Quick question,
HH is showing a demo of prey at the E3, now my question is:
Will this demo be available for download any time soon (if at all)?? If yes, when?? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
This because I guess we are all dying to see some prey in action. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I hope Joe is willing to answer this.
Oh, and if this has been asked before (I looked but couldn't find it), please say so and lock this thread up. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hopefully the HumanHead guys show us the difference from Doom3.

There aren't any plans for a video release during E3. The efforts were on doing the demo for the ATI booth, and that we'd decide what to do about videos after E3.
Maybe some shaky-cam footage will be released?

It's really a bad choice in my opinion. The majority of gamers isn't able to visit the E3 but also wants to see games (Prey) in motion.

It isn't on purpose. We don't *have* a video. Human Head created a 12 minute running demo that will run in the ATI booth. All efforts were put into getting that solid. At some point soon after E3 we can look at dumping those demos to video form and releasing them.

This game proves that magazine scans can damage a first impression. I wasn't that enthused by the scanned PC Gamer pics, but the same pics look pretty incredible now that they've been officially released. I particularly like this one:

The environments impressed me the most. Yes, the portals rock, and yes, the gravity/wall-walking/puzzles were awesome looking, but what really stood out (even on a shaky-cam, so consider this a job well done) is the autheticity of the environments. The attention to detail is staggering.
The beginning scene by the way was absolutely horrifying. When I think about it more and more, I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the opening sequence! I mean, the amount of crap going on in just that one sequence is astounding (it would probably require several sessions to see it all) and it seems that Human Head's skill with scripted events is absolutely stunning.

It rocks! The intro looked and felt cinematic, like a cool sci-fi movie. The portals seem so flawless, almost like it is nothing special. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif The portals work like just another function of the environment. They seem to blend in very well . Its as if HH were aiming for it to be like that so that you almost take them for granted. Notice how the sound changed when you were in a different side of the portal?
The wall walking looks cool, and the spirit walking (I think) looks like it will open up interesting ways of adding to gameplay in FPS's today.
It looks like it will have a ton of gameplay from what I can see so far. The environments look very detailed and seeing them in motion makes it seem much more original and separates it from the whole `it looks like doom 3' idea. Man, I gotta watch the rest of it. And then watch it again! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It was feckin huge man! I liked the environments on offer, and I have to say the screenshots just can't do the game justice. It looks like it will be a very trippy game. I might like to add that it has a very alien/organic/sci-fi art direction. Now I have seen it in motion it looks very unique and separates it from quake IV (which I am eagerly awaiting also). It also looks fast, not as fast as the old prey but your character has some speed. I like it http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

While we don't know the specs, I don't think you have much to worry about. Prey is running that well on current machines, and it's not due out until next year (as far as we know)... so by the time it's out, hardware to run it should be much more affordable.
But IIRC they said to expect system requirements just a bit higher than Doom III... so not too bad

A visually impressive intro(the bar) and generally impressive detailed environments inside the space ship.
Prey looks very promising overall.
Having said this, I would like to point out one thing, I think could improve the gameplay experience even more(based on the released shaky cam video):
1. I really think the game would benefit from using more and advanced particle effects.
The explosions just seemed a little too tame and 90's like, to me. With todays focus on physics and destroyable environments, it's a little disappointing that an explosion is just a simple "light" animation. I would really like to see different stuff whirling up and being scattered around from any given explosion.
Same goes for general weapon damage effects, lots of cool particle effects will really add to the coolness and immersive ness of using them.
The trip outside in the little space ship was a cool gameplay addition. But the fight with the little space alien seemed a little too 90's "Descent" like(visually speaking).
Again, I think the scene needed more cool/advanced particle effects. I mean, the gun effects and the little explosion from the alien, reminded me so much of Descent from the 90's. The environments looked pretty cool however, it's just SOME of the visual details I'm picking on! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I also hope the game will feature higher resolution textures than Doom3. The textures are all muddy and blurred in the shaky cam video, so I can't really make a good judgement there.
I also have a question. In the video, there is not shown any loading screens when entering new areas or using portals.
How does the game handle loading of maps?
Finally, I would just like to say, again, that I think the game is looking promising and I look forward to the day I can play it on my own computer.
Cheers! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The game itself is really cool. I like the portals, and how he walked right into another environment through one. From what I could tell, Prey seems to use the enviroments more than a regular corridor shooter. What I mean is, there's more to do than just walking through them once. You get more bang for your buck?
You use the floor and the ceiling of the same room. That alone makes it more than just an ordinary corridor shooter for me. There's a lot of possibilties for varied gameplay.

