DOS bootdisk and run the setup program in the CD directory. Well it creates 3 disks whitch I labeld and put aside. Then it began to copy some files to hardrive. So I head off. I come back and it says that its done and to put my Disk #1 in the drive. I do. It restarts and begins loadign the drivers and finding the mass storage drives. So there I sit. Then I get a error saying that it can't find the portion where all the files were even though the DOS part DID create those files. Now I'm stuck it stops everytime there now.
If anyone can help me it would be greatly appercaited.

Can you boot from the CD? Or did NT4 pre-date such things?

No I can not boot from the CD. All it know is that it copyed like 100 megs of stuff to my HD under some strange direcotry name.

Prehaps it could be the FAT32 file system?

Oh! Heh, yeah, you should've mentioned that. NT4 can't read FAT32. (Not until SP4, that is.)

But will the installer read it if you have SP4 or greater slipstreamed? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So whats been happening wrong with 95/98 that would drive you to nt4? If your just needing it for tasks and not really a gamer then I can understand....but otherwise your going to learn how bad NT is at letting your programs work.

NT 4.0 cannot read FAT32 regardless of service pack level. FAT and NTFS only.

I dont have SP4.
UH OH!
The ocmputer that I'm currently installing NT 4 on is having some trouble you see. It has bad secotrs and whenever I try to format it it formats but then it trys to recover some sectors then it does nothing and now my HD is stuck with no file system! How do I get FAT (or NTFS) on my HD so NT will install?

I suggest that you try using a windows 2k OR XP´s built in partition system (dont install it just boot) and format it to be NTFS.
OR use a 3rd party program such as partition magic. Last option is to get a better HD http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I remember when installing NT4 Server at a place I worked, that the CD install needed to create install floppydisks so that the OS could be installed. It was the worst ever.

If you've already created the 3 floppy disks, just boot from them, and when you get to the part that shows you your existing partitions, delete them all. Then create a new partition and format it with NTFS. Simple.
