I hope they did some really good focus group testing on the controller, because it just doesn't look comfortable (or right) but one would have to try it first. And besides, shouldn't they have switched the location of the d-pad and the analog stick by now?

The S controller was really nice, I actually liked it more than the PS2 controller, I thought it was more ergonomic and could go farther stretches without my wrists getting tired. HOPEFULLY we can still use ps2 controllers with the PS3 though.

I like the design of the PS3. I think it looks nicer than the Xbox 360, but that's just personal taste. The controller, however, is actually better than the PS1&2 versions of dualshock. How do i know this? Because my flatmate has a very similar controller for the PC. It's extremely comfortable, more so than the dualshock and xbox controllers, but not IMO than the gamecube controller.

The difference being that when you play PC games you are generally sitting upright. The controller is in your hands in front of you. When I play console games, I am stretched out in a lazy boy with my feet up and the controller is in my hands in my lap. I don't think that those spikes on either end of the PS3 controller are going to work well for me. What's good for a PC isn't necessarily good for a console.

I showed the pictures of the console and the controller to my housemate, who is a product design student. He wasn't impressed with either of them.

I have to say that I much prefer the XBOX Controller-S over the PS2 controller and this new design doesn't look like it will win the XBOX controller over either.

It's hard not to get caught up in the excitement of new console releases. Unlike the PC, which evolves gradually over time and really acts as the proving grounds for a lot of the tech put into consoles, consoles make these huge leaps every 4-5 years, which makes that final year prior to new releases an exciting one. I'm really looking forward to both of these, and I'm just glad they are spaced apart by 6 months or so.

Look at the way your character moves (or the way the gun moves as evidence of your character's movement). It's so much more realistic than anything I've seen in a FPS before. In addition to the Sony demos being shown by Phil Harrison, the Epic and EA presentations were the only third party portions actually running on the PS3 in real-time. But most of those movies, which I probably watched 3 or 4 during rehearsals for the event, look very achievable and some were probably rendered on the actual box but in non-real-time. When a system is year away, heck even with a system is 6 months away, it is reasonable to expect the power of the dev kits would still only be a fraction of the power of the final system.

I know we'll certainly be able to achieve much more on the final box than we were able to show in our demo after working with the early dev kit for only ~2 months. As Tim mentioned our demo only really showed off the power of RSX and then still we're talk about an RSX that's nowhere near as fast as the final one will be. When we get home from E3 we'll also start diving seriously into the power of the cell processor. This is a very powerful system!

Sony's cell demos were extremely cool and inspiring but are totally achievable, and over time even surpassable, by third developers like us because, as Tim Sweeney said, the development environment is made up of parts we're already intimaately familiar with: OpenGL, NVIDIA graphics, Linux, and PowerPC. Think about Epic's experience, for example. We rock on NVIDIA hardware. We have been doing OpenGL since Unreal1. We regularly ship our games on Linux and we've won several Macintosh Game of the Year awards including a special World-Wide Design Award directly from Apple for UT2004. We're going to be able to kick serious ass on PS3, and so are a lot of our licensees and other 3rd party developers, in a way that wasn't remotely possible on past consoles.

I should add that we're in a similar position for XBOX360. It's also made up of parts we're intimately familiar with.

My point is that developers are going to be able to get SO MUCH MORE power out of these consoles than they ever could in the past and so much closer to the raw power of the components.

The next generation is just going to be AMAZING!!! Next gen games will be a huge leap forward over current gen.

Can you tell I'm excited?

From what they've shown of the real-time demos. Unreal 3, Fight Night, Heavenly sword etc I think the PS3 should be more than capable of achieving that level of quality.

I think E3 2006 will be a whole lot more impressive when they show get to show some actual games up and running on the hardware.

Where did you ever hear in game? It's a artistic impression of gameplay that they haven't even confirmed is in engine, let alone running realtime in a full game environment.

I heared that many of the E3 videos for the PS3 are just CGI cinematics and not actual real time in-game stuff. Killzone 2 was completly bogus. Sad thing really.

From the interview that was posted either here or in another thread, all the games and demos were real-time, but some of the game footage was cleaned up a little to make it look nicer and all of the game footage was pre-recorded. Which makes sense. It's a shame they had to make some effects look nicer in the footage, but what do you expect? I think the xbox 360 team has probably done some post game cleaning up too.
