Best 3rd person ever?

I havent played all the 3rd person shoot'em upers out there, but I would like to give Max Payne my vote for best ever!!!!!!!
Lets hear form the rest of you on what you think.

Im gonna keep a running total on this one. I think video card manufacturers should use amx payne as a point to buy a new video card....I just upgraded mine and wow what a diff....the first time I played it I was amazed at the detail up close.......I mentioned DeusEx in another thread and pointed out how nasty the graphics are in it. Fun to play but nasty graphics. Anyway

Personally, in terms of overall "Kickassness", I place Max Payne at a tie with Heretic 2, that game kicked total ass. So did MP, but Heretic 2 was so sweet for it's time.

My vote, a tie between Max and Heretic 2.

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation was actually the first 3rd person 3D shooter I ever played, and that title was excellent. Visually, Max Payne and Alice are hands down the most beautiful and atmospheric for me, but TR:TLR happens to offer the most fun and varied gameplay. Too bad Lara doesn't have the luxury of Bullet Time.

The best 3rd person shooters (for one reason or another) so far:

Max Payne
Tomb Raider series
American McGee's Alice

Fakk 2 was a great game.. but it was almost like tomb raider, which got old too fast.. So, of course Max Payne gets my vote!

I wanted to give my reasons why it also gets my vote. I dont have the greates video card ( nvidea geforce2 mx-200 32mb) or fastest machine (k6-2 500mhz, 256mb ram) so I am not ablr to play it at full swing. A real sore spot is when the game takes hours to figure out the correct settings to function. First run was great and actually allowed me to boost the graohical setting up a bit. This helps that the lowest settings look great also. Some games dont do that for you as well. maybe they are so ashamed of the graphics that they dont want to set them low to keep the visuals looking good so it wont scare off the graphic hungry......anyhow theres my story ans im stickin to it....

Rune was pretty good at the start, got a bit old in the middle and had a kickass last 10-15% of the game. Stunning graphics too.

Didn't really like FAKK2. Also, it was (thankfully) shorter than Payne.

Oni was pretty good but the key setup was poor (editing the .ini to change the default keys is something that no gamer should ever have to do!) and the graphics somewhat bland. Good fun overall though.

Heretic was great for it's time, but I haven't had it installed for ages so I can't really comment too much. I remember enjoying it though.

The first Tomb Raider game was like a revelation to me, but that was partly because I bought a Voodoo 1 about 2 weeks after getting the game. It (with the much improved graphics) blew me away. But for the most part I enjoyed all of the TR games to a greater or lesser extent.

Max Payne I've talked about in another post. Love it. Smacks of quality. A little short but I can live with that when a game gives you 100% intense action. I also appreciate the fact that there aren't any st00pid 'bosses' to beat. Makes a nice change.

Alice was stunningly beautiful, but I had to put it down for a couple of months before getting round to finishing it. Got somewhat monotonous and, sadly, did have some crappy boss levels in it.

Last couple of years: Max Payne

All time: Tomb Raider 1

No, muffin man wasn't in the film, but Rachel Weisz was. Anyway, about 6 years back when lived in London she was in a theatre production near Soho and I ran a cafe/restaurant there (actually, I ran 16 of them, but that was my head office). She and I became friends and, for reasons I'm unsure of, gave me the nick MuffinMan. Pretty soon all of the theatre people I knew started calling me that, then other customers as well.

I've had Hitman on my shelf for about three months now, and I still haven't really played it. It looks to demand a lot from me as far as strategizing and planning (which is excellent). I'm thinking it would be the perfect game to play over the cold winter months.

I really really love Max Payne, it blew me away the first time I played it and i was so happy I had it, but it is not my favorite 3rd person shooter ever. My favorite one is Winback for the N64. I waited along time for that game( I actually dreamed about it lol) and when I finally got to play it I was so happy. So my vote goes to Winback for best 3rd person ever, but Max is my favorite right now along with DMC.

Nah, played Lander and Mahjong on our 286 12Mhz portable PC in 1986. Before that I played Amstrad games in 1984 (first conscious time I guess). I think I might even have been born on a computer... err.. maybe not...

But Max Payne is the best 3rd person game... ever... maybe not the best game ever though, Fallout and Jagged Alliance is high up there for me, and Duke3D. Anyway, it's just a matter of opinion, so let's not get the christmas rib (or whatever you'll have) stuck in our throat for that reason images/icons/wink.gif

I think Max and the original Tomb Raider are the best 3rd person games made for the PC. The original Tomb Raider was just so awesome as an adventure game. Then they screwed it up.

Going strictly on 3rd person, say camera and movement control, HereticII has never yet been equaled. MP is nice and id say runner up(Jetforce Gemini has supurb control as well but thats a different platform). Besides still looking beautiful, Heretic has the absolute best flow to it ive ever felt, you become Corvus even more than if you could not see him(1st person). Besides all that, it still has an online community like no other out there. These 3 years later you can still get on and play every night with many of the people who were there in the start. Not to mention the mods(some of which COULD use more play) like THF, Seige, Insta-gib, the Quest, Skullhunters, theres also the alternate melee play in Blade servers, which i beleive had helped to shape the game into what it is in my mind.
and hey folks, even though it was overlooked by most when it was released, come give it a try, you can find it for $5 most places.

I've played a couple of 3ps's and i know max payne is the best, but a LOT of other 3PS's are good too.Tomb raider, MGS(Metal Gear Solid) series, syphon filter(thought thats a PS game series) series and i liked ALL of covert ops, Rouge spear and all the rouge spear add-ons, though i don't like the original rainbow six games. but jack up max payne by one cuz' thats my vote! images/icons/grin.gif