Are portals going to be used as shortcuts/alternate routes, or are these random portal openings actually the only way to progess? In other words, a portal opens up in the middle of a hallway: can I continue down the hallway, or will the hallway mysteriously be cut off, forcing me to use the conveniently open portal?
I do understand the development time consideration, but I think it's a cool idea to have to choose whether or not to use the portals. Some portals could simply lead to self-contained areas, others could poop you out into a particularly advantageous place in the level. I suppose some could lead to overwhelming odds. Exploration and replayability +++++.
I also have a question about spirit-walking. Obviously, there have to be boundaries to how far and through what structural elements you can spirit through. How is this handled, and how is it explained logically?
The video looks pretty cool. The portal and gravity game elements will be interesting, as we're already seeing creative exploitation of these elements. The invasion of the bar sounded cooler on paper than it did in the video, but granted, the picture quality was pretty terrible.

Hey, someone finally made a game with the Doom 3 engine! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Seriously, it's a good video. That's why I like games like these : the developpers have understood a simple, basic rule of game design, which is giving the player something to do. Your engine does gravity and portals? Well, you don't just show these to the player through a cutscene, you actually use them to give him something to do.
What I enjoyed the most is the wall walking (reminded me of Metroid in morph ball form) and the level flipping at the press of a switch. I remember 2d platformers such as Castlevania having rotating levels so it's nice to see the same concept finally applied to 3D.
Questions for George, if you feels like answering some of them:
1a) Were wall walking and level flipping original ideas to the Prey of 1998 or are they new?
1b) Who came up with that idea?
2) Why was the name 'Talon Brave' changed?
3a) Seems like the insect grenade is the same concept as in the Duke 2001 video, where you rip the bug's leg off to 'pull the pin'. Why are you "recycling" Duke ideas into Prey?
3b) You said that even today, no game has stolen Prey's thunder. But could Prey steal Duke's?
4) I shouldn't even bother asking about system specs, right?
5) Do you think gravity will play an even bigger role in games as years go by or have HL2 and Prey done and polished pretty much everything there's to do gameplay wise with stuff that can bounce around?
6) How do you guys feel about this once dormant project now brought back to life in full glory?
Thanks.
Gryph
05-21-2005, 02:15 PM
Simon, they've said that PC specs should be a little more than what was required for Doom 3. George gave some solids specs and said it would run fairly well on it.
I think you'll be in the ballpark and fine with something like a 2.8Ghz, 1 gig ram, and a ATI 9700Pro or 9800 card. More is better, but that's basically what the game is being developed on, and it runs acceptably on that range of system.
Of course, specs are not final until it ships

That's not the point of my question. I meant to ask him why the idea was moved from Duke to Prey. As you pointed out, it is a good idea. So why remove it from Duke?

You are asumeing what you saw in the 2001 dnf trailer was a grenade. What makes you belive it is. My guess was, is and will always be that it was an enemy, probably the thing that plants the tentacle "disese" that you see people suffering from in the trailer. It just takes up way to much space of the screen to be a weapon if you ask me. remember how you have to remove the protozoid slimers in duke by using a weapon of might foot?
I love the scenes where Tommy is flipping the hallway by shooting those buttons. I've seen something similar to this in games like Serious Sam and Klingon Honor Guard, but it was never as smooth and convincing as this. I didn't think about it at the time, but flipping a room is going to kick ass with a physics engine. You know they're going to put a lot of crates and other moveable objects in these regions. I'd like to see something like this: you need to get through this glass panel that is up near the ceiling to proceed, but it's too strong for your weapons. Even if you could break it, it's too high up. Then, you notice the gravity flipping device. You drive a heavy vehicle under the glass, shoot the button, everything flips, and the vehicle crashes through the glass and you can go on. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Or, maybe there'd be a crane that you could move a heavy crate under the glass. Either way, you get a cool physics/gravity puzzle.

