View Full Version : Walking into the opposite side of Portals

OK, imagine a portal opens up in front of you. You can see the destination. I read that if you were to go around it (the opposite side of the portal), you wouldn't see the rip or the area showing where it would lead too.

My question is: what would happen is you were to walk through the back of the portal?

Going by the way they were designing it back in 1998, you would just pass through the back and stay in the area you were in.

I want those things for multplayer. I think they need to make traps. First, set a spot for the victim to step in and the second trap is set where you want him to end up....in other words:

1) Set on a staircase where he can't see it waiting to be stepped on

2) Other one is attached to a ceiling of a room with a very biiiiig fall.

You could make a bottomless pit with portals. Just have the portal at the bottom of the shaft teleport you back up to the one at the top of the shaft.

Unreal's WarpZones let you do this. You can also change a WarpZone's destination in-game, so after you went through the falling loop a number of times, the bottom portal could switch to a new destination. I did a bottomless pit map in UnrealEd that worked. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's some pretty damn fine programming.

wonder what it looks like when some one comes through the portal when you view it from behind. Does he just pop up or is there some cool effect? If the models can stick through a portal (asumeing they can of course) would not there be some trouble with models sticking halfway through?

but, if there are one sided portals, and they rotate and just happen to be horizontal when i jump through the backside of it, and reach my max jumpheight halfway through and start falling back again, wil i be teleported or wil i fall to the floor? or wil i get cut up into 2 nice bits? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

To the first question i geuss they wouldnt effect the visualisation from behind except for some effect like waves and/or distortion.
To the second question if the game actors go in the portal, they are forced out the other end, most likely.

Man that'd be groovy, half the body sliced up and sent to another part of the spaceship. What happens to the death mode thing then? 2 eagles in split-screen? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

This reminds me of a Lego television episode where this Lego person on a spaceship discovers a portal and when he walks around it he doesn't see it anymore.

Continuing on from my last post in this thread...

I just watched the show I just mentioned, which is incidentally called The Magic Portal. Actually, when the lego guy first discovers the portal he see's through it to the other side of the room. But when he walks through the portal and turns around to face it again, he sees the destination where the portal will take him.

Imagine having a portal spanning an entire room, and the player enters the room behind the portal. The moment you pass the room giant ass amount of monsters come out of some place (or a giant bolder ala Indiana Jones or something), you scream go backward... Where the ***** am I now!?

Heh, heh.

What if you walk backwards through the front of a portal? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dopefish.gif

But back to the '98 IMHZ video, in the one-sided portal demo, when the player walked through the portal, it did not exist in that destination room. So when they turned around, there was no way back.
What would it look like if the player stopped half-way through the portal? Would they be half-visible in the destination room?
(To an observer in that room, would they see a half cut-off person floating in the air?)

Good question, I allways wondered about that, but then again, that's what it would look like if it where for real in my opinion.

I can already imagine what happens if you walk/run through any of these portals...
---
"Damn, only 15% health left..."

//Portal opens, and an enemy comes out of it...

"Hah, i'll just run through the portal, and then i'll be safe there, untill i get more health..."

//Jump into the portal... And realize, that you just walked into the whole army-base...

"Uh oh..."

//Get's slaughtered from all directions... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I wondered that too.....guess we won't know until we try it?

But if you're looking behind the portal when someone sticks a body part through, what does the end of the body part look like?

I mean supposing someone sticks an arm through. From the rear (where the portal shouldn't exist) you would see a floating arm, right? But what would the cross section of the arm look like?

This is what I meant by my question, sort of.

I wonder if the portals itself has gravity, i.e. that you can get sucked in to the portal. Would be cool. Create a portal and see all your enemies get sucked in. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif (off course, you hold on to something your self. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, just when some big-ass enemy shows up, a portal opens right besides of him...
The other side of that portal could include a black hole because of some 'technical issues'
And therefor suck him away... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

hmm, a battlelord maybe??

oh damn, wrong forum. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Seriously, I would really love if something like that is possible. But I am wondering about implementing stuff like that because it could get annoying and the interface (for the dynamice kind) could suck because sometimes you want the gavitational portal (as a weapon) and sometimes not. But I am sure the amazing developers of HH can figure this out (with the help of 3DR if required http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, Prey promised new gameplay elements and stuff...
I'm sure they won't have any problems regarding to the Portals...

In fact, the portals are surely only ONE of many new gameplay elements... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Like walking on walls, relative up and down movement, strange weapons, etc

I can't wait to see this with my own eyes.

No Carmack brainiac could ever create such great and innovative gameplay. Maybe hold it back if he could http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

There's a mod for Serious Sam :Second Encounter called Warped, that allows you to walk on walls.
Plus there was a few parts of the game that you walked on walls.

Portals can be entirely dynamic. I expect that after the game is released, we'll see modders go crazy with ideas that didn't even occur to us. However, we're doing a lot of fun things with portals that we didn't show at E3. One of the goals in Prey is to keep players guessing, and never let players get comfortable with the environment. Portals play a big part of this. There's also more gameplay related to portals than we've shown so far. And, portals tie into the game's fiction, which will be revealed during play.

so it could be that for example after entering a portal, you are in a no-gravity room?
and after entering a new portal, everything is back normal.

maybe there is also a possibility to have a portal that is connected with himself? so when you enter, you keep in the same place, without being teleported. maybe only thing is changed is the gravity, and when you enter again, gravity is normal again?

it would be cool to have a 360 degrees rotating room (room keeps rotating, non-stop, in all directions) with some places that you can't hit or you die. this would be a 3D version of sonic the hedgehog's bonus levels (where you have to try to get to the middle without stepping on those red flashing tiles)

This right here is what will set Prey apart from a lot of FPS games. That is, if HH pull it off adequately. From the footage shown; I'm pretty confident that you guys will.
