I was wondering if anyone has come upon a free domain name redirection site? Where I could turn my old site's lengthy address into my domain's address. And not something where I'd have to transfer domain registrars, because that's going to cost me $25. Same price as the domain. You know what I'm talking about. Some of these places will claim that it is free, but then say that you have to pay $10. Other ones will put banners on your pages or popups (of course, if the viewer uses Firefox, then there would be no popups. On IE 6, there would be). I would like an absolutely free domain name redirection with no banners, where I could turn this link (http://members.shaw.ca/calgary_transit/index.htm) to use my domain's one here (http://www.calgary-transit.ca). Remember, it has to be completely free with no banners or gimmicks.

Who did you register calgary-transit.ca with?

They should have the option to redirect all viewers to another url for free.

Otherwise I suggest going with godaddy.com -- you can manage your domains there quite easily.

MyID.ca makes you pay $25 for redirection. They also make you pay for transferring domains. This GoDaddy site doesn't seem to have URL forwarding by the sounds of it. At least not in their site index.

I use them and it definitely has url forwarding.. no extra charge, you shouldn't have to pay for that sort of stuff.

It works fine.. basically it'll automatically redirect it to whatever url you want. I've used it a couple of times.

You can also transfer your domain to the godaddy.com servers and pay a certain amount but what it does is it automatically renews your domain for an extra year on top of what you've got now. So you're not wasting any money.

Can they handle ".ca" domains? I know they can't register them, but can you manage one under their site. It's great to hear that they will allow you to use your chequing account to pay for stuff, because that's how I paid for my domain over at the other place. Not everyone has credit card. Much like paying a bill. Goes from one TD bank account to the other.

I'm not too sure honestly.. you could email them to ask.

Also like Lain i could give you a free http://blablabla.leafyisle.net/ domain which would redirect to your site.

GoDaddy's hosting is actually reasonably priced. This place I'm at must have ripped people off with hosting packages. Horrendous (sp?) prices. I should have looked around more. Maybe that $25 was wasted on a domain. Now unless I can transfer my domain to GoDaddy without a credit card, then I should be able to pull this domain forwarding off. I'm talking about using my chequing account. They take cheques there, and they also understand that not everyone has a credit card for things they want to buy on the 'net. The other place did too, but this place has better features.

Yeah godaddy is great.. I wouldn't use anyone else for my domain management.

It looks like if I want to escape the $25 for the domain name transfer, I could stop using my current domain, and register another one with GoDaddy. Similar name, but with the .com extension or whatever. The domain name sales are final at this place where I got mine, so no refunds. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tinyted.gif

Yeah definitely a good idea.

Heh. Funny story. I was at the last step in the registration process when they needed 2 pieces of information. One would be that your bank is a US branch (if paying by cheque), and the second, you need a driver's license number if you're going to have a personal account. I have none of those so I could not complete the registration process. Emptied my cart and off I went. I'm an American/Canadian citizen, but my bank's branch resides in Canada. Maybe someone is trying to tell me something.

Email them and find out if theres a way you can pay via cheque if you live in Canada.

Have you tried using the meta tag for url redirection?

Nope, because when I type in my address, it says that the domain can't be found. Probably means that it doesn't have hosting yet.