Yeah, we already saw a little of how flipping the world can affect objects in the video, the second time he flips the level we see that large transparent crate was being flipped as well.
Here's a question though, one thing Prey was big on (in the past) was destructable environments. We saw a couple examples of this in the 1998 video... and we saw in this demo a bit of it when that large creature was wacking away at beams... but I'm wondering if destructable environments have made their way into the current incarnation of Prey. If so, are they on the same level as in the early work, or on a more limited basis? (like seen in the demo)

Simon,
1a) Were wall walking and level flipping original ideas to the Prey of 1998 or are they new?
1b) Who came up with that idea?
Human Head came up with those dynamics.
2) Why was the name 'Talon Brave' changed?
We wanted something more approachable.
3a) Seems like the insect grenade is the same concept as in the Duke 2001 video, where you rip the bug's leg off to 'pull the pin'. Why are you "recycling" Duke ideas into Prey?
We're not recycling ideas. Some ideas are independently created. Theirs is a weapon, ours was an enemy.
3b) You said that even today, no game has stolen Prey's thunder. But could Prey steal Duke's?
We just want both to be great games. As long as they don't ship the same month I don't see many issues with them hurting one another.
4) I shouldn't even bother asking about system specs, right?
They are not as high as you may think, and if you can play Doom 3, you can play Prey.
5) Do you think gravity will play an even bigger role in games as years go by or have HL2 and Prey done and polished pretty much everything there's to do gameplay wise with stuff that can bounce around?
There are always new things you can do. Physics will be with us forever now, and play a larger role in games. It comes down to discovering ways to show it off. I do think Prey's gravity flipping comes at a good time when physics usage is still fairly early, so it's seen as fresh.
6) How do you guys feel about this once dormant project now brought back to life in full glory?
Obviously, we feel great that it's back and is a quality project. We knew Human Head was a talented developer and we knew Doom3 was a great engine. It was just a matter of giving the whole thing enough time to come together.

Oh George, I dunno if this has been answered, but what physics engine does Prey use? Megon as well? Or the stock one that was used on Doom III?
Heh. There's a thread over in the DNF forum seeking a temporary replacement for KaiserSoze. With George answering all your questions there, maybe you should apply. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

another question, what happens 3:22 minutes into the video?
after the wallwalk, he enters some sort of room, on a round object on the floor, weird particles come out of the floor, and then he returns is steps, out of the room, and then he spiritwalks.
EDIT: I think it's the same room where the first time he spiritwalked, killed an enemy, pulled a switch so the piece of wallwalk tommy is hanging on moves further to the other part of the wallwalk.

He was gaining health by stepping onto that thing (look at the health meter).

If Human Head's concept art is any indication, Prey will have plenty of disturbing elements - the scene with the posssesed girl is just one of many I bet.

In fact the scene with the posessed girl was one the worst part of the video... The way the characters are animated is TOO cartoonish... The second dissapointment is the way the dog (or whatever this creature looks like) turns into meat pieces after the second shot from the gun... reminds me Q2 monsters reaction on the second, third or whatever shot from the lazer-gun... These two moments hurt my eyes pretty much. The rest of the game is cool methinks.

Agreed on both counts, although I thought the "possessed girl" moment felt great in spite of the out-of-place animation. I didn't think it hurt the scene at all.
As for the dog-alien thingy, it felt like Quake 2 to me as well. They gibbed way too much way too soon when shot. I HATE enemies that just gib instantly on the ground unless I've shot them with explosives. But if shoot them with a gun, I like the appropriate animation of the body being propelled back from the blast. Anything else isn't fun. Surely a game that boasts good use of physics can offer us bodies being thrown from weapon impact?
But hey, even if those gibs are there to say and aren't placeholders for the vid, I'd still play the game. I'll just be a bit dissapointed when I fire the guns.

George said in a Shacknews post that all the pain animations will be done during part of the polishing stage. But all the other enemies didn't gib like those dog things.

Yea, the dog thing getting gibbed looked pretty bad. They had all the alien monsters in Chronicles of Riddick get gibbed too if you kill them... I thought it looked absolutely awfull. And the gibs don't even look that good. Just tiny gibs that make the dog look like it's made out of an egg shell. Defintely needs to be fixed up.

It made the aliens look, and feel hollow to me. As if they really were just made out of polygons, instead of flesh. Defeats the whole purpose.

The latest I believe, I don't know, was a few months back. Suggestions(I think could improve gameplay, after watching the shaky video):
1. Make enemies bleed and leave a mess of gore, when hit by a grenade or powerful weapon.
Doom3's monsters where too dull, because they didn't bleed and cleaned up after themselves after being killed. Which made it feel like shooting dolls made of clay = very tame http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
2. More particle/decals effects from explosions and firing weapons, would make Prey's world even more immersive and believable.
I love seeing "stuff" whirling up and being scattered everywhere from a grenade or other explosive materials.
It makes explosions more unique/interesting and makes them feel less "repetitive".
What do you think of my suggestions 3DR/HH? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
